Chapter 46

"You okay?" Caleb asks, startling me.

I hop up from the floor, with the paper still in my hand. "Yeah... I um.. I just dropped these papers." I bend down to gather the rest of the papers, place them into the folder, and then back onto the desk. I slip my feet into my shoes then bend down to tie them.

He asks, "Are you sure?"

"Yes, I'm fine." I walk past him and out of the office. Then straight out the front door over to his car that's parked across the street, he and Logan are right behind me. The car door unlocks, and I get in.

"What's wrong with her?" Logan whispers to Cale, not good enough because I heard him.

"I don't know," he responds. Caleb gets behind the wheel and then looks at me. He doesn't say anything; he just stares for a second, searching my face trying to read my emotions. He then looks away and starts the car.

The whole car ride to the theater was silent. Caleb pulls into the parking lot outside of the theater. I texted Violet like three minutes ago, telling her we were close; she said that they were already there, and they'll be waiting for us out front.

"You didn't tell me James was going to be here," Logan says. When I turn my head to look out the window, I see him, Violet, and Liam standing out front.

"You didn't ask," Caleb says back. Logan huffs and opens the car door getting out. I open the car door also. Before I can get out, though, Caleb grabs my hand.

"Wait." He says, stopping me from leaving. I turn around and look at him. "Are you sure you're okay?" he presses more.

I reply, "I'm fine, honest," even though it's a lie.

How can I tell him we are moving?

Whatever this is, it just started, and I feel good, honestly. I finally feel okay for once in my life, and now this can all be ruined because my parents want to move. Why would they even want to move?

A fresh start, maybe? I cant start over in a new place; I just can't.

"Okay," he says.

...

I'm trying to concentrate on the movie, but I just can't. All I can think about is us moving to LA and why we need a house that big.

They bought a house without even asking me how I feel. They didn't even care to think about how I would feel making a big move like that—leaving behind the people I consider my friends—leaving Caleb. I don't want to leave him.

James and Logan are sitting in the row in front of us. Logan sits on the end, Liam is beside him, Violet is beside Liam, and James is beside Violet. Caleb and I had to sit a row behind. There were no more seats on that row.

I've caught Logan, and James glance at each other several times. It must be awkward for James with Logan being here. I would've warned James, but I didn't know he was coming.

James looked nervous when he spotted Logan walking up to him. They both greeted each other awkwardly. It seemed like they were happy to see each other, but they were forcing themselves not to show it.

My phone vibrates in my pocket. I pull it out to see who's calling me. It's Ryder, shocker there. Why does he keep calling me? What part of I don't want to talk to you does he not get?

"Maybe you should just block him," Caleb whispers in my ear. I quickly hang up the phone and put it back in my pocket.

Caleb leans over and presses his lips against my cheek. I look at him and smile. A small giggle leaves my body. "What was that for?" I ask.

"No reason." He says. He leans back in; this time, our lips connect. Our mouths move in the same motion, just as it did yesterday. His tongue enters my mouth this time. My hand rests on his face.

God, I hope no one is watching us.

"So, did you guys enjoy the movie?" Violet asks James and me. Once Caleb and the guys walk off somewhere.

"Yeah," I say. I hope she doesn't ask me something about it; I wasn't paying attention; the first half was spent thinking about what I found in my dad's office, and the second half was spent with my eyes close kissing Caleb.

"So, you watched the movie?" James asks me, raising his eyebrow.

"I did,"

"Mhm sure," he says. He and Violet both smile at me. "So why didn't you tell me Logan was coming?" He asks, smacking my arm.

"I didn't know he was coming until he and Caleb showed up at my door." I defend myself.

Violet then asks, "Is it awkward with him being here?"

He responds, "No," and then says, "I mean, he was just a hookup, nothing serious. So I don't mind."

"Did you want it to be something serious? I saw you look at him more than once." I state, remembering the several looks they passed each other.

"I wasn't looking at him!" He snaps, trying to convince me I saw different

"You were," Violet says. " I saw you. You were sitting right beside me."

James scoffs in disbelief.

"It's okay. He was looking at you too," I say, and then he smiles.

"Guys, look!" Violet says. I turn around and see Ryder and some girl. Even though I can't see her because she is facing the opposite way, I only see her backside; I know it isn't Ashely. She has long black hair and has on a pink mini shirt, along with a white cropped long sleeve shirt.

We are far away, so Ryder doesn't see us. But we see him.

"Well, he moved on fast," James says.

"Yeah, I guess he did."

The boys are walking back over to us. I hope Caleb doesn't see him. I hope Ryder doesn't see us.

"So, you guys wanna go out to eat?" Violet asks.

We are at some restaurant, James swore was the best; I'm looking at the menu, and the options don't seem that good.

