34. Vampires & Humans Just Don't Mix

                                                                      ***Damon***

"She's dead, Damon. You have to accept that." Stefan said for the millionth time that minute. I lifted my head up, glared at him, and then shook my head.

"Shut up." I snapped. "You don't understand...she had my blood. She'll come back..."

"As a vampire?"

"No. A frigging unicorn." I said. "Yes, Stefan, a vampire. What else could it be?"

"Sorry." He said.

I looked at Nina's body, cradled in my arms. Her head lay against my chest and her legs slumped half on my knees and half on the floor. Her eyes were closed, and there was a gash on the left side of her head. Bleeding. Tempting Me.

But I couldn't.

Anyway, that was one part of my thoughts.

The other part? My other thoughts were focussed on killing Stefan. Kissing my girlfriend? Didn't he know better than that? Even if the frigging kid had saved my life, it didn't give him the right.

"She wouldn't do that."

"What?" Stefan asked.

"Nina. She wouldn't kiss you." I said. Stefan closed his eyes, sighed and then looked at me.

"You saw it."

"No I didn't." I hissed. "I saw you and Nina in some full on lip action. Her hands were on your chest, like she was trying to push you off. I didn't think about it at the time, but now it's pretty clear. You're on human blood, and you've just made me fucking kill my girlfriend."

Stefan sighed, but didn't deny. "Catch on well, don't you?"

"Get out of here before I rip your heart out." I threatened.

"Gladly."

With that, he was gone.

For a while, I sat there and thought. What was I going to do? I'd just killed my girlfriend, and her friends and family were going to come back any minute.

Think of her as someone else, Damon. A voice told me. What would you do if this was just some random girl that you thought tasted nice?

I'd stake her before she could go into transition, and then I'd bury the body.

So as much as I hated the idea, I picked Nina up in my arms and then ran to the balcony. I jumped onto the ground and ran, just ran without stopping.

I must have been running for about 5 minutes before I got to Mystic Falls. I stopped when I got to Fells Church, and then I gently placed Nina on the ground, careful not to make eye contact with her body.

I went over to the church, and then grabbed the shovel that I'd used when me and Stefan were digging up the entrance to the tomb.

And then I started digging.

About 5 minutes later, I had a perfectly good space to put the body in. I know it sounds horrible, but what else was I supposed to do? This is what I'd do if it was any other girl.

But Nina wasn't any other girl.

That's why it made it so hard.

I walked over to Nina and whilst hating myself entirely, I picked her body up. I wandered over to the hole in the ground and then slowly placed her down inside.

I didn't even bother to say goodbye or anything like that. I couldn't deal with it. So I just picked up the shovel, and then threw some dirt onto her. I kept doing this, until Nina's legs were completely covered. Then, I grabbed the closest stick that I could find and snapped half of it off so it was more or less like a stake.

It was horrible. But Nina couldn't become a vampire. She just couldn't.

I leant down and then placed the stake on her heart, closing my eyes.

"I love you, NIna."

Then, as I was about to shove the stake into her heart. Something happened.

Her eyes shot open and she gasped for air.

"Damon?!" She shrieked, eyes terrified. "Damon...what...what are you doing?"

Her eyes wandered to the stake I held, and she froze. "Damon...Damon please get off me."

I didn't want to, but I moved back, throwing the stake away. Nina brushed the dirt off her legs and then stood up, stumbling a little. She looked as if she were going to fall back, so I quickly took hold of her waist.

"Get off me."

I did, shrinking back.

"I'm...I-"

"What the hell happened?" She demanded.

I pursed my lips. "What do you remember?"

"I remember getting drunk with Stefan, and then he kissed me and I tried to get him off. And then you came in, and Stefan said that I kissed him which I didn't. Then you got angry and...and-"

"Killed you."

"Why the hell did you do that?!"

"I'm sorry!" I snapped. "You know my temper, you know I can't control it. Even with you. Believe it or not Nina, but just because I love you doesn't mean that my temper does. If I get pissed off like that then no one's safe. Don't think you're an acception to that."

