28. Love Sucks
Dear Diary,
A lot has changed in 2 weeks. 2 weeks ago, my sister attacked me. 2 weeks ago, I decided who I wanted to be with. 2 weeks ago, I found out who my Father was. 2 weeks ago, we had 14 days left before the night of the full moon.
14 days later, things are turning worse. So much worse, that I've even stopped using my stupid sarcastic comments and random sentences.
Damon's getting weaker. He really needs Klaus's blood, which is fine because he's going to have it this time tomorrow. He still has no idea about Stefan's deal with Klaus, and I'm glad. I know how much he loves his brother, no matter how hard he tries to hide it, he wouldn't want anything to happen to Stefan.
I haven't spoken to Elena, I haven't even seen her. I don't want to either. My head feels a lot better, and my cast got so annoying that I went back to the hospital and demanded I get something a lot lighter. My arm had already healed quite quicker, so they let me wear a bandage instead.
We still haven't found Caroline, or Tyler. Even Damon's starting to get worried as he's finally realizing the seriousness of this situation.
I'm drinking Damon's blood today. I decided not to drink Elijah's, and Damon fully agreed with my decision.
Miss Mystic Falls is on today. Sheriff Forbes, Caroline's Mom is searching for her daughter hysterically. She's asked the judges to make an announcement about it, asking if anybody knows anything about Caroline's whereabouts, to come forward.
Bonnie was supposed to fill in for Caroline, but refused to as she was against the idea. So guess what, diary? Damon told Sherriff Forbes that I would take her place, all because he wanted to see me in a tight dress. I don't care though, I mean, I'll have to see Elena but I'll get on with it. Anyways, Damon's my escort so he'll keep me safe.
I'm so confused, diary. Nothing seems to go right anymore. I think I'm falling in love with Damon, I think I'm going to make the wrong decisions in my new life as a vampire, and I think that lives are going to be lost tonight.
Dear Diary,
Love Sucks.
I closed my diary and looked in the mirror of the dressing room. My hair was curled perfectly and ended at my elbows, my makeup was effortlessly applied and my dress was a strapless blue.
From the mirror, I saw Damon enter and walk up to me. He looked amazing. His black hair was it's usual windblown, his body perfectly toned even behind the black tux he wore, and his eyes the compelling icy blue as always.
He wrapped his arms around my waist and rested his chin on my shoulder.
"You ready?"
I nodded, taking a deep breath. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm ready."
"Come on, then." He whispered, taking my hand. He helped me stand up, and then placed my diary in my bag. He wrapped an arm around my waist, and we walked out of the dressing room together. Once we got to the staircase, I saw Elena and she returned my gaze.
She looked beautiful, and wore a thin strapped red dress. Her hair was tied up in a high pony tail, and she had dark red lip stick on.
"You gonna be alright?" Damon asked me.
I nodded. "Yeah, I'll be fine."
He kissed my cheek and smiled. "See you in 5."
"Bye."
Damon walked down the stairs and got in line with the other escorts who were in alphabetical order, so of course Damon was next to Stefan. And since the girls were also lined in alphabetical order, I was next to Elena.
I turned to face her. "Are we ever going to talk about what happened?"
She frowned. "I have nothing to talk about."
"Yes you do Elena." I corrected her. "You broke my arm and I pushed me so that I needed to get stitches in my head. You've never been like that before, and it's obvious that something was bothering you to make you do that. You need to tell me."
"Why?" She asked. "You don't care. Why would you after what I did?"
"Because I'm your sister and I hold nothing against you." I promised. I placed my hand on Elena's and forced a little smile. "What's wrong Elena?"
"I don't want to talk about it." She refused.
"Why not?"
"Because I didn't wear my waterproof mascara." She explained, gesturing to her watering eyes. I took in a deep breath and gave her a hug.
"Is it something really bad?"
"I'm so scared Nina." She admitted, her voice breaking. "I am so sorry for what I did to you...but I was so angry. I am so angry all the time and..."
