Chapter 41
It's finally Friday. The week has seemed longer than usual. Wednesday and Thursday went by super slow. Well, at least the school day went by slow.
Wednesday was the slowest. I spent the whole day looking over my shoulder, waiting... no anticipating Ryder. I didn't see him all day until English. He sat on the right side with Ashely in front of him and the other football players surrounding them. Ashely spotted me and made a smart remark, then half the class laughed, including Ryder.
Then I saw him again during lunch. He stood right behind me in line. I swear he was so close I could feel the heat from his body on me. His friends were with him; they made their sexual remarks towards me and another girl that was in front.
I ignored it. I wanted to run off and cry, but I didn't. Instead, the girl in front of me did. I think her name was Jessica.
Thursday, I didn't see him at all, not even in class. I don't think he came to school. Not that I was looking for him or anything. But it's easy to know when he's not there. There's something different about the school when he isn't here; people seem more relaxed. I know I did.
"Okay, so I'll be picking you up after school and taking you to your session. After your session, I'll have to get you an uber back home. I'll be at home preparing all day." my mother says, referring to tonight's dinner.
I stop looking at the road, and I turn to her. "It's just dinner," I say. I don't know why she is going all out for it.
"Actually, it's not." she corrects me. "Your father is trying to partner with Paul's dealership, and I guess he's hoping this dinner will win him over."
"Well, why couldn't dad take him to lunch or something. Why do we have to have a whole dinner? And why does Jeanine have to come?" I growl, remembering the stuck up later I met years ago.
"I know you don't like her, but please try to be kind, and she's coming because that's his wife."
I hate her. I know hate is a strong word. But I really do hate them. They're so snooty. I can tolerate Jeanine, but Paul, god, is he infuriating. My dad tolerates them because they are rich and known. Paul owns the most dealerships in the country. I guess it's a good marketing strategy to know the owner of one of the country's top dealerships. This is good for my dad because I know he trades a lot with him.
My mom pulls into the school's parking lot. "Oh, and Katie is coming," she adds.
My mouth drops open. "Are you serious?"
"Yes." she sighs. "It'll be fine," she reassures me.
I roll my eyes, open the car door, and get out.
This day can't get any worse.
...
*meet me in the 2nd-floor girl's bathroom -James
*Now?- Violet
*Yes, now!!! -James.
*I'm in class
*We all are Jayda. But this is important. -James
I huff and raise my hand.
The teacher acknowledges me.
"Can I be excused?" I ask. He nods his head.
I walk out of the classroom and up the stairs. Violet is coming down the stairs.
"Do you know what this is about?" I ask her.
She shakes her head, "No."
"Do you think it's really important?" I ask as we walk towards the girl's bathroom.
"I doubt it," she says while rolling her eyes. James is known for being overly dramatic; no surprise, he is in the drama club.
James is pacing back and forth as I open the bathroom door.
"So what was so important you called me out of SAT prep," Violet says.
He holds his hand out to us. "Hold on. I have to gather my thoughts. He says. Violet and I look at each other. "Okay." He collects himself. "I would say you may want to take a seat for this, but there are no seats. Anyway, what I am about to tell you is confidential information. It stays between us."
"Okay," Me and Violet both say together.
"Ashely Forbes and Ryder Adams broke up!" He says. Violet gasps at his words. I don't react. At least not on the outside. That is not what I expected him to say. I don't know how I should feel, should I feel anything? I'm kind of angry. Not because they broke up but because I was dragged out of class for this.
"How do you know?" Violet urges.
"Well, you guys know how I'm in the play, Wuthering Heights, and you know Ashely is playing the lead role, Catherine Earnshaw. Amy heard from Brittany, who heard from Monica. As you know, Monica is Ashely's right-hand bitch. Anyway, Monica said that Ashely is not doing the play anymore. And when asked why? Monica stated, and I quote." he pauses and pulls his phone from his pocket. "Ashely and Ryder just broke up, and she is not in the right state of mind to take on the lead role of Catherine." He shows Violet and me the phone.
"I'm sorry, but how does this concern Violet and me?" I ask, irritated.
"Well, Violet is Senior president. So she needs to know this because the play may be getting canceled," He says. "And it concerns you, Jayda, because there's a rumor you're the cause of the breakup."
"What?"
"Are you the reason they broke up?" Violet asks, also staring at me. My eyes look at her then over to James, whose eyes are also glued on me, waiting for my answer.
"No. What, I dont even talk to him? They broke up yesterday. He wasn't even here."
"They broke up Wednesday. Neither of them was here yesterday." James says.
Now that I think about it, I didn't see Ashely the other day either. "Well, I don't know. I really don't care. I didn't have anything to do with them breaking up. Who even said that?"
" I don't know, but a lot of people have been thinking it's because of you. I mean, they've been fine all this time now soon as you too have spent a little time together, he ends things with Ashely," he explains, trying to put together the pieces. "Not to mention. In the cafeteria Monday, people saw you leave, and they saw him run after you. Then you both disappear for the rest of the day. It's kind of weird. Not to mention the kiss. You did kiss him."
I didnt kiss him!"
"Look, it's not that big of a deal most people don't know. They're both here, though, so I'm pretty sure people will catch on when they're not in the cafeteria eating each other's faces. But I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. We'll see you at lunch," he says.
He and Violet walk past me out of the bathroom.
Why would he break up with her? I didn't do anything to make him break up with her. I mean, he did say he didn't love her. So maybe he just wanted to break up with her. A heartless person can't love somebody. It was no way they were going to last anyway if only she loved him.
...
"Jayda, can you go pick up some copies I just made off the printer in the office." Mr. Brooks asks me in the hallway.
"Sure." Great now I'll be late to class, and all eyes will be on me when I walk in the classroom. I wonder where everyone will sit, now that in a way, everyone is divided.
I walk down the hall and down the steps to the main office. Ms.Gaspy isn't at the front desk. I need her key card to open the copy room. I walk over to Ms. Moore's office. Her door is closed. I lift my hand to knock. But then I hear something. I press my ear against the door, trying to make out the sound. My eyes widen when I realize what it is. Moaning! It can't be?
I press my ear closer to the door. It is moaning. The desk creeks back and forth. I listen to the moaning and grunts between her and whoever is in that room.
"I love you." Ms.Moore breathlessly says.
"I love you." A man says breathlessly also. It sounds like my science teacher. Oh my god. Mr. Dawsons in there. I hear a slap and back away from the door and look around. I feel embarrassed for some reason. The main office door comes flying open.
"Jayda," Ms.Gatsby says. Her eyes go wide, too; she also looks mortified. Did she leave because she knows what Ms. Moore and Mr. Dawson are doing?
She rushes over to me. You should be in class," she says.
"I know... Mr. Brooks asked me to get copies."
She hurries me out the door "Alright, wait out there,"
I stand outside the main office. After a few minutes, she hands me the paper, and I head back up to class.
Attempting to forget what I just heard.
