Sad thought

Florida having mostly one sided friendships/relationships with states

he has a positive perception of them/enjoys their company but they really don't care/don't think the same of hi

and then him finding out

either he already knew and just wanted to talk to someone

or he overhears them talking about him one day and finds out that way
