Chapter 39 - The Queen
A/N: Even if this story is read by only a few readers, I like the story and its course very much. I plan to concentrate on this story for now and only continue writing the other stories when I have completed this book. The ideas for this book just fall to me and my imagination. And maybe I'm continuing to write here a little out of spite, because despite all my efforts, this story is only being read by you few. I finished!
On our first evening in our "cell", the Demoids brought us, in addition to more hay, a few pieces of meat and a pastry that tasted almost like bread. They exchanged the torch, let us go to the toilet (in the bushes) one by one, and then brought us back. Nobody talked to me any more than the most necessary. What there was: "Your turn. Come along. Step back. Back again. See you tomorrow."
After the last of us was out and relieved our bladders, we got our sleeping bags and some blankets. The blankets and sleeping bags along with the hay resulted in warm cozy beds. At least cozier than the past nights Yibo and I spent on hard ground.
When everyone but me had fallen asleep, I had too many thoughts in my head keeping me awake, I lay next to Yibo in his arms and looked toward the torch. The fire of the torch was flickering and dancing a little. So there had to be a breeze coming from somewhere. But where? At that moment, however, I didn't really care. I was tired, I was pleasantly warm, and I felt safe in Yibo's arms. Nevertheless, I could not fall asleep. Because the thoughts turned and turned in my head.
At some point I closed my heavy eyelids. I thought for a moment about what had happened in the city and what we had seen, then I fell asleep. But it didn't feel like sleep to me. Because when I opened my eyes again, I was still in the basement room and in Yibo's arms. Well, my body did. My soul or spirit, whichever of these is correct, had detached from my body and I looked down at myself.
I touched my arm to see what was happening and I couldn't feel anything. This was really very strange. Slowly I turned around to the others who were also sleeping peacefully. Then I slowly walked to the door, wanting to try to touch the doorknob, but my hand slipped through. And it slipped not only through the door handle, but also right through the door.
Cautiously, I took another step and stood in the middle of the door. One half of my body was still in the basement room, the other outside in the hallway, where the two guards stood with their heads bowed on either side of the door. They were obviously asleep. Cautiously, I stepped all the way out the door and walked down the corridor to the stairs.
Curious, I looked all around the house. There are many rooms there and each of them seemed to be crowded with Demoids. Most of them were asleep and the few that were awake were having fun with each other. The Amores had done the same in our presence. But the Amores didn't sound as kinky as these grunting, moaning Demoids, doing it with each other like wild animals.
I quickly left these rooms and continued my search. At first I didn't know what for, until I understood. King Raha had not been there! He didn't seem to be staying in this house. But if he was not there, where was he?
In my spirit-like state, I went outside. Not out the back where the bushes are used as toilets, but out the front. I expected to find a camp there. But there was nothing and no one. It had been dead quiet. It had started snowing again, so the sky was not black but slightly orange. A light wind was blowing, which I could see on the trees but not feel myself. I felt nothing, no wind, no snowflakes, no cold.
I walked along the path we had come in the morning and arrived at the gate. It was locked. I just walked through it and jumped up in fright when suddenly, out of nowhere, a deer jumped past me. And as I jumped up like that, my body took off. I didn't land on my feet again, but flew upwards, further and further.
Immediately I remembered the many dreams in which I reached this way from one point to the next and loved to fly. But I could not land. Whenever I tried, I got faster, flying uncontrollably higher and higher with each attempt. Then I would plummet towards the ground, only to fly up again at the last second, until at some point I fell, woke up, and found myself out of my bed.
And just like in those dreams, that's how I felt at that moment. I flew higher and higher and the fear of falling was huge. But I did not fall, but had the feeling of being grabbed by an invisible force and pulled somewhere. Something grabbed me and pulled me further and further and then everything was dark around me.
Suddenly I found myself in a kind of castle. The walls looked like rock walls of a cave. I heard footsteps and voices and out of reflex I wanted to hide. But then I remembered that I was invisible and went to see who was talking.
I saw King Raha talking to a woman. He called her queen. His wife? No, as I realized when he got down on one knee in front of her and kissed her hand. "My queen, I promise you." He said and she gently stroked his head.