"Why are you so angry?" I asked.
"Next up is Elena Gilbert, escorted by one of the towns founding family members, Stefan Salvatore." Mrs Lockwood announced, completely killing the moment.
Elena took a deep breath and smiled nervously. "I can't tell you. I'm so sorry Nina."
She then let go of my hand, and turned her back to me, making her way over to the stairs and effortlessl walking down with a beautiful though fake smile on her face.
"And last but most certainly not least, following in her sisters footsteps, Miss Nina Gilbert escorted by Damon Salvatore."
The same as Elena, I forced on a smile and carefully made my way down the stairs, watching as the many eyes fluttered in my direction.
Damon stepped out from the side, and smiled gently with his 'killer curvy' mouth. That's where my fake smile left, and a real one appeared. I took Damon's icy hand which he held out, and then began walking in the direction of the Founder's Court.
"You were talking to Elena." He whispered as we walked into our space in the middle. He spun me around to face him, and I nodded.
"Something's wrong with her." I said.
"We'll find out, don't worry."
At that very moment, the song 'All I Need' began playing and I readied myself for the dance. Stefan had taught it to me a few days before, and even though my arm was still aching, I managed it perfectly well.
I lifted up my right hand, as did Damon and we (without touching) circled around each other at an intensified slow pace. Once around, and then the same again with my left hand. Then, with both hands.
Eventually, Damon placed one steady hand on my waist and the other was inetertwined between mine. I placed my good hand on his shoulder, and with as the song let out 'Don't Tear Me Down', we began the waltz.
I couldn't take my eyes off Damon, as he portrayed the same distraction. It just felt so perfect, being with him, not caring about anything or anyone else at that moment. Just us.
Me and Damon.
Together.
Words couldn't describe how much I wanted it. And I knew for a fact, that Damon did too.
The song was finally coming to an end, not that I wanted it to, and the big steps that we were taking for the waltz evolved into little paces. Though it was not a part of the routine, Damon tightened his arm around my waist and spread it around my back so that he could easily pull me up against his chest.
I dropped my hand from his shoulder and instead, placed it firmly on his waist, not wanting to move it too much because of the ache coming from it.
"Damon..." I whispered, his face coming closer to my own.
"Don't." He murmured, voice barely a murmur. "Just go with it, please don't say anything."
So I didn't. And I let it happen.
I allowed Damon's lips to press against mine. It wasn't like I imagined it, not rough and playful. Instead it was firm, gentle, and passionate. Like you would imagine Stefan to kiss Elena. I wasn't thinking about that though, I wasn't thinking about anyone else.
Just me and Damon.
In our own perfect world.
"No." I whispered, as Damon moved his lips away from mine. It sounded desperate, but I didn't care.
"Come on." He murmured, cocking his head to the side. He slid his fingers through my own, and without caring about the competition at the slightest, we made our way past the audience and back towards the stairs.
"Go." Damon instructed, lightly pushing on my back so that I stepped onto the stairs. I began walking up them, feeling Damon right behind me and once we got to the top, Damon pressed his lips against my ear.
"Your dressing room." He whispered.
Nodding, I made my way towards the room and quickly opened the door. Damon closed it behind me, and once he did, he used his immortal speed to press my back against the door. His hand placed on my shoulder, and the other on the side of my face. Then without question, he pushed his lips against mine.
That was all I needed.
And I'd wanted to do it for so long.
"Nina." Damon moaned against my skin. I brought my hands up to his black jacket and then quickly slid it off, revealing the white cotton shirt he had on underneath. Once the jacket fell to the floor, Damon quickly put his hands around my waist and pulled me up, making me wrap my legs around his own.
Damon led me over to the couch and carefully lay me down on it, getting on himself and putting his knees at either side of me. He then moved himself so that he was comfortable, and then traced his lips against my shoulder blade, moving up so that he eventually found and focussed on my neck.
