Chapter 2
Rio gasped, jerking up and looked around to see her surroundings. It was absolutely strange... but beautiful. She saw burning petals from flowers flying in the wind. It took a while for the petals to turn into ashes but the sight was gorgeous.
Rio got up, afraid but curious. She started to walk around. Although, she was walking in a colorful lake that sparkled after every step she took. Though the water only reached to her ankles, yet she couldn't see the actual ground. Just the water.
It was a living dream. Everything felt so real.
Suddenly, Rio's legs felt strange. As if they were jelly. She could barely get up. Her legs felt weak and numb.
The water, in all of a sudden, rose up. Rio gasped, trying to think of something to do but it felt hopeless. There was nothing around her that seemed helpful but the decreasing amount of air as the water reached up to Rio's chin.
In just the nick of time, the water has completely risen up as to where Rio could no longer swim up. Yet, she tried. But it was difficult with her legs not cooperating accurately.
She lost her breath, giving up and choking from the suddenly dark water that looked like sewage water. It was dark green and grim.
Rio struggled, screaming and feeling the water invade her lungs and especially her entire body. Her eyesight became a blur. A black and blurry frame started closing in on her sight.
Just as Rio was about to only see the color black, a hand peeked out, reaching for her. Rio felt the hand gripping her arm and pulling her out of the water. Though it happened so quickly and she was pulled up.
Rio gasped like she actually lost her breath. She was panting, too. She looked around to see herself to be the only person in bed aside from the other bunkbeds around her in the small room she was in.
Rio got up, dressed and fixed her hair. She washed her face afterward. And for a moment, she stared at her reflection. Her eyes twitching for a second.
"Euh-" Rio rubbed her eyes (eyelids specifically) and blinked. She looked back at the mirror and double checked. Her eyes were back to normal. Rio shrugged and headed out.
She took a step out of the cabin, the bright sunlight blinding her eyes. Just then, she heard a whistle and she turned, seeing a line of ladies gathering in front of another tall woman who had a dark green cap on with sunglasses.
Rio rolled her eyes and walked towards them. She didn't really pay attention to what the tall lady said but dazed off, looking at a bee buzzing around a flower.
"KENNEDY-" a voice screamed. Rio jumped slightly and turned her head towards the voice. She knew it was the tall lady because she was shadowing over her and glared.
Rio could barely see the lady's bright green eyes through those dark shades.
"Are you listening to me, newbie?" She threatened, but Rio stayed calm and smirked.
"To be honest, not really. I was looking at a nice flower that seemed to be rare and blooming under the beautiful sunlight-"
"Enough," The tall woman said, with the line of women looking at Rio and her and curious. "You listen to me, Kennedy. I'm Captain Rose and I demand you to listen closely to every word I say or you'll end up being a wee little lost puppy wandering around and lookin' like a fool."
Rio nodded hesitantly. "Yes, ma'am."
"Good," Capt. Rose walked away from her and looked at the other ladies who jerked back with their backs straight and their heads held high.
Rio rubbed her chin with the back of her hand and scoffed.
"Alright ya ladies, do your work and do your part," again, the tall women commanded as the rest of the women left, leaving Rio standing in the dust. But over at the corner, Taffeta waved at her and gave her a thumbs up for good luck.
"Kennedy," Capt. Rose called, signaling her to come forward. Rio obliged and hesitantly answered. "Yes, Cap?"
"You're working with Alanna. Got it?"
"A-Alanna?" Rio asked.
"FRANCIS!!" Capt. Rose screamed, then a lady with beautiful eyes and gorgeous hair walked up, sweating slightly and looked up at her tall boss. "Yes, madam?"
"Take Kennedy for a tour and get her onto the ropes." She commanded, pushing Rio forward. Somehow, Rio never made eye contact with Alanna. Instead, she was just staring at the ground and dazing off into space.
"Yes, ma'am." Alanna nodded hesitantly just as Capt. Rose left them.
There was a bit of silence. Rio just looked off to somewhere random while Alanna tried figuring out how to catch the other woman's attention.
"Soooo... you're THE Rio Kennedy that Tafetta is talking about almost every day?" Alanna asked, crossing her arms and tilting her head.
"Yep," Rio answered bluntly. Then she glanced at her quickly and looked back at the ground.
"Funny," Alanna replied.
"Funny?" Rio looked back at her again, this time not looking away.
"You're not as majestic as Taff made you out to be." She snickered, chuckling slightly. Then Rio rolled her eyes, deciding to let it slide. She felt her anger issues itching back but somehow she was able to hold it in.
"BUT if you want to prove me wrong, then show me that you can actually do hard work, " Alanna tossed her a broom and started doing her own work, sweeping leaves into a pile.
It has been fall, recently. Leaves fell onto the ground ever slowly and the fresh breezy air could be felt once you step out of home and smell the cozy aroma of autumn.
Rio held the broom and looked at it for a moment, then glancing at Alanna. She was humming a song and nodding her head to the beat.
Rio smirked and decided to sweep as well.
