Chapter 51

"Where are you?" I ask the frantic girl on the other end of the line.

"I- I'm at..., the way-- ware-- warehouse." She stutters, slurring her words.

"Where is he? Where's Travis?"

"I d-- I don't know."

My chest becomes heavy. "Okay, don't go anywhere. I'm on my way."

"Hurry." She says lowly.

I hang up the phone and rush over to my closet, grabbing my black hoodie. It's 10 o'clock. No busses are running. It would take me an hour to get to the warehouse by bus, even if they were.

Think Think

I pick my phone up and call the only person I know will drop everything to help me.

...

"Did she say anything else?" Caleb asks, speeding down the wet road.

"No, she just said she was at the Warehouse, and Travis wasn't there. She didn't sound good. She must have taken something." I say.

"Did you try calling her again?" He asks.

"Yes, she's not answering." I pick up my phone and try calling her again, still no answer.

"So, it's a warehouse?" He questions.

"Warehouse, loft. He and his sister stay there. Sometimes his friends stay there too." I explain.

"Do you think its other people in there?" The tires screech against the pavement as he turns right. The rain is coming down even harder now; his windshield wipers are turned to the max.

"I don't know. I didn't hear anyone."

"Well, is it safe?"

"You don't have to come in," I tell him.

"I'm not going to let you go in there alone. I'm coming in."

"I shouldn't have called you," I say. I told myself I would stay away from him, and here I go calling him soon as I need him. I'm still using him.

"You should have. I told you I would be here for you, whatever you need, whenever you need me."

I don't respond to him. I continue staring out the window. Worry is building in the pit of my stomach, the way Katie sounded on the phone, so scared and confused.

I think back to when I used to take whatever Travis would give me. I didn't even care what it was; everything he gave always made me feel nothing, nothing at all. That temporary high was the best feeling ever. I loved it.

"What did you tell your parents?" he asks.

"I just told them I was going out to get some air." They didn't question it. When I came back downstairs, they were washing the dishes and talking. My father asked where I was going, and I told him I was just going out to get air. He said no, but then my mother said it was okay, and she told me not to be long. Before my father had a chance to go against what she said, I was already out the door.

...

"It's right up there," He pulls up right in front of the brick warehouse. It looks the same, run-down but modern. It's still raining outside, but it's not raining as hard as it was in the beginning. Soon as the car stops, I open the door and hop out. I walk up to the Warehouse and bang loudly on the door. No one answers; I bang on the door again.

"Maybe she called her parents and left," Caleb says.

"She didn't." I bang on the door, and this time, yell her name out.

"Maybe we should call the cops." He suggests.

"No, no cops." I back away from the house and walk around it. I remember that sometimes Travis would leave the side door unlocked. I get to the door and pull the rusted handle. The metal door comes open; I walk inside the Warehouse and down the hallway. I look around at all the tables that spread out. They all have something different on them—pills of different colors and sizes. I don't remember him having this many drugs when I was here.

"Where, does he sleep?" Caleb asks.

"Upstairs." We both walk to the stairs that are on the other side of the room. I rush up the stairs. When I reach the second to last step, my eyes go directly to his bed. Red hair sprung across the blue sheets. It's a pale body across the bed. The girl is wearing nothing but her undergarments. I rush over to the side of the bed. I see her face confirming it's her, it's Katie. There's puke on the floor. Right beside it is a needle. I step over it and turn her body over. She's burning up, she looks pale, and her body is damp from sweat.

"Is she-"

"No." I cut Caleb off before he even asks. I point to the shower across the room. "Run some warm water." I urge him. He rushes over and turns the shower on.

"Katie." I shake her a little. I call her name again. She starts to moan, but she is still going in and out of consciousness. I lift her halfway off the bed. Caleb rushes back over and grabs her other side. He lifts her off the bed and carries her over to the shower. He walks all the way in with her. The warm water splashes on my skin; he sits her down on the shower floor. Still holding onto her. He's completely drenched. She tries to open her eyes; her breathing is not as shallow as it was before. Caleb pushes her red hair out of her face.

"Get her clothes," Caleb instructs me. I walk away from the shower and over to the bed. I look on the floor, but I don't see her clothes. I bend down and look under the bed, nothing. I walk over to the other side of the platform bed. I will just get her one of Travis shirts. It will be long enough to cover her. I open one of the drawers and pull out a grey T-shirt. My eyes go to the trash can that's beside the dresser. There's a newly used condom inside the trash can. I look back at the shower over to Katie. A thought crosses my mind. I don't want to think about it, but I know what he tried to do to me, and I wasn't even high. Did he rape her?

The warehouse door slides open. In comes Travis. He looks up at me. "What the hell?" He says from the bottom floor, shouting.

I walk over to the shower and hand Caleb the shirt.

"Jayda," Caleb calls my name, trying to get me from going down the stairs, but it's too late. I am already making my way down.

"What the hell are you doing here? And who the fuck is that upstairs?" He sits the black duffle bag in his hand down on the ground and walks closer to me. I don't move.

"What did you do to her?" I yell.

"What are you talking about?" He yells back.

"Did you drug her? She doesn't do heroin, and yet I find her upstairs OD'ing on it?"

He presses her lips together and says, "I don't know what that bitch told you, but she does heroin. I told her to wait till I got back, but... well, you know how it gets when you are addicted to something." He smiles wickedly at me. I hear footsteps coming down the stairs. I turn and see Caleb with Katie in his arms again. The t-shirt I gave him is on her now. It covers her whole body just as I said it would.

"Woah, Woah Woah. Where are you taking her?" Travis asks, and then he moves in front of Caleb.

"Get out of my way," Caleb growls.

"Woah, you got a feisty one here, huh Jayda. He doesn't look as scary as the other one, though." He says, referring to Ryder. Travis looks him up and down. He seems like he is contemplating whether or not he should move out the way. He smiles and then moves out the way.

Caleb walks past him, and so do I. Before I reach the door, Travis says, "Whenever she wakes up, if she wakes up, tell her, don't come back here," I slide open the warehouse door, Caleb walks out. "Oh, and Jayda." He calls.

I look back. "You just cost me money, a lot," he says. I roll my eyes. I slide the door.

...

"Will she be okay?" Caleb asks as he lays her down on my bed. I pull the cover over her.

"She'll be fine. She just needs to sleep it off." I say.

"What are you going to tell your parents?" He asks.

My parents are in their room asleep. I'm glad today they decided to go to bed early and not stay up late working. I don't know what I would've told them if they saw Caleb carrying a passed out Katie into the house. There's no way I could've exposed her without exposing me also.

"I don't know. I'll probably just tell them I ran into her and invited her over." I turn the light off and walk out of the room. Caleb follows behind me downstairs to the door.

"Thank you,"

"You don't have to thank me." He responds.

"I do. You didn't have to help me."

He sighs. "Jayda, I told you I'll always be here for You. I meant that. Even if you don't wanna be with me."

"Caleb, I do want to be with you. I just can't, not right now. I need time for myself."

"I understand. I do." He says. His brown eyes stare into mine. I can feel gravity slowly pulling our bodies closer together.

"Goodnight." I quickly say before I do something I'll regret.

"Goodnight." He opens the door and walks out. He sounded a little angry. His voice was hostile. I take a deep breath before turning off the living room light and curling up on the couch.
