Hannah couldn't wait to see Cameron again...she hadn't heard from him in a couple of days, so she decided to text him inviting him to that exhibition on Saturday.
Turned out he was out of the State, but would be back on Friday.
Cameron was a busy guy...following in his father's footsteps had to keep him on his toes. Hannah knew from Jen that Mr Tate Senior was quite a workhorse! He probably expected Cameron to keep up with him.
Hannah had this odd feeling...like she wished Cameron would have told her he was going away...but then it occurred to her that they weren't even dating? They had shared one kiss, that was it. That didn't give her the right to track his every move.
Was she falling for Cameron?
Beginning to expect things? Wanting things from him? His time? His affection? See, that's why casual sex is out of the question, no woman can do that and avoid feeling something? And they didn't even have sex...yet. And now she was beginning to think it wasn't such a good idea? What if she ended up getting too attached...she would get hurt. She already felt the need to see him...she caught herself thinking about him a little too often. This was headed in the wrong direction.
That week Jen called her...the girls were getting together for drinks and they wanted to see her. At first she tried to come up with some excuse, but Jen just seemed to ignore Hannah's effort to get out of it...and so they met on thursday at 7 o'clock pm...at the Italian place on Times Square.
Hannah was dreading it.
"I heard some pretty juicy gossip!" Jen said, as they sat around the the table picking at the hors d'oeuvres.
"What?" Taylor asked...they all loved gossip. In High School they could gossip all night about everything and everybody. But Hannah grew out of it...but New York socialites love their gossip, that's for sure...they all married these rich successful men...Jen included...Justin was a successful realtor, and Hannah knew they were living the good life! Not that she ever cared about money...to them she had to seem almost poor, which made her laugh. Money didn't mean anything to her. Hannah's parents were well off, but she never wanted a handout from them...They paid for College, that was it...she took care of the down payment on her appartement by herself, and she was proud of herself she knew her dad respected her way of thinking.
"You know my handsome stepbrother Cameron...he's done a 180...he hasn't been with anyone since the wedding...we are talking about the biggest player in New York..." Jen was smiling.
"You see him a lot?" Reese asked, Reese was the youngest of the group, but the first to have a baby, the little one was with the sitter while Reese was out.
"At family functions...his dad makes him attend...my mom says Tate Senior is hoping Cameron is settling down soon and delivering some grandkids!" Jen laughed.
"He just doesn't seem the type?" Taylor added.
"Everybody can change...look at me!" Jen said...but it was clear both Reese and Taylor saw that comment as inappropriate. So Justin turned Jen into the marrying kind.
Hannah felt so out of place, she just wanted this night to be over...the only positive thing being that Cameron wasn't seeing someone else? Not that he was seeing her per say...but at least there was a possibility that he had some kind of feelings invested in her, right?
Maybe.
"How are you doing?" Taylor asked, and it still felt awkward seeing as they were sitting with the woman, who ruined Hannah's relationship, and everybody tried to pretend that wasn't weird.
"I'm good...work's good..." Hannah said and took a sip of her beer.
"And your love life?" Taylor continued...making Hannah cringe.
Suddenly she was fed up...fed up having to sit here pretending that everything was just fine, great...yeah Jen and Justin had an affair and just got married, and I'm single and miserable...how the f... do you think I am??
Hannah tried to smile, but she couldn't. She thought about what Cameron said...why not try being honest?
"Well after finding out my boyfriend had an affair with my supposed best friend, I really don't feel that good? Would you?" Hannah said, surprised at the words coming out of her mouth.
"Hannah!" Jen tried to stop her..."I thought you got this crap out of your system at the wedding! You embarrassed me and Justin!"
"Like you embarrassed me? Like you hurt me? Am I supposed to just forget about all that shit?" Hannah was mad.
"How many times do I have to apologize? I did that over and over again...I thought you had forgiven me...us...I thought we were fine?" Jen said seemingly upset.
"Well maybe I haven't...maybe I never will...Maybe you and I aren't meant to be friends anymore...I don't think I can...I am tired of pretending everything is fine, when it's not!" Hannah was screaming now.
"Lower your voice please..." Jen said...always so concerned about what other people were thinking. Usually Hannah was too...but not tonight.
"I don't freaking care...I'm leaving. Don't invite me out for drinks anymore...don't invite me to any of your fancy dinners or anything else for that matter...I'm done!"
"You really have some issues!" Jen retorted..."Go see a therapist or something...get over yourself...your man was unhappy, okay?! He wasn't in love with you anymore...you were becoming too boring...so busy with all these dreams of yours...you did this to yourself!"
Hannah shook her head.
"Fuck you Jen...I did this to myself...I cheated on myself?"
"You drove him to do this, don't you get it...you were smothering him!" Jen laughed, and gave her an arrogant glance.
Hannah picked up her beer and poured it on Jen's head, she gave out a loud shriek.
Hannah stormed out of the restaurant and went straight for the nearest cab.
"Wait...Hannah!!" Hannah turned around...it was Taylor.
"I'm coming with you...I'm done too" she said and the two women got into the cab. Hannah looked at Taylor...Taylor smiled and took her hand and squeezed it lightly.
"You should have done this a year ago..." Taylor said, and they both started to laugh.
"Issues...I don't have issues, do I?" Hannah asked Taylor and looked at her.
"Of course you do...after the way they treated you...who wouldn't...Now...let me ask you something...?"
"What?" Hannah said.
"Do you have any booze at your place?" Taylor winked at her.
"Tons!" Hannah said.
"Great!" Taylor said and they spent the next 4 hours drinking and laughing and rekindling their friendship.
That's what you get from being honest.