I didn't even care that he might bite me.
"My blood." He murmured, lips still against me. "My blood, take it now. Take it."
I nodded, and then watched as Damon rolled up his sleeve and bit deep into his wrist. It looked painful, but he didn't flinch.
Instead, only brought his wrist to my mouth where I took it in my own hands. And then I let the blood enter inside of me. It didn't really taste of anything, just kind of like rust if that made any sense. But I continued to gulp down the liquid, and eventually Damon pulled his wrist away.
"Easy tiger." He smirked. "Leave me some."
"Sorry." I said. "Do you need some wolfsbane or...?"
"No, no." He assured me. "I'm fine. In fact, I'm amazing."
"I know." I said, allowing myself to smile. "I know."
Damon moved to push his lips in my direction once again, but the door opened.
"Guys we need to go." Stefan said, stepping into the room.
"Can't it wait, little brother?"
"No." He replied. "Unless you want to let Klaus win. Have you taken Damon's blood?"
"Yes." I said, sitting up. "Where's Elena?"
"With Jenna." He said. "Now we really need to go."
"Ok." Damon said, grabbing my hand and hoisting me up to my feet. He pulled me along behind Stefan, and once we got outside, opened the car door for me so that I could get into the backseat. The brothers sat in front.
"What exactly are we doing?" I asked.
"Going back to the boarding house." Stefan explained as he sped up to about 100 mph. "We're going to get you in the house with Damon, lock all the doors-"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa." I said. "Hang on a minute. That isn't Elijah's plan!"
"Well I don't trust Elijah." Damon shrugged. "If we put up a fight then-"
"Then Klaus will kill you!" I exclaimed. "Damon, I'm gonna be safe! I have your blood in my system! I'll be fine!"
"Your life is too valuable to gamble on." Damon snapped. "You might think I'm being selfish, but I'm not. I'm doing this for your own good. Think about it : do you really want to be a vampire?"
"No but-"
"There you go." Damon said. "We're doing it this way. End of."
I wasn't happy with the plan, but I decided to go along with it and keep quiet. Once Stefan parked the car in front of the house, it was just starting to get dark and then sun was more or less down. Damon opened the door for me and took my hand as I stepped out.
"Can I go change?" I asked. I knew it was an appropriate time, but I didn't want to be running around in a tight dress for the rest of the night.
Damon nodded. "Be quick."
With my mind working rapidly, I raced upstairs to my room and picked out a pair of loose jeans and red shirt. I didn't bother about anything else, and just flipped off my expensive shoes, jumped into my converses and sprinted back down.
Stefan and Damon were standing near the door, talking quietly.
But suddenly, there was a bang. "What was that?"
"Stay here." Stefan ordered. Really? Did he expect me to just step aside? Well, I wouldn't. So I hurried down the last few steps and outside the door to the brothers. Only, they weren't alone as Klaus was standing there.
"Nina, what happened to coming without struggle?" He asked, the same smirk on his face that never seemed to leave.
"Nothing." I lied. "I said I'd come and I will."
"You sure as hell wont!" Damon snapped, grabbing my wrist and pulling me close to him.
"No, Damon. We've already made this decision. You know what we're going to do, and we're going to do it. It doesn't matter if I don't like the consequences. This is what we're doing."
"But I love you." He murmured, taking my face in his hands.
I looked into his compelling, ice blue eyes. "I love you too...but I have to do this. You have to trust me."
"I don't wanna lose you." He whimpered, wrapping an arm around my waist and keeping me close to his chest.
"You wont." I promised. "Damon, you never will."
"But-"
"No." I said, pressing a finger to his lips. "Close your eyes."
"What?"
"Shh." I murmured. "Just close your eyes."
With that, Damon closed his eyes and I lightly brought my lips to his own; pressing them to his so gently that it felt nothing more than feather light. As I slowly pulled away, I whispered. "I love you."
