三 small steps

You were 9 at the time. Training with your Sensei in the dojo. You were learning and mastering a new technique with your devil fruit powers.

The sliding door opened, and Shouga appeared. You turned and your eyes lit up immediately as they fell on him.

"Daddy!"

You ran up to him and hugged him. He smiled down at you as he stroked your blonde hair.

"My precious girl. It's your big brother's turn to train now."

Your brother stood behind your dad. He was 13 at the time. Fists clenched. Pissed look on his face as usual.

"Kazi-"

You were cut off as he bodied you causing you to fall to the ground.

"Kazuki!"

Your father snapped immediately, yanking him by his shoulder. The young boy screeched in pain.

Kazuki then suddenly shouted at Shouga,

"You only notice me when I act out! I could disappear and you wouldn't even notice!"

You just stared at Kazuki in shock, your eyes already welling with tears.

His angry eyes then fell on you as he shouted,

"You're not allowed to cry! You have nothing to cry about! You're not even my real sister! You don't know anything! About me, or this family! You just live in your little bubble like the world is perfect! The man you call dad-"

He was cut off as Shouga slapped him.

So hard it knocked the boy to his hands and knees.

You cried in fear and ran up clinging to your dad.

"Kazuki. Say another word and I will make you disappear."

The boy just growled as he stood up and stormed into the dojo.

Your dad shut the sliding door and let out a heavy sigh.

He bent down to be eye level with you, as he wiped away your tears with his thumb.

He spoke softly,

"Shiina. I need you to know, everything I do is to protect you. You are the most important thing to me."

He hugged you tightly.

"My angel. My precious girl. I will always protect you."

Your eyes flickered open. You were curled up in the infirmary bed on your side. Knees tucked in against your chest.

Wait.

Hadn't you fallen asleep in the tub? You couldn't remember. You felt so groggy.

You looked down at your body. Fresh T-shirt, underwear, and bandages. Your body still felt weak, but you didn't feel any immediate aches or pains.

You stretched your stiff body and sat up slowly.

"You're awake."

You turned to look at Clione who was approaching your bed with a plate of food.

"Captain says you need to try to eat."

Food. You weren't hungry at all. But the plate sure smelled good. He sat the plate on your lap as well as a fresh glass of water on the side of your bed.

"Captain also says I have a smart mouth and am a waste of medical supplies."

He just stared at you with wide eyes, not saying a word.

You sighed,

"Thanks for the food."

Were you supposed to thank your captor? Who knows.

He cleared his throat.

"Captain will be in later to talk to you. He says to try to think hard about what happened. Y'know. Before we found you."

You nodded your head slowly. Your stomach dropped just thinking about it.

Although you really didn't feel like eating you managed to choke down half the plate of food, setting the dish on the bedside table when you were finished.

You closed your eyes and layed back down on your back and let out a heavy exhale.

You were drowning. But what happened before that?

Try to remember.

But all you could think of was your crew.

Drowning.

Getting captured.

Taken.

Your eyes shot open.

God dammit. That's not what I'm supposed to be remembering.

You quickly tried to shake the thoughts.

At that moment, all you wanted was to get out of the infirmary. Get off this god forsaken ship. Or submarine. Or whatever the hell it was.

You shifted to the edge of the bed and hopped down, this time landing on your feet, and standing. Your body still ached, and you felt a little unsteady, but at least you could stand without falling.

Clione looked at you a skeptical expression on his face when he noticed you getting up,

"What are you doing?"

Fucking christ.

"I have to go to the bathroom."

He nodded his head, approached you and grabbed your arm, as if to support you.

"I don't think I need support, I want to try to walk on my own."

He turned to you,

"I'm not doing this to help you walk, I'm doing this so you don't try to run away. Captain's orders."

Oh. Right.

I'm a prisoner!

Silly me!

You fought back the urge to make a smart ass comment as the two of you walked out of the infirmary into the hallway you had seen a bit of yesterday.

There weren't a lot of other men in the hallway, but the ones you did pass all gave you looks.

Once you were outside the bathroom Clione stopped and let go of you.