"You must not forget." She said with a smile and sat down on her throne. A few Demoids joined her, guards as I suspected and a Demoid in a noble robe. He sat down on the throne next to the queen. He looked sick and weak, coughing and sweating profusely.
"My beloved, why did you get up? You are supposed to stay in bed and rest." Scolded the queen visibly worried.
"I just wanted to check on you for a moment my dear. I've seen you so seldom in the last few days." Replied the king.
"I had to govern my people. Go back and I promise I will sleep with you tonight." She said and the king nodded. His guards helped him up and carefully took him back out of the throne room.
Raha watched them until they were out of the door and had closed it. Then he walked up to the queen, pulled her up from her throne, wrapped his arms around her and kissed her. "Do you really have to stay with him tonight?" He asked.
"Yes. He'll get suspicious if I don't. Tomorrow night you can come back to my room." Said the queen and kissed Raha. When they released the kiss, the queen went to the door, told the guards to take a break and that she had something personal to discuss with Raha and did not want to be disturbed, closed the door again and locked it.
When she returned to Raha, she stripped off her dress and stood naked in front of him. He wrapped his arms around her, kissed her passionately and they ultimately made love. For some reason I couldn't get away from there, as if someone wanted me to see this. And it wasn't until they were done that I felt that pull on me again and I flew away.
The next moment I saw the queen standing by a grave. She was sniffling into a cloth but had no tears in her eyes. Again and again, she and Raha looked treacherously at each other while everyone around them mourned the deceased young king. The mourners offered their condolences to the young queen and left the scene one by one until only the queen and Raha remained.
"We did it. No one noticed that we poisoned the king. After the Official Mourning Period, I will announce that I want to remarry and look for a new king. As the closest confidant of the late king, I can make you my husband. Then you will finally be king by my side." Said the queen and kissed Raha.
Raha nodded and smiled. He wrapped her in his arms and his smile disappeared. Instead, he showed a treacherous grin that revealed that his plan seemed to be a little different from the queen's. But the latter did not notice the look and clung to him happily. Together they had been putting poison in the king's wine for weeks and he was getting sicker and sicker. The healers and doctors could not explain why the king did not get well and no one knew what was wrong with him. Then he died and the plan of the two secret lovers worked.
Again the Invisible Force pulled me away and I ended up somewhere else again. This time in the room of the queen. She was sitting on her bed and Raha was next to her. She showed him her signet ring. "Only those who wear the ring may call themselves queen or king. I could give you my ring now and everyone would have to accept you as the new king." She explained to Raha, who hypocritically asked her about the ring and what purpose it served.
Once again I was pulled away. This time I was in some kind of jungle or something. Only then did I realize that I was no longer in the human world, although that should have been clear to me long ago.
I saw the queen and Raha. The two were standing at the edge of the jungle, arguing. Raha had tried to persuade the queen to go with him into the jungle. Supposedly, he would know his way around there and would know that there would be no danger for her. She, however, vehemently refused, which angered Raha and that is why he asked her: "I thought you trusted me? Then prove to me that you really trust me! How can we rule the kingdom together if you don't trust me 100%?"
Hesitantly, the queen nodded and took Raha's hand. The two walked into the jungle and he led her deeper and deeper into it. At some point she asked him for a break, which he granted her. He told her he would get her some water, which should be somewhere nearby. She was not thrilled that he wanted to leave her alone, but to prove to him that she really trusted him, she let him go.
I saw Raha leave and followed him for a moment. Then I saw him talking to one of those jungle warriors! I guessed what Raha was up to, ran back and wanted to warn the queen. But she couldn't see or hear me. I screamed and screamed, tried to touch her. But nothing!
I had to watch helplessly as the jungle warrior crept up to the queen, grabbed her and sucked the blood from her. The jungle warrior simply dropped the dead queen to the ground and disappeared again. When Raha returned, he smiled as he found the queen lying dead on the ground. He lifted her arm, pulled the signet ring from her finger and put it on his finger. As if by some kind of magic, the ring fit him.