Without another word, I untangled myself from Damon's hold and smiled towards Stefan. He nodded, and then I turned to Klaus who had his hand held out. Despising the idea, I took his hand and was pulled in close to his chest.
"I love you too." Damon said, still eyes closed.
Klaus wrapped an arm around my waist. "He really does." He whispered, right before he took off running.
My eyes were still closed the whole time, and I held my breath as we ran. Though it only lasted for 30 seconds at least, I still didn't like the idea of running too much.
"Here." Klaus declared, letting go of me. I opened my eyes and was quite surpsised to see that we were in what seemed like just an ordinary field. The only problem was, was that Caroline and Tyler were both standing in the same circle that I was.
"Caroline!" I cried, attempting to run towards her. I was immediatley cut off though as fire surrounded all of us, making it impossible to get to each other. At first I was wondering how that happened, but then I saw a young women standing near Klaus; so I guessed she was a witch.
"Nina he's gonna kill us!" She exclaimed. "There's nothing we can do, we're dead."
"No, we'll find a way out. I promise."
She nodded, and I looked over to Tyler. "Tyler..."
"Good to see you." He nodded, his voice shaky. "Under circumstances..."
"Are you ok?" I asked.
"Apart from this...yes."
"The moon will be rising in approximatley 30 minutes." Klaus said, leaning back against a tree. "That gives you all enough time to discuss whatever little, meaningless, unimportant things that you wish to."
Me, Tyler and Caroline all looked at each other, all thinking the same things.
There was no way to escape this.
***Damon's P.O.V***
Elijah faced me and Stefan, and he knew exactly what I was thinking. If his little plan didn't work, then I wouldn't hesitate in killing him.
We weren't the only ones in the room though, no. John Gilbert, had to be standing in the corner with the witch girl and her boyfriend. I had nothing against the kids, they were helping us. But Mr. Gilbert? Him I couldn't stand.
"What the hell do you want Gilbert?" I demanded.
"To make a suggestion." He replied, walking forwards. Holding in the urge to snap his neck, I shook my head.
"No. Now leave."
"Listen to him Damon." The witch pleaded. "He told me his idea, and I really think it could work." I wasn't going to listen, but then the boy, Jeremy caught my attention.
"It's about Nina."
My attention spam increased and I raised an eye-brow. "You got 30 seconds."
"Bonnie can do a spell, which allows me to sacrifice my life in order to save Nina's. It means that she'll go back to a perfectly human life. The vampire blood will have no affect and she wont go into the process of transformation."
"Finally, the man says something useful." I said, clapping my hands. I looked at Bonnie. "Do it now."
"Sit down." Bonnie instructed, pulling out a little stool. The man sat down and Bonnie immediatley began saying some foreign witch spells.
"That's her Father." Stefan whispered to me.
"I don't care." I snapped. "Besides, she'll be greatful. She doesn't want to be a vampire."
"But-"
"Shut up, little brother."
"That's it." The witch said, looking at John. "How do you feel?"
"No different." He shrugged. "But did it work?"
"Of course it worked." Bonnie said. "So, you're aware that when Nina dies, then wakes up, you'll die about a minute after?"
"I'm aware." He said.
"Ok." I sighed. "Thankyou, John. Now, Elijah, what do we do?"
"Well, Damon of course you are going to go to Klaus so that as soon as he kills Nina, you can take her back here. And that's mainly it."
"When does the moon rise?" Stefan asked.
Elijah looked at his watch. "Right about...now. You should go."
"What about you?" I asked. "What's your position in this?"
"Well, my part is mainly next month where I kill Klaus during his transformation into a wolf." He replied. I nodded, and pulled off my tie, then unbuttoned the first 3 buttons of my cotton white shirt.
"I'll be off then." I sighed. I was about to leave the house, but then Stefan grabbed my arm. "What is it now, Stefan?"
"I just wanted to say...that everything's gonna work out. And I'm sorry if I don't seem supportive in yours and Nina's...decision. But I really do care about you both."