"Please don't try anything. Captain says you're too weak and if you do, you'll reopen your wound."

You scoffed.

"Right."

Or he just doesn't want to deal with my annoying ass.

You opened the door and walked into the bathroom, as Clione stood outside guarding the door.

After you had peed, you approached a small mirror mounted in front of one of the sinks.

Holy Shit.

You didn't even recognize yourself. You had slept so much, but the bags under your eyes were still so prominent. And you looked sick. I mean, you were already pale, but you looked like a damn ghost.

The good news was you looked clean. Your long blonde hair fell at your sides. It looked... freshly washed? You brought a handful of your blonde hair to your nose.

Had Bepo washed your hair when you fell asleep?

Yup. Your hair smelled like mens shampoo. It wasn't bad, actually.

What a precious bear.

Although it was apparent you weren't feeling your best, you were still beautiful.

Even in the oversized mens t-shirt you wore.

A sudden knock at the door startled you,

"Hurry up in there, or I'm coming in. We agreed, no funny-business."

You sighed and made your way over to the door opening it,

"Yeah yeah I'm done,"

"Good."

He gripped your arm again as the two of you started making your way back to the infirmary.

You stopped abruptly in the hallway. Clione looked at you,

"What is it now girl?"

"Show me another room on this ship. I can't go back to that infirmary right now."

He looked at you with that skeptical expression as you continued,

"Please. I didn't try anything in the bathroom did I?"

He sighed.

"Fine. But you don't tell anyone I did this. You're not supposed to be anywhere else."

A smile crept on your lips.

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. We might get caught."

You couldn't help but let out a slight laugh.

The two of you walked down the hallway, his tight grip on your arm never loosening. He pointed to doors, telling you what each one was.

Another bathroom. A storage closet. One of the men's quarters.

He then stopped in front of a door and looked down the hallway both ways, to make sure no one was around.

"Alright. This is where I sleep. There won't be anyone in here right now because we're all working right now."

He slowly opened the door and pulled you inside with him.

It was a nice sized room with 4 sets of bunks. And to your surprise, despite a few unmade beds, it was well kept. And didn't smell bad.

He let go of your arm.

"Don't try anything. And don't touch anything."

"Okay, okay."

You walked around the room, just looking around. It was big and clean compared to the quarters on your ship.

Your ship.

Your crew.

Dammit.

Why did everything have to be a reminder?

You felt a lump form in the back of your throat, but Clione's voice quickly pulled you from your thoughts.

"Are you happy? Ready to go? I really don't want to get in trouble."

You turned to look at him and quickly nodded your head.

Soon, the two of you were making your way back to the infirmary again.

The trip to the room was quick, but you were just thankful to have been in another room besides the infirmary.

You walked in, and both you and Clione nearly jumped as you were startled to find Law in there. Sitting on the edge of your bed, arms crossed with that unamused expression he always had.

"And where the hell were you two?"

Well shit.

"Captain! I- we-"

"I tried to escape," you blurted out immediately,

"I locked him outside the bathroom and was searching for a way out."

Law's face contorted into an irritated expression.

"You're dumber than I thought."

He paused.

"Clione. Out while I deal with this."

Clione quickly walked out of the infirmary without looking back.

Law let out a heavy sigh after the door shut with a click.

Glaring at you for a moment before he spoke,

"So now you're lying on behalf of my crew?"

"No I really was trying to escape he-"

"Shiina-ya." he cut you off.

You just stared at him, not sure whether to protest or shut up.

He stood up off the bed and walked over so he was standing in front of you.

Towering over you.

"I know you're not that stupid."

You tried to hold your angry expression as you looked up at him, although internally you were melting into a puddle of fear.

"You don't know that."

He let out a slight laugh.

"Just get in the damn bed."

You didn't argue and climbed into the infirmary bed.

He turned to face you, his usual stern expression on his face once again.

"First, how are you feeling?"

You shrugged.

"Actually, a lot better than yesterday."

He nodded.

"Your wound looked better when I re-wrapped it last night."

Ah. That's where the clean bandages came from this morning.

