4: Promises
Nathan's POV~
We called Jen's older brother to come over and take care of her. We told him the situation and he understood quickly. We were currently waiting for her brother to come over and take care of Jen. As we waited, we continued to watch Haru do his own thing. He's so cute, it makes me want to hug him.
Haru noticed our glance and looked away. It was then we realized he was staring at the door. He ran over and opened the door to run out. The two of us got up quickly to bring him back. However, he didn't make it far when Jen's older brother carried him inside. Haru struggled to get out of his grip, which didn't happen as Haru was handed to me. Haru struggles in my arms, but my grip was firm. I can't lose you Haru, I just can't.
Josh glanced at me and I gave him Haru. He smiled happily and began to nuzzle and pet Haru, hugging him tightly. It made me smile just to see the two of them like this. I glance back at Jen's brother. He smiles and tells us we're free to leave, which we do.
We went out to the car, and this time it was me holding Haru. Haru continued to struggle, but I tightened my grip a bit, hinting he wasn't going anywhere. He understood and just relaxed, finding it pointless. We got home and before I could get out, Haru does and starts to run. But of course, he was no match for Josh's speed. Josh smiles and nuzzles into him more. I smile and tell them we should head inside.
Josh nods and we all head inside. We grab the package for the new code door to make sure Haru doesn't leave. It turns out that it isn't a door, it's a device that makes sure the door stays locked. So the moment you enter the code right, the door unlocks. And the key to the house still works. It didn't take long to set up and we soon noticed Haru was missing again.
We searched the house and couldn't find a thing. I went up to our room and looked inside his cage. Haru was sitting there, hugging his knees. It was very evident he was scared, and I don't blame him. He's been through a lot and living with people that are much taller and buffer than him is intimidating. I called up Josh as he continued to sit there.
Once Josh arrives, he sighs in relief to know Haru is fine. He saw that Haru was scared and frowned. We decided to just give him some time alone. The two of us went into the Manuel to see if we can find ways to make sure he's happy. It says humans can be entertained easily, but some of them are difficult. Judging based off Haru's personality, he's going to be difficult to make happy.
The two of us sighed and sat down on the couch. "Looks like the two of us have to find ways ourselves to keep Haru happy." Josh nods and we sigh. We turn on the pawstation and started to play random co-op games. I felt a presence as we played. I turned and looked to see Haru watching us play from a distance.
This gave me an idea. I walked over to Haru and before he could run into his cage, I picked him up and sat him between us. He looked a little scared, so I handed him the controller. Surprisingly, he could handle it fine, considering my hands are slightly bigger than his. He soon was comfortably playing and doing really well. I found an opportunity and picked him up, setting him on my lap. Because he was so into the game, he didn't even care. I smiled at this. Now we know a way to make him happy.
Soon, dinner time was coming up, so I went into the kitchen and started making dinner. I looked inside the Manuel and tried to find anything they'd think is good. But it seems a lot of humans have different preferences on food. I don't know what all he likes yet, so I'll have to try and find out at some point. I just decided to make something simple and go with Chili dogs and macaroni and cheese.
I heard the game stop and saw Josh holding Haru like a rag doll. He sets Haru down in a chair next to him and I gave Haru his food. Josh got up and grabbed his food as I sat down on the other side of Haru. I think it's time we have a long chat with him.
After I was done eating, I waited for Haru and Josh to finish too. Soon enough, the two of them were done, and before Haru could walk off, Josh took him back to the seat. I sighed and Josh does the same.
"Haru, we understand you're scared. This is a lot to take in. You woke up in a pet store and now you're our pet. And because you're our pet, we want to make sure you are happy here."
Josh nods in agreement with me and continues where I left off.
"In order to do that, as hard as it may be, we need to ask you to try trust us. We promise not to hurt you, and we promise to keep you safe. If you run off, we can't do that. We want to protect you, no. We have to protect you. You're probably the best thing that's happened to us."
Haru blushes at the compliment and just nods. I knew he probably wasn't good with the name, so I asked him with his actual name.
"Don, do you want us to use your name? Or do you want to be called Haru? We had to give you a name for the certification of adoption. If you had told us your name beforehand, we would've named you that. But right now, it's too late. But even then, while we're at home, we can still call you by your actual name. It's up to you. We just want to make sure you're comfortable around us, and around here."
Josh nodded to my statement. Don sighed and thought about it.
Don's POV~
I thought about their question and put thought into it. It didn't take long for me to have flashbacks to the human world, and I soon got scared. I just keep hearing my name being yelled at me and I can still see, feel, and smell everything that happened in that house. I started to panic and they could see it too. They both run over and hug me tightly, slowly calming me down.
"Just call me Haru or Don. Whichever you like. Just... Just don't use my full name..."
Their eyes showed remorse, but it seems they knew not to push it. The orange one picked me up and sat me again him on the couch. The white one sat next to us and I was soon being hugged tightly against their bodies.
"Don, we promise to protect you. We won't let anyone hurt you. And we promise that we'll do our best to keep you happy. If you need something, don't hesitate to ask."
The white one continued.
"As hard as it may be, please just give us the chance to keep you comfortable around us. We want to be able to make you happy and comfortable. So we need your trust to do that. Can you give us that chance?"
I think about it and soon nod. They smile and tighten their hold on me. We soon went upstairs and I went into my cage as they slept on the bed. I wonder if I can trust them. I guess I'll just have to give them that chance.