Stefan, let go of my wrist and I squintet my eyes at him, something which Nina liked me to do. "Why are you talking like that?"
"What?"
"Don't act like you don't know, brother." I said. "You're talking like you're never going to see me again. Lighten up, would you?"
"Alright. Yeah, I'm sorry." He said, gently hitting my back. "Go on, go get your girl."
"Bye brother." I murmured, walking away.
Once I picked up Nina's scent, I let my instincts lead me to where she was. And adrenaline was a big part of it as well. Because I loved Nina, and after all of this was over, I would never let anything happen to her again.
***Nina's POV***
The moon was up and me, Tyler and Caroline had fallen silent. Turns out the witch was a girl named Greta, and she worked for Klaus simply because she wanted immortality. She was now speaking in a foreign language of some sort, and readying Klaus for the deed.
"We're gonna die." Tyler said, starting to shake. Not out of fear though, out of anger. "We're gonna die for a completely pointless reason!"
"Calm down Tyler!" Caroline begged.
"Don't tell me to calm down, blondie!" He snapped. "If I wanna freak out because I'm just about to die, then I can do that. Unlike you who seems to want to greet death with hugs and open arms."
"Tyler, just stop it!"
"Both of you stop it!" I cried. "Look I know this is bad, but don't turn against each other. And don't give up so easily! Put up a fight! Anything! Just don't give up!"
"Like that will help." Klaus scoffed, walking towards the circle of fire we were trapped in. Greta, said something once again and then in an instant, the fire surrounding Tyler faded.
"Tyler..." I whispered. "Get out of here."
"I can do this." He murmured to himself. And that's where he took off running, and I thought that he could really make it out this place. That's where I was wrong though, because Klaus was a lot faster than Tyler could ever be.
And Klaus pushed Tyler to the floor, holding him down harshly.
"Tyler!" I screamed. But my screaming couldn't help anyone, and though I wanted to, I couldn't make myself look away. And my subconscious forced me to keep looking whilst Klaus effortlessly shoved his hand through Tyler's chest, and literally ripped his heart out.
"No!" Caroline shouted, crying hysterically. "No! Tyler!"
"No point in screaming." Klaus said, wiping his blood-stained hands on his shirt. "Well, you can if you want to make your death more dramatic."
"What?" Caroline stuttered.
"You're next." He said, shrugging.
And that's when the fire surrounding Caroline burnt out. She turned to face me, letting out more tears but then she smiled.
"It's okay, I know what I have to do." She said, her smile too nervous to be believable. "It's ok Nina, honest."
That's where she launched at Greta and sunk her ivory teeth into her neck. Greta didn't lose her concentration though, and instead, Klaus managed to get to Caroline and shove her to the ground. She let out a whimper and focussed her eyes on me whilst crying hysterically.
"Turn off the pain." I whispered, crying myself. "Just shut it out like Damon used to. You don't have to feel it, you don't have to."
Between whimpers and cries, Caroline forced out. "Tell Matt I never stopped loving him."
And as I nodded, Klaus shoved a stake into Caroline.
Killing her. Like Tyler, and like what was intended for me.
Only, there was a difference. I was going to come back, they never would.
As the fire around me dissppeared, I just stood there, not giving up but not fighting back either. Klaus walked over to me, and smiled as he placed his arm around my waist, pulling me close to him. He turned me around so that I had my back leant against his chest and then he tilted my neck.
"I thought there was something about my blood..." I said, reminding Klaus on what he'd said 2 weeks ago when I was at his apartment.
"Yes." He murmured.
"What's wrong with it?"
Klaus pressed his lips against my neck. "You don't need to know."
"Nina?!"
Me and Klaus both looked up to the other side of the field and I mentally sighed with both frustration and relief. Damon. He looked so desperate, standing there in loose black trousers and unbuttoned white shirt, that look of saddness in his eyes.
"I love you Damon." I whispered.
