3: The Vet
Josh's POV~
I was in my bed next to Nathan. I woke up early, and my arms were crossed with jealousy. I want to hug Haru!!! I get off the bed and take a peek at the cute human in his cage. I just want to take him out and hold him tight! I'll have my chance, I'll be sure of it.
I head into the kitchen and get started on making breakfast for the three of us. I look inside the Manual and find that humans typically eat everything we do. If they like it, that is. I get started and find that a recommended breakfast for humans are pancakes or waffles. I get started on making pancakes since we don't have a waffle maker.
After a little bit, Nathan enters the room. Probably smelled the pancakes. He looks at some I made for Haru and drools. He smiles and says "Oooh, pancakes!" He reaches for one, but I slapped his hand with the spatula that I was using. I gave a focused stare and told him they were Haru's. He nodded and got the plates out for me and himself.
After I was done making the pancakes, I got ready to make eggs and bacon. As I was cooking them, I noticed Haru slowly walking into the dining room. He noticed my gaze and hides in the doorframe. I smile at him and use my eyes to tell him that the food is his. It takes a couple of minutes, but soon he cautiously made his way for the food.
(NOTE: The bacon used in their world is made from a creature that exists in their world. This applies to other meats too. And they taste the same as well.)
As I was eating, I could see Haru staying still, and cautiously eating. I just want to hug him close right now! Soon, Nathan was done with his food and his phone went off. He headed into the other room and answered the call. I just stayed and watched Haru eat happily. I can tell Haru was still scared, but I just wish he wasn't scared anymore. That way I can hug and hold him close.
Nathan soon comes back from his phone call and nervously rubs the back of his neck. I rose my eyebrow at this. "What happened? Need to go in for work early?" He shakes his head and sits next to me. "Haru's got a vet appointment to go to. I'm just nervous on how it'll go." I nod my head and Haru looks at us in what looks like fear. Strange, it's as if he knows what we're talking about. But I've seen videos of pets that acted in certain ways once they heard the word 'vet.' Maybe Haru is like that.
We started to get stuff ready for the ride over to the vet. Fortunately for us, we know who the vet is. He's a friend from our Highschool that the two of us went to. After we got everything set up, we looked inside to see if we can find Haru. We ended up finding him in his cage. It must feel like his happy place or something.
We carefully took him out and I got to carry him as Nathan drove to the vet. Even if I'm just carrying him, it feels so nice to finally hug my little Haru. However, it only took about 10 minutes to get there, but at I had my fun while it lasted.
We went inside the office and sat in the waiting room. We looked at our surroundings and saw many new things. The most we've ever done here was visit, considering we've never had pets up until now. Our parents were very strict about parents though. Nathan comes from a family where pets aren't tolerated due to his family being clean freaks. For me personally, I'm the oldest out of 6 other siblings, so we had to keep as much money as possible. Amber was my first sister, then the rest came later on.
Soon, our friend, and the vet came out. Our friend was Jennifer Adams. She was one of the most popular people in the grade, but unlike most people, she's very nice. She doesn't talk about rumors, she doesn't smoke, she doesn't talk behind people's backs, she just isn't the person to be mean. Jennifer, or Jen for short, is a wolf.
She smiled at us. "Appointment for the human Haru." We both entered and Haru looked frightened. I held him close and gave him some reassuring strokes. He didn't seem to calm down though, which made me worry. Nathan seemed worried too and we went into the little room.
She started her check up on him, and it seems that Haru relaxed to her touch. Maybe it's because she's a female. Not only that, she always gave out a calming aura. Many have said she should be a therapist or psychologist. However, she insisted on becoming a veterinarian. And I will say, she's really good at it.
(NOTE: Human check ups are literally the same as normal doctors check ups in this world. Check ups for animals vary depending on what the animal is.)
After a little bit, she smiled at us. "Haru is healthy and doing well. In case you two were worried, he's just scared. It can take either a week or up to a few months for a human to relax in their new home." We both sigh in relief and sat down in chairs. At least we know it's because he's just scared. So that means he'll open up to us eventually.
I got curious, so I asked Jen something. "Does he not need a shot or anything?" She shakes her head with a smile. "Humans are very strongly resistant to our diseases and such. So we don't have to worry about him catching disease or anything. However, he does need to take the youth pill." We tilted our heads in confusion. She sighed and explained it to us.
"Humans have strong immune systems, but they also die quickly. Unlike us, they only live up to 78 to 116 years. Unlike us where we basically live forever. So I have to give him this pill so that he'll last for as long as possible. What it'll do is stop his growth process at the age of 21. Right now, my best guess is that he's probably 16, so he has a few more years."
The two of us nod our head and look at Haru. Haru just hid his face from us. She smiles and says "Don't worry, he'll open up soon, I guarantee it." She then left the room to get the medicine. Soon, we heard a small "I kind of doubt that." I looked at Nathan and asked him if it was him. His eyes went wide and shook his head no. We both look at Haru, who backs up.
Nathan looked back at me and asked "You don't think he did it, do you?" I shook my head. "You serious, there's no way a human can talk." We then hear and actually see Haru say "Well, tiger's shouldn't be able to talk either." Our eyes widen. Holy shit, he talked...
We looked at him intensely. "YOU CAN TALK?!?!" Haru gets scared by our yell and slowly nod his head while going back against the wall. I wanted to try something. "Haru, can I have a hug?" He just looks at me weirdly. "My name is not Haru, it's Donnie." Nathan sighed and walked by Haru. "Well, we're going to call you Haru. Sorry, but we signed the form for your name as Haru. We can't change it now, so your name is Haru from now on."
Haru's eyes widen. "B-But I have a name!" The two of us smiled at him. "Yeah, and it's Haru." He just sighed in defeat. Okay, that's it. Cuddling happens tonight. It makes me so happy he can talk! I just want to have a normal conversation with him, just like some rare pet owners can. I've heard of humans being able to talk to us, but they're very expensive and rare. I guess the ones who sold Haru didn't know that he could.
Soon, Jen came back with the medicine and handed it to him. He took it and she asked in soft voice "Is it good?" To her surprise, Haru replies with "No, not really." Her eyes widen, which ended up in her fainting. "J-JEN!"