"I don't!" She cried. "But I told you that I didn't and you still-"

"I was mad!"

"And what about this, huh?" She asked, gesturing to the hole in the ground. "You were going to stake me and then bury my body? What the hell were you going to tell Elena? Jeremy? My friends? My parents, for god sake! What the hell were you-"

"I thought I was doing the right thing!" I shouted. "Nina, you're only 16! You can't become a vampire! I knew you didn't want to, so I was giving you the easy way out."

"Oh my God..." She whispered. "Am I...am I a-"

"You're in transition."

"So that means that if-"

"If you drink human blood then you're a vampire." I explained. She nodded, shaking, and then ran a hand through her hair.

"How do you feel?" I asked.

"Normal." She said.

I frowned. "Stop lying."

"I'm not."

"So you don't feel the urge to kill? To drink blood? Can't you smell the blood bag that I have in my pocket? There's no itch in your throat? No pounding in your head?"

She shurgged. "There really isn't."

Angry that she was lying, I grabbed Nina by the shoulders and then looked into her eyes. I placed my hand on her heart, and was merely surprised.

"You're heart...it's beating."

"But I thought that vampires hearts didn't beat?"

"They don't." I replied. "You're dead, it's not supposed to be beating."

"Maybe I'm not dead?" She suggested.

I scoffed. "Nina, that's impossible. I killed you."

"So why is my heart beating?"

"I don't know!"

I fell quiet, and then got an idea. There was only one way to make sure if she was alive or dead. I reached into the pocket of my leather jacket and then I pulled out the small blood bag. I tore it open and then before Nina could question, I shoved it into her mouth, pressing down so the blood came out.

I threw it away, and then looked into her eyes.

"Damon what-"

"Not possible." I said.

"What?"

"You're alive. Human. You weren't even in transition. You probably didn't even die."

"Explain." She ordered.

I thought hard, and then finally came up with an explanation.

"You had my blood in your system when I pushed you. You didn't hit your head hard enough to die, so my blood healed you instead."

"And you never thought to check if I actually was dead?!"

"I panicked!"

"Screw you Damon." She hissed. "Where are we? Fells Church?"

"Yes."

"My house isn't too far away from here. I'm going home." She said, pulling herself out of my arms and turning her back on me.

I followed. "Nina, just let me-"

"If you really loved me then you would have done anything to keep me alive!" She snapped. "Even if that did mean being a vampire!"

"Nina-"

"You know, I can see why Katherine picked Stefan."

"I'm not a monster!" I shouted.

"You are to me."

                                                                     ***Nina***

Damon didn't follow and I was glad. I headed out of the woods and then took my phone out of my pocket, scrolling down on my contacts.

I pressed dial, and hesitated.

"Hello?"

"Mom?" I cried.

"Nina! How's vacation with your friends?"

"It's...It's fine." I said, shaking with each word. "I'm actually back now. I was wondering if you could come pick me up? I'm just outside Mystic Grill."

"Of course, honey! I'll be there in 5 minutes!"

"Thanks. I love you."

I hung up the phone and let the tears fall out of my eyes. Some were for Damon, some for my Mother, and some because I honestly thought I was going to have a life with the Salvatores. I was heartbroken.

And I hated it.

In a few minutes, a black Chevy skidded around me.

Mentally smiling, I climbed into the passenger seat.

"Mom." I cried, reaching over to hug the brown haired women next to me. SHe hugged me back and chuckled into my ear.

"Never thought you'd miss me."

"I did." I promised. "I missed you and Dad so much."

"Aw, honey. Are you crying?"

I pulled away and nodded. "Yeah."

"Wanna talk about it?"

"When we get home."

"Ok."

Mom started driving and I huddled my knees up to my chest. I tried to keep my tears in, not wanting to worry my Mom. But they just flooded out.

I'd loved Damon, and still did. But after what he'd just done?

Me and him were completely finished.

Vampires and humans just didn't mix.
