Let's Talk: Depression
In this Let's Talk, I am going to be talking about Depression and how it can affect other people's state of minds. Like I did in my last Let's talk, I am going to be talking about my own struggles with depression. Even though this will not be as triggering as some of the other chapters, I will still put a trigger warning for those who are easily affected by these sensitive topics that can come with depression. With that being said, let's begin...
As somebody who suffers from depression myself, I understand some of the struggles that some people face, But I want you to know that if you have depression, You're not alone. Globally, more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression.
Depression caused by genetic, environmental and psychological factors. Symptoms can include feelings of sadness, low esteem, hopelessness. Psychotherapy and medications can help overcome the condition. But if left untreated, risk of self-harm or suicidal thoughts or actions make major depressive disorder a life-threatening condition.
Depression can be caused by some of the following...
Family history if your family has a history of depression
Early childhood trauma
Some events that can affect the way your body reacts to certain situations
Structure of the brain
Certain medical conditions
Drug abuse, Alcohol abuse.
If you think someone you know has depression here of some symptoms you should look out for...
Persistent feeling of sadness
Tiredness
Irritation
Loss of interest in activities
Sleep disorders (Not sleeping enough, or sleeping too much)
I was diagnosed with depression last year, and for a while I learned to cope with it, there would be some days that I would feel sad, and have these overwhelming emotions, feeling like I was worthless, and that nobody cared about me, but I'm not gonna go into a whole story about it. Now here are some ways that you can cope or help someone else cope with their depression...
Read books (Stories that are happier, not ones that are sad and will make you feel more depressed.
Color in a drawing book
Meditate
Do some yoga
Write in a journal, (pour your heart out and so you can pour out your emotions, This really helped me when I was first diagnosed.)
