Let's Talk: Eating Disorders
In this Let's Talk, I'm going to be talking about the different types of eating disorders, I usually talk about one particular subject in a Let's Talk, but in this one, I am going to be talking about Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating Disorder. I will also be providing some information about how you can get through your eating disorder and get help to treat it. I will also be talking about my experience with an eating disorder.
The first eating disorder I am going to be talking about is Anorexia Nervosa or simply Anorexia. Anorexia is an eating disorder that is characterized by an abnormally low body weight, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted perception of weight. People with anorexia place a high value on controlling their weight and shape. The person who is struggling with anorexia can deal with...
Extreme weight loss
Thin appearance
Abnormal blood counts
Fatigue
Insomnia
Dizziness or fainting
Bluish discoloration of the fingers
Hair that thins, breaks, or falls out
Soft, downy hair covering the body
Amenorrhea (absence of menstruation)
Constipation
Dry or yellowish skin
Intolerance of cold
Irregular heart rhythms
Low blood pressure
Dehydration
Osteoporosis
Swelling of arms or legs
The next eating disorder is Bulimia Nervosa or simply called Bulimia. This eating disorder is when people secretly binge eat on food and then they take a lot of diet pills or laxatives to make themselves throw up the food that they have just binged on. Like Anorexia, this is a serious and potentially life-threatening disorder, people who suffer from Bulimia can suffer from these ailments...
Binge eating
Forceful vomiting
Long-term fear of gaining weight
Preoccupation with weight and body
A strong negative self-image
Overuse of laxatives or diuretics
Use of supplements or herbs for weight loss
Excessive exercises
Stained teeth (from stomach acid)Calluses on the back of the hands
Withdrawal from normal social activities
And the last eating disorder I will be talking about is the Binge Eating Disorder. This eating disorder is when someone eats a large amount of food in a short period of time. People who suffer from this eating disorder can face these struggles...
Symptoms include recurrent episodes of binge eating that lead to feelings of extreme embarrassment
Eating large amounts of food in a short period of time
Feelings of lack of control of the situation
Extreme distress about binge eating
Poor self-image and feeling unhappy about their weight
Eating until one is uncomfortable
Those who suffer from these eating disorders, please know that you are not alone, I know what it feels like to go through something like this, I have struggled with an eating disorder, and there are over 200,000 people who are diagnosed with these eating disorders. There is hope out there for you to get better.
There is a National Eating Disorder Association who can help those who are suffering from these eating disorders, they can also help connect you to local help and support groups who are suffering from the same ailments that you are going through. You can also go to your doctor and they prescribe you different medications that can help you overcome your eating disorder.
Not only do I want to help those who suffer from eating disorders, but I also want to raise awareness and tell my story and tell you how I overcame my disorder, so I can help you get through it as well.
I suffered from a Binge Eating Disorder three years ago, I can remember countless days where would get up in the middle of the night, and binge eat on a lot of food and I would eat until I felt like I was gonna be sick. People would be concerned and asked why I was eating a lot of food, and I would lie to them saying that I didn't eat a lot of food at school or that I simply forgot my lunch.
My family eventually found out about the binge eating, and they helped me get through it through therapy sessions and different medications that helped me stop binge eating. I was also given a balanced diet to eat, some of the things I had to eat were fruits, vegetables, and it was hard for me to not go back to junk food during that time. Now, I have stayed clean, from my eating disorder, I still have to eat a balanced diet, but I occasionally treat myself to a small amount of junk food every once in a while.
To those out there who suffer from an eating disorder, I want you to know that even though it does get better, and with the right help, you can get better and you can live a long and happy life. Never give up, you are strong, and you can get through this!
I believe in you.