"James, I know you did not seriously drag us to a vegetarian place," Violet says, what all of us were thinking.

"Well, excuse me, but you guys never said what type of restaurant. You said to pick a good restaurant. And this place is good," he says.

"Yeah, but nobody here is a vegetarian or likes vegetarian food," Liam adds.

"I like vegetarian food," Logan says, taking James' side.

Caleb questions him. "Since when?"

"I like salads," he replies.

James rolls his eyes and then says, "Salads are not the only part of being a vegetarian."

I ended up ordering a salad, so did everyone else; James ordered some meatless steak; at least that's what it's called on the menu. Everything was meatless this and meatless that. The only thing I've ever eaten meatless was a salad, so that's what I chose.

You can't go wrong with salads.

"So did you guys find someone to fill Ashely's spot in the play?" Liam asks James.

"Nope. We may have to cancel it," he answers.

"Why didn't you guys have an understudy?" I ask

"Ashely insisted that we didn't get an understudy." James states. Of course, she did. "She said it was no need because she was going to do the play, and no one would take her place."

"Well, I guess she would've never thought her boyfriend would break up with her," Liam accusatory.

I rub my earlobe and toss my salad around with the fork.

"Yup, I still can't believe it. But now I definitely do. After we saw him with that girl at the theater."

"Ryder was at the theater?" Caleb asks, chiming into the conversation.

"Yeah." James responds then looks to me, "He was there with some girl," he adds.

"She didn't even look familiar. I know everyone at Crossland. She definitely doesn't go there." Violet says.

"Why did they break up?" Logan asks. Everyone goes silent; nobody says anything; they all make awkward facial expressions but stay quiet.

"Who knows why Ryder does what he does. I mean, he didn't even love her, so it's no surprise they broke up," I say.

"And how do you know that?" Liam asks aggressively.

Violet scorns him, saying his name.

"No, Violet. Why are we sitting around acting like we don't know why Ryder broke up with Ashely. It's because of Jayda. We all know it." Liam's voice is now raised. "We know what people say about her. We know what she's done!"

"Don't talk about her like that." Caleb defends me.

"And then there's you." he points his hand at Caleb, and his jaw clenches. "Maybe it is true, maybe she did fuck everyone at school, and now she's moved on."

"Liam!" Violet shouts.

I slide my seat back and walk out of the restaurant.

I open those doors and rush outside. Cool raindrops hit my face. I walk out of the parking lot and down the street. I'm not far from home. It's about a ten minutes walk from here. I wonder if Caleb came after me? He didn't immediately get up when I did. I'm out of the parking lot now, and he still isn't behind me.

Maybe he believes what Liam said. I didn't even know Liam felt that way about me. Then again, he never really talked to me, and I did always feel like his smiles and greetings were fake. He only did them because Violet was there.

Caleb must hate me. I can't... I can't have him hate me.

Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if we moved, perhaps that's what I really need to do what I have to do—I've been distracted. I'm supposed to be fixing my parent's relationship; I'm supposed to be preparing to end my life.

Not kissing boys and going on dates, this isn't me.

I'm three houses away from my house. I can see from here that my mother and father are not back yet. There are no cars in the driveway. As I get closer, I spot a familiar vehicle. Ryder's car is across the street.

It's too late to turn around. He already spots me and gets out of the car. I try to reach my house before him. But we meet right at the walkway.

He asks. "Are you okay?" I look up at him, but I don't say anything. The tears are falling from my eyes and down my brown cheeks.

"Jayda. Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" He continues to press more into why I am crying.

"No," I say softly.

"What's wrong?"

I look up at him. "You!" I shout. "You're what's wrong? Everything you do always falls on me!"

"What are you talking about?!" He asks, genuinely confused.

"Why did you break up with Ashely? Why did you do that?"

"I...I don't know," he answers.

"Well, when you figure it out, be sure to tell everyone because everyone thinks I'm the reason you broke up with her. Everyone hates me for breaking up their star couple. I can't... I can't have people hating me, I just." I can't even get the words out. A sob escapes my mouth... and I continue crying more.

"I don't hate you." He says—his words have no effect on me. I look up at him into his green eyes.

I say to him. "Please just go,"

His lips press together, and he says, "I'm not leaving you."

"Please." I try to walk past him, but he grabs me

"I won't leave you." He says firmly. I stare at him for a second; I know he won't leave; he'll argue with me back and forth until I concede. I want to but I can't, I can't let him in my house. I won't do that.

My head is telling me no; I'm thinking of a hundred logical reasons why he can't come in. But my heart, my heart only comes up with one reason. If he comes in, I won't cut.

Heart or Head? I ask myself.

Before I can choose, the sound of a car door slamming startles me. When I turn around to see who it is, I see the figure standing in the rain. Caleb.
