Wouldn't You Like to Know?
"Come on, Addison. It's not even dark. It's not like we're going into a haunted house on Halloween night. We going to check out an abandoned theme park that was abandoned halfway through construction about a year ago, during broad daylight. It's not going to be full of shadows and a total overgrown garden." CeCe reasoned.
"CeCe's right." Logan agreed.
"Plus, I have my pepper spray."
The four teens were walking along the edge of a flimsy metal fence looking for ways into a half-constructed theme park. It was a clear sunny Monday and they were off school, ready for an adventure. Or at least something to fill the day.
"Fat load of help that'll do against a ghost." Murphy joked before spotting something along the fence and bounding ahead.
"Hey, hey, hey! Looky hereee!" Murphy called, lifting up a part of the fence that was perfectly situated above a hole, making it wide enough for all of them to squeeze through.
Once they were on the other side, they just stood there marvelling at the potential the place could've had. And then all sense of calm was thrown to the wind and the four raced from incomplete ride to incomplete ride.
"Hey guys! Get in!" Logan yelled from the roller coaster. It was almost finished and looked like it would've been an amazing ride if they had finished it. The tracks ended at the peak of the roller coaster without going down.
"Logan, honey, I hate to burst your bubble, but the rides don't actually work." Murphy told his boyfriend, jokingly.
"I know that, but we're gonna get in and pretend like they do, because we're broke and can't afford a real roller coaster."
Four 14-year-olds, sitting in a non-workable roller coaster, playing Imagine. They all closed their eyes and swayed back and forth and every now and then one of them would scream, they'd open their eyes and laugh and crack a joke, but after a while, they started to get bored. Logan was the first one to try and get out. Just as he was rising out of his seat, the roller coaster car that they were sitting in began to move.
Logan fell back into his seat next to Murphy and the four looked around in terror. It wasn't supposed to move. It wasn't just a little movement too, it was slowly pulling out of the starting point.
"Uhh, what's happening?" Addison questioned, her eyes wide.
The car was picking up speed and throwing them around as they didn't have the bar down and try as they might, they couldn't get it down. So they just held on and screamed.
In her fear, Addison forgot what was coming until they started their climb to the peak.
"Um, guys?" Addison squeaked out. They were ascending quite slowly compared to the rest of the ride. "I think I remember that the tracks stopped right after you reach the top?"
The other three stared at her in horror. Murphy and Logan wrapped an arm around the other's shoulder, heads rested against each other and closed their eyes. CeCe didn't look like she could move so Addison took her hand and gave her a watery, tearful smile. She gave a weak smile back and closed her eyes.
They hit the top and the view was absolutely beautiful. The blue sky with a few clouds here and there. The buildings were just low enough for them to see over, except for one building rose up and at this time of day, the point of it just pierced the center of the sun. Addison was the only one who's eyes were open to see it.
Then the roller coaster dived downwards and Addison's eyes closed. She felt the car leave the tracks and she felt the free fall sensation before she felt the tracks reappear under the car.
She opened her eyes to find a dark, wooded area. The car jerked to the left, right in front of a gnarled black tree. The car didn't slow down and when Addison glanced down to see where the track went, she couldn't see the tracks. So she did the natural thing.
She screamed. Her scream caused the others to open their eyes and opening their eyes caused them to scream.
The tree loomed closer, and a split second before impact the car swerved away and came to a stop. The group kept screaming until their voices were hoarse and their eyes were dry and red.
Taking deep breaths, Addison stumbled out and away from the car and sat on a pat of dry brown grass some ways off. The others followed suit, trying to put some space between them and the roller coaster car.
They collapsed in a circle on the ground, hugging each other silently and ignoring the fact that they're in a dark forest.
Eventually, they pulled apart and had to acknowledge the gloomy scenery.
"Where...are we?" CeCe whispered. Addison could see how pale her face was in the...moonlight. Moonlight? It was 4 in the afternoon!
"Wouldn't you like to know?" Logan gasped out, sarcastically.