He continued,

"Bepo also informed me you... had some struggles last night."

Struggles?

More like panic attack or meltdown.

You blinked not expecting those words to come out of his mouth.

"Uh, I guess."

"I left you alone today so you could have the day to regroup yourself."

Have the day?

"Is it night time?"

"Yes."

There was silence between the two of you a moment before he continued,

"Listen. I am going to ask you a couple questions, if you start to struggle, I will stop. I don't want to push you too much. But I need you to really try to think."

His words made your stomach churn, but you nodded your head.

"When we found you, you were with a white haired boy. He is your right hand man, no?"

Sora.

Where was he?

"Yes." you started quietly.

"Sora Kiyama. He is my second in command."

Law nodded his head and continued,

"The white haired boy was firing gun shots in the air. Causing a commotion. We had surfaced and were going to be stopping at a nearby island. That's how we found you."

He continued,

"He had pulled you out of the water, said you were unconscious and had been drowning. He also said he would do anything if we saved your life. Give us any information, or just sacrifice himself if you got to live."

You felt that lump in your throat form as he spoke.

Sora.

You pictured his smile, his laugh. The way he always scolded you for being reckless. And hugged you tight after every fight. He was truly selfless.

You felt an ache in your chest.

"I will tell you right now, that the white haired boy is alive and okay. But nothing more."

Your eyes widened.

Sora. was. alive.

You let out a shaky exhale as you felt the anxiety ease slightly.

Sora was okay.

"Unfortunately, we never did get much information from him. We figured keeping you would be enough, and when you finally awoke we would get the whole story."

He paused.

"So I need you to try to remember what happened before you drowned. Who attacked your crew?"

It was apparent he wanted information. Whoever obliterated your crew was somewhere in the vicinity and clearly posed a threat. He was a smart man no doubt. He wanted to be prepared just in case. Knew it was important to know your enemy before facing them. Especially if it was some big name pirates. In the New World you never knew who you might come across.

You thought.

Hard.

But every time it played in your memory there was a blank spot.

It went black.

And then you were drowning in the sea again.

You looked at him.

"I really can't remember."

He sighed,

"I figured. It's a psychological response in our brains when we experience something unpleasant. Repressed memories."

You looked down. Not saying anything.

"Just, take it easy, and try to think. Try to remember what happened. "

He paused a moment before adding,

"And, just so you know if we encounter an enemy ship, I want information from you-

I know you know about all that stuff."

You nodded, still looking down at your hands.

Information. All you were good for.

You would have been gone by now, thrown into the sea, if you weren't useful.

You knew that. Growing up with Shouga as your dad you knew more information than you should. You had information on nearly every single known pirate, and marine.

It was either you were captured by marines and sent back home. Or, you were captured by pirates and held for information.

In a way you were kind of thankful. The Heart Pirates were feared, yes, but not completely inhumane like other crews.

And anything was better than being sent home.

Or being dead.

Still, your mind raced.

Sora was okay, but where was he?

Where was the rest of your crew?

Your crew was wiped out.

As far as the world knew, you were dead.

Law's voice pulled you from your thoughts.

"Clione will be back in when I leave"

He then turned to walk out of the infirmary, but added one more thing before he left.

"Shiina-ya"

"Hm?" you looked up at him.

"Thank you for cooperating."

You just nodded your head.

He then disappeared behind the door.

And then in came Clione, fresh glass of water in hand that he set on your bedside.

You adjusted and got comfy under the bed sheets curling up on your side, your eyelids falling shut.

"Hey."

You heard Cliones' voice.

"Hm?" you responded not bothering to open your eyes or move.

"Thank you. Y'know. For covering for me."

You felt a smile creep up on your lips as you spoke,

"You did something nice for me first. It's the least I could do in return."

You heard him let out a heavy sigh as he sat down in a chair beside your bed.

"You know, you're not all that bad. Y'know for being a prisoner and an enemy pirate and all."

You let out a slight laugh.

"Why, thank you." you murmured.

He said something else, but that was all you heard before you drifted off to sleep.
