Chapter 45

Well, I finished all my homework. I look over at my black clock that sits on my white nightstand. It's only four P.M. It feels like I've been working forever, but it's only been an hour.

I woke up around eleven. Then I took a shower, got dressed, and went downstairs to grab something to eat.

My mom and dad were sitting at the table. My mother had her files scattered across the dinner table, as always. I don't know why she never works in her study. She has one right across the hall from my father's. I've only ever seen her in there two or three times.

My mother and father both greeted me with weird smiles on their faces; as I grab an apple from the glass bowl.  I stared at both of them and asked them why they were looking at me like that.

My mother said. "So you and Caleb were out there a long time yesterday."

I rolled my eyes and sat in one of the high chairs at the island.

"What time did he leave?" My father then asked.

I responded. "I don't know, like around midnight,"

My mother then asked, "His parents let him stay out late?"

And I said, "Mom, he's eighteen,"

"So, I had a curfew when I was eighteen." she fired back.

I just shook my head and didn't respond.

After a few minutes, I moved to the dining room table where they were still sitting; my mother had her glasses on and was reading through files, my father was typing up his proposal to Paul on his laptop.

I texted Violet back and forth about tonight. She is super excited. She said she always wanted to go on a double date. I tried to tell her it wasn't a date, but she didn't believe me. She sent me pictures of different outfits and asked me to choose one for her for tonight.

All of them were ugly; her style is nothing like my tomboy, gothic style. I didn't tell her that, though. I asked myself if those were the only three outfits I had left, which one could I tolerate. I chose and then liked the photo of the one I wanted her to wear.

When it turned twelve, my mother got a call from Susan. Susan is one of my mother's country club friends. She invited her out for lunch at Montels, one of the fanciest and expensive restaurants in town. My parents have taken me there twice. The food is not all that for their jacked up prices.

It's good, but it's not worth the money. My mother accepted the invitation. Minutes later, she was putting the scattered paper away back into the folders."Well, what are you guys planning on doing today?" She asked my father and me.

My father looked up from his computer and said, "Uhh, I don't know. I was thinking about going to the gym. I guess I'll have to wait until you get back."

I blurted out. "I don't need you to babysit me." They both looked at me, and I added, "I don't need you to babysit me because I won't even be here."

"Oh, and where exactly are you going?" My father asked.

I said, "I'm going to the movies, with Violet and her boyfriend. Oh, and James and Caleb."

"So you're going on a date?" My mother squealed.

"No, it's not a date. We are all just hanging out." I said. My mother raised her eyebrows at me like she knows I'm not telling the truth, even though I am.

"Well, it's fine with me." She said. It shocked me because I thought she didn't like Caleb.

"Me also." My father said too. "As long as you're not hanging with Ryder Adams, I'm good," he added.

"Ryder Adams! I didn't know you knew him." My mother said.

"I don't really know him, we were working on the Romeo and Juliet project together, but since that's over, we're over," I paused and then changed my statement, "As we are no longer partners."

A few minutes after that, she walked away and went upstairs; an hour later, she came back down, kissed me, then my father, and then left.

I told my father I was going upstairs to do homework, which was about two hours ago. I didn't start right away. I look back over at the clock. It's 4:15. Fifteen minutes?! It's only been fifteen minutes; why is the time going by so slow?

Okay, I'll admit I am a little anxious to see Caleb. I mean, after that kiss we shared yesterday, the way I kissed him. I liked it. I want to do it again soon.

He technically isn't the only boy I ever kissed. I've kissed Travis. Correction: he kissed me, he pressed me against a wall and then kissed me. It was disgusting the way he tried to force his tongue into my mouth, the way his breath smelled like cigarettes and alcohol. I tried to push him off of me; the harder I fought, the more he fought back. I remember his cold hands under my shirt. I remember him using one hand to pin me against a wall and his other hand finding its way to my pants' buttons. I tried to grab his hand, but I couldn't. By that time, he pinned both of my hands above my head with only his one hand holding both of mine. His cold hand reached inside of my pants and touched me on my most private area. The way his hand felt against me, I cried and pleaded for him to stop. His wet tongue and cold lips trailed against my neck. The minute I felt his grip loosen around my hands, without hesitating, I used all of my strength and pushed him off of me. I ran out of the warehouse as fast as I could.