"I think we need to acknowledge a whole bunch of stuff. I made a mental list." Murphy said, his voice breathy. "A) We were on a non-workable roller coaster and it started working. B) We fell to our deaths and suddenly we ended up in a forest, heading straight for a tree, without rails under us. Not to mention that it swerved without tracks. And C) It's the middle of the night. We left for the park at around 2.30. It should only be around 4 or 5."
That pretty much summed up Addison's thoughts on the matter as well.
"So that leaves three possibilities. Three main ones, anyway. A) Time travel, B) Other side of the world because that would explain the whole middle-of-the-night thing, and C) We ain't on Earth no more." Logan said, rocking back and forth.
"I've never seen these woods before, so one thing's for sure. I don't think we're in Kansas anymore." Murphy finished, gently rubbing circles on Logan's back.
"My watch still says 4.30pm." CeCe's voice was small and barely audible but in the dead silence of the forest it was like a thundercrack.
The group just sat their for a moment. "So. what do we do? What can we do? Do we try to make it out of this forest? Do we get back into the cart? Do we just stay here and starve?" Addison listed off options, her voice breaking with every one.
Addison watched their minds turn as they processed the options she just listed. They obviously rushed to assure her this was not the case, but they clearly didn't believe themselves.
Murphy took charge, being the most logical one. "OK, so those might actually be our only options. Anyone got any others?"
Everyone shook their heads, although Addison was sure it was just because they were too shaken to think.
"Then, if we cancel out stay here and starve, that leaves us with try the cart again and try to make it out of the forest. Let's think pros and cons starting with make it out of the forest. Pros, we have a chance at not starving. We have a chance at reaching a civilisation, or not. Both are equally likely. Actually, I'm sorry, I can't sugarcoat it." Murphy sighed, running a hand through his brown hair. "There's an extremely slim chance we make it to civilisation, and we don't even know what country we're in. We could be in flipping Ethiopia for all we know."
Logan stopped rocking for a moment to lean over and whisper something in Murphy's ear. Addison watched as Murphy took three breaths and continued. "Pros, we possibly make it out and find food and shelter, maybe even a phone, and we figure out where we are. Cons..." He took another deep breath. "...it's a slim chance of happening."
"We should get back in the cart."
Everyone once again turned towards CeCe, given she hadn't said more than 3 sentences since they ended up in this forest.
She looked blankly at them. "We have two options, one of which we can test quickly. If it's wrong, we can rule it out within seconds. If it's right, it could get us home."
Murphy nodded. "She's right. We should do this first before attempting the stumble around blindly option. We basically have nothing to lose."
Except my last bit of sanity and last remaining braincell. Addison thought, almost laughing manically.
So they all pulled themselves to their feet, Logan and Murphy leaning heavily on each other. CeCe stepped a little bit away from the rest of the group and curled her arms around herself.
Addison didn't really know what to do with herself, so she just concentrated on the cart and putting one foot in front of the other.
They all climbed in slowly, into the exact same spot they had been in when they had first ended up in this godforsaken forest.
They all took a deep breath and closed their eyes. They sat there in silence for a couple of minutes before Murphy stood up shakily and sarcastically declared, "I think we can now rule out get back into the cart, so who's up for stumbling around a dark forest blindly?"
As he was about to step out of the cart, it began to move again, forcing Murphy to take a seat again, just like what happened to Logan when they first got on.
The four closed their eyes, hoping for the best, yet not expecting it. This is not to say it was a peaceful ride. The cart tossed them from side to side, sometimes so violently Addison worried they were going to be thrown out. But their eyes remained closed and the violent rocking turned more and more into a lull until it stopped entirely.
Addison peeled her eyes open to see Logan and Murphy climbing out of the cart, laughing and gently shoving each other.
"Uh guys?" Addison's voice was croaking but audible. "Aren't we going to talk about what happened?"
The boys looked around confused. "What...happened?" Logan asked, laughing slightly.
Addison was at a loss for words. She must've zoned out, had a mini day-mare. She quickly covered her previous question. "The...best fake roller coaster ride ever!"
She and CeCe stepped out together and as the boys ran to the next station, CeCe whispered in her ear.
"I remember."