He then returned and summoned all the guards, soldiers, servants and every man, woman and child in the kingdom, showing them all that he was now wearing the signet ring and was therefore the new king. "The queen gave me this ring and jumped off a cliff. I could not do anything. She had just jumped. I think she couldn't cope with the death of the king." He said as everyone asked about the queen. "But now you have me and I promise you, we will no longer sit quietly and do nothing. We will finally show the Amores how dangerous we really are!" He shouted and everyone cheered.
Once again the Invisible Force pulled at me and I was back in the jungle. I was standing in front of the Dead Queen. Well, gee, she wasn't dead anymore. She was now one of the jungle warriors. She was infected and transformed. And she could see me. "I called you here and showed you everything! I need your help." She said.
"And with what?" I asked.
"I want my life back and only you and your friends, can help me do that."
"But how?"
"Find Bac! Ask him to help me."
"How can he help you? You're dead. Well, Undead."
"His blood has healing powers. Just a little of his blood is enough to free me from this nightmare. To save me."
"But..."
"Xiao Zhan. Find Bac before Raha finds him. Raha wants to kill Bac because he knows that Bac can resurrect the Undead creatures with his blood."
"But I don't know how to find him. He has disappeared."
"He is always near you. Your two destinies are intertwined."
"But we are captives of Raha. We're locked up and we can't get out."
"I know. And I'm going to help you."
"How will you do that?"
"Just as you explained to your mate and your friends. We'll ally ourselves."
"Then you were also among the murdering jungle warriors?"
"Yes. They obey my command. I am their queen. I killed the old queen and took her place. I swear to you, nothing will happen to you, your mate and your friends."
"But you killed humans! Why should I trust you? Who's to say you're not just out to trick me like Raha?"
"I killed the humans because they wanted to kill us. We weren't hunting them, we were hunting other creatures. But they hurt and injured us with those loud things. We fought back."
"You mean firearms? Because they attacked you, you slaughtered them?"
"That's our nature. We really only kill to feed ourselves. But in this case it was different. We had to fight back! We didn't kill humans before. We kept away from them. Or have you heard anything about us before?"
"No not that. But why did you hurt the Amore so badly that he died from his injuries?"
"We didn't. The Amores and we lived peacefully side by side. They left us alone and we left them alone. And when I wasn't an Undead, Bac and I got along just fine. We wanted to reunite our two folks. But then I fell in love with Raha and let him blind me."
"You killed your husband!"
"I did. And it was wrong. But I can't change that now. I had fallen under Raha's spell and wanted to do everything he wanted just to make him happy. We are like that when we fall in love. We'll do anything for the ones we love."
"Even kill innocent people?"
"Yes, even that."
"That's really sick."
"That may be sick for you humans. But for us, it's the highest proof of love."
"I can do without such a proof."
"But you would kill for your mate, wouldn't you?"
"I um... yes. But not innocent people."
"But how do you know who is guilty and innocent? If someone attacks your mate, you would protect him. Even if you find out afterwards that he was only attacking your mate out of fear or?"
"That's called a mistake."
"No, that's called love."
"If you say so."
"Yes. And now return again. You can count on us to come and free you. But if you want to live, you must not attack us. It is our natural survival instinct that would kill you. And once we have freed you, we will let you move on. We will not stop you or follow you. We will wait until you find Bac and then tell him that I need his help. Queen Janala needs his help! Remember my name. Janala!" She said. The next moment I had the feeling of falling from a great height and woke up startled at the moment I had almost reached the ground in my dream.
Yibo was awake and looked at me in horror. "What the hell was that? How could you be sleeping here next to me and come falling through the ceiling the next moment?" He asked me. So he could see my spirit body?
I told Yibo everything I had dreamed and he didn't doubt anything I said. Even more, he said that I was probably right after all and that we could ally ourselves with the jungle warriors. We were both still very skeptical about this, but somehow I believed Janala. I believed her when she said she would not hurt us.
Now we have to wait until the jungle warriors arrive and free us. It will probably be another bloodbath. But as long as they don't hurt us, I don't care.