My phone vibrates against the table, breaking me from my horrific memory. I wipe the tears that have fallen unknowingly from my eyes.

I'll pick you up at six -Caleb.

I flip my phone back over and get up from my chair. My dad told me to tell him what time Caleb was coming. I walk downstairs and walk towards my father's office. As I reach the door, I hear him talking to someone, and I stop outside the door at the side so he can't spot me.

"We'll tell her soon. I promise, but right now isn't the best time, she can't relapse. Jayda comes before everything, even you." he says.

Tell me what? What could my parents possibly tell me that would make me relapse.

"I love you too, baby, always. I'll see you tonight." he hangs up the phone, and I walk through the door. He looks up at me like he just got caught. Eyes wide, jaw clenched.

"Caleb said he'll be here at six," I say. I won't confront him about it now. I don't want to ruin my day. Well, I know it is ruined now, all day I'll only be able to think about what it is they have to tell me.

"Sounds good; I'll go ahead and change." He stands up from his chair and walks out of the office.

"Where is that shirt?" I ask out loud—the doorbell rings. I back away from my closet and scan my room one more time.

I spot the sleeve of the shirt peeking out from under my bed. I rush over and grab the blue shirt off the floor; I slip it over my head and pull it down. I rush out of the room and down the stairs.

"Hey," Caleb says when I open the door.

"Hey," I say breathlessly; looking for clothes was really a workout.

"Are you okay?" he asks.

"Yeah, I'm fine." I didn't even notice the boy that's standing beside him. He has fair skin, brown hair, and brown eyes. He is wearing a red polo shirt along with blue jeans.

"Oh, this is Logan," Caleb introduces his friend.

"I've heard a lot about you," I say, even though I haven't heard much, only that he and James used to date.

"And youre Jayda. I've also heard a lot about you," he says, smiling.

"Okay, okay," Caleb stopping him from continuing. "Are you ready?"

"Uh, yeah, I just have to grab my shoes." I open the door gesturing for them to come in. Logan scans the place.

"Wow, you weren't kidding. This place is huge." Logan says. They both walk into the living room.

"I'll be back,"  I walk upstairs and into my room. I want to wear my new shoes, the ones my mom bought me the Sunday we went shopping for school. I stand on my tiptoes and grab the shoebox off the shelf. I open the box, and the shoes have one of those bands holding them together. I try to pop it, but it's too thick.

Scissors... I need scissors.

I look at my desk, and my scissors aren't there. I forgot my parents hid everything sharp. But I did see scissors on my father's desk. I take the shoes out of the box and carry them downstairs. Logan and Caleb are both sitting on the couch, talking. "Almost ready," I say

Caleb jokingly groans. "Why do girls always take so long to get ready?"

"Shut up," I say before turning down the hallway.

When I walk into my father's study, I search his desk for scissors. I open the draw on the left, and it's locked. I open the draw on the right. It's unlocked.

Then I spot the black scissors sitting on top of everything. I cut the band around my shoes, one by one; they drop onto the floor. While reaching for them, a folder full of papers falls on the floor.

Oh no, my dad is going to kill me. I'm not even supposed to be in here.

While grabbing the papers, trying to stuff them back into the folder. A paper catches my eye. It has a house on it. It's a big house and an even bigger house than the one we live in. I look over the paper. It says the house was sold for seven hundred thousand dollars. It has five bedrooms and six bathrooms. I read the address.

5800 Lipton St

Los Angeles, California 90239

I pick up one of the other papers; it's a property title for the house in the picture. It has the same address I look at the bottom of the title. It has my dad's signature. Just then, something clicks. I swear I can feel the air leave my body.

We're moving!
