Do-Over

"You again?" Hannah said with a sigh, thinking the other day would be the last she'd see of Cameron Tate.

"Hannah...I wanted to apologize for my behavior. I am usually not that disrespectful! I hope you can believe that?" He tried to smile, failing to convince her he was somewhat sincere.

"Well...apology accepted, please excuse me..." she tried to walk past him, avoiding eye contact...those blue eyes...jeeez.

"Wait...Hannah..." he grabbed her arm lightly holding her back, and she stopped climbing the stairs. He was a tall guy, but she was one step ahead of him, making her almost face him eye to eye.

"Cameron...it's okay, really...why do you even care what I think?"

"I'm not sure" he said, looking down and back up, his look somewhat lost.

"We don't even know each other, just walk away...I'm not going to be your next conquest, okay?" Her determination made him loose his grip.

"I just don't want you to think I'm this reckless player, I'm not...well maybe I am, but I don't mean to hurt anybody!"

"It's fine, you do what you do...I get it, you just want to have some fun and that's great, but I just don't want anything to do with you...I don't mean to be rude. I gotta go..." she walked up the stairs, but he followed her and she could feel him standing right behind her, and as she unlocked the door her hands were shaking, she preferred it to be because of the cool air.

"Hannah...just give me a minute, please?"

And she did.

Seeing Cameron sitting by her kitchen table felt kind of surreal. He looked so out of place...

She had a nice place, she felt comfortable here and to some extend she didn't care what Cameron thought, but to him this had to resemble a dorm room!

She had cleaned the place up over the last few months, none of Justin's stuff occupied the space anymore and it was all her, with the bright colors...the floral print and retro chic stuff...

Hannah loved mixing old stuff with new stuff...going to the flea market was like her favorite thing, she couldn't imagine Cameron at a flea market!

"I like your place" he said, and looked around pushing the chair back so he could conveniently have a thorough look around, like he was a realtor assessing the place or something. He looked that out of place.

She threw the bag on the table and he casually looked through it.

"Just sushi...you want some?" She asked, and found some plates in the cupboard by the sink. None of her plates matched and she noticed he smiled as she placed them on the table.

"Drink?" She asked opening the fridge to get herself a ginger beer.

"Just some water" he said.

And there they were...eating sushi in silence.

It felt awkward.

"Cameron, seriously...why are you here?"

"I don't know Hannah...I guess I just wanted to explain myself...leaving my appartement like that, it was pretty clear what you think of me...but I'm not this cold hearted jerk"

"I believe you, I really do...I told you, it doesn't matter what I think, does it?"

"It shouldn't" he said, sounding truthful, adding a smile to that remark.

A guy like Cameron shouldn't care what she thought of him, should he? She figured he wanted to prove something...that he was just toying with her. But why make such an effort?

"I just saw you at that wedding and you just reminded me of myself, I guess..." he smiled.

"That wasn't me, remember? I was wasted...something completely out of character for me...I normally never drink...I was just drowning my sorrows I guess. I am never that honest!" She cringed by the mere thought of that whole wedding ordeal.

"Well...maybe you should be...that honest, I mean. Why not say what you really mean instead of bottling it all up inside. It was so refreshing seeing someone who didn't give a damn about what other people think...." Cameron probably lived like that, being straightforward and honest, but Hannah preferred the sweeping under the rug kind of approach.

"It was a glitch...I am not really like that Cameron and I don't intend to be. Hurting people is not my thing".

"But they hurt you, right?"

"Yes but that doesn't give me the right to hurt them back, does it?" She asked him already knowing what his answer was going to be.

"Of course it does...why let people step all over you?" He wondered.

"I don't...I just don't like conflicts..."

"Or being impulsive" he added, and smiled at her, his sexy little smile didn't do anything for her whatsoever. Things were easy for him, right? Cameron had all the opportunities in the world...he could have any job he wanted, he could have all the women he wanted...he had all the money in the world...he could leave for Hawaii tomorrow if he felt like it, right?

"You and I are so different Cameron...".

"So you can't see us even being friends?" He said.

"No...why do you even need a new friend, you probably have hundreds of friends lining up to cater your every need, right? You probably have a little black book with hundreds of girls's numbers to call, and they'd all be at your beck and call...? Right?" She smiled feeling pretty smug about herself, she had Cam all figured out and she wasn't about to fall for his act. Acting like Mr. sensitive...coming over here to apologize. Why bother?

"Hannah...just give me a do-over...one date with me..." he said extending his hand to her across the table, but she refused to meet his gesture.

"Why? Why Cameron?...I'm not your type at all...".

"How do you know my type?" He asked withdrawing his hand.

"Well I saw you in several magazines with these busty long legged models and in case you didn't notice, I'm short and skinny and pretty deflated!" She laughed, but it sounded fake.

"So you have me all figured out, you don't even want to give me a chance?"

"No...admit it, the only reason why you are here, is because I hurt your precious male ego by turning you down the other day, and now you just want to settle the score, right? You just have to win? You are probably like that in business too...?" She continued to laugh.

"Well congratulations Hannah...you have me all figured out...I am a cold hearted player with a knack for business. I'm spoiled and rich and have no regard for people's feelings...Everything is a game to me and I'm dumb too. I just got lucky...I was born into a rich family...Right, that's what you think of me?"

She nodded.

"Pretty much" she said.

He got up and started to walk towards the door, he turned to face her before opening the front door.

"It's okay Hannah...it's okay that you think I'm the worlds largest asshole. Maybe I am...".

And then he was gone.

His words stuck by her.

Maybe she had been a bit hard on him??

She got up and ran to the door...She ran down the hall onto the street, it was getting dark out...she looked from one side to the other...he was gone. She sat down on the bottom stair as a couple passed her, they were laughing and talking and as they passed her they both smiled at her.

Not like a pity smile...but the kind of smile that shows you have the energy to be kind to other people...giving some stranger a genuine smile. She didn't have that kind of energy right now...She used to be like that.

A year ago she wouldn't have been this rude to Cameron, would she? So someone hurts you, and it gives you the right to hurt someone else?

It really doesn't, does it?

Lashing out.

"Hannah?"

She looked up. It was Cameron.

She got up.

"You came back?" She said.

"What are you doing out here?" He asked.

"I...I was looking for you...I wanted to say sorry...I was being really rude...".

"It's okay...It doesn't matter what I say, everything seems to come out wrong when I try talking to you" he said and smiled.

"That makes two of us then" she said and smiled back at him.

"One date" she said.

And she ran inside, feeling like a teenager. She didn't even wait for his reply. She just ran back upstairs and peeked out the window, and saw him walking by the side of the road, hailing a cab...she kept her eyes locked on him, until she saw him get into the yellow cab.

One date.

One do-over.