That's where Klaus sunk his teeth into my neck. I couldn't hear if Damon said anything or not, because I just kind of faded out almost instantly. As if I didn't want to take in any more of my surroundings. I just let myself leave my body, as Klaus drunk more and more from me.
"Nina." I heard Damon's voice whisper.
I realized that I was now lying on the ground, looking up at Damon with a blurred vision. I felt him kneal down next to me, but that was it.
Everything faded to black.
***Damon's POV***
I ran through the woods with Nina in my arms. She wasn't breathing, but that was expected. She was dead after all. I finally reached the boarding house and rushed inside to the living room where Bonnie, Jeremy, John and Elena stood. I wondered where Stefan was, but then dropped it. They all stared in horror, but what were they suspecting? Nina to be dancing around like she'd just won World War 3?
I lay her down on the couch, knealing at her body, stroking her face.
I tried not to think about Elena hurting Nina the other week. I'd heard the conversation they'd had earlier, something was wrong with Elena and we'd find out soon. But right now, Nina was what mattered.
"How long?" I demanded.
"Maybe a few minutes." Bonnie replied. "It's hard to say. Did Klaus change?"
"He's in transformation at the minute. I came back before I could see." I replied. "It's been about 5 minutes since she died, why isn't she waking up?!"
"Damon, calm down." Bonnie murmured. "Any time now, I promise."
"Where's Stefan?" I asked.
"Gone to get the cure." Elena explained. "He should be back soon."
That moment, I heard something. A heart beat, Nina's heart beat. I quickly placed my hand at the side of her face and felt the softness of her skin.
I know what you're thinking. Damon Salvatore, he's tough, not a softie. But guess what? Nina brings out a side of me that makes me feel, the real me.
Her eyes slowly opened, and I heard John stand up behind me and open the door. He obviously was walking out because he didn't want his daughters to see him die. I didn't care about that though, just Nina.
"Angel." I soothed, without question bringing my lips in to touch hers. She smiled gently, but her eyes said it was fake. She was terrified. She'd just watched her friends die.
"Damon." She whispered, voice shaking. "Am I a...?"
"No. You don't need to be." I promised her. "But we'll talk about that later, ok? Just lay low for a little bit."
"He killed Caroline and Tyler and I..."
"I know, I know." I murmured, placing my hand under Nina's back and gently lifting her up. I quickly sat behind her and then rested her head back down on my chest. No one else said anything, and I was grateful.
"I couldn't do anything to help." She whimpered into my chest.
I softly kissed her healed neck. "It's gonna be ok, Nina. I promise."
"Katherine?" Jeremy asked, gaining my attention. Nina continued to cry into my shirt, and I snapped my head up, staring at the bitch.
"What?" I demanded.
She held out a small tube of blood? "Klaus realized that he can change whenever he wants, so he didn't have to wait for the sun to come up in order to be a vampire again. So as soon as he turned back, he came back to the appartment and told me to give you this. It's his blood. The cure."
She quickly tossed it to me and I grabbed it. "What's the catch?"
"Don't you know?"
"Why else would I ask?" I snapped.
"Well, Stefan handed himself over to Klaus in order to get you the cure." She shrugged. "I thought you knew."
That hurt. People assumed me and Stefan hated each other, but that wasn't the case. I cared about him so much. He was my little brother after all. So finding out that he'd done that, it really hurt. But I couldn't do anything, at least not at the moment. First I had to make sure Nina was ok.
"Where are they going?" I asked.
"No idea." Katherine said. "But that's your problem."
WIthout another word, she was off.
"Nina?" I whispered, stroking to her hair. She slowly lifted her head up and looked at me with her dark brown eyes. "Everything's gonna be ok. It's all gonna be fine."
"Damon?" She asked.
"Yeah?"
"I'm sorry about Stefan."
***Stefan's POV***
'Go kill Katherine. Kill katherine. Rip her little heart out.' Klaus's words echoed through my head as I ran through the woods, following my instincts as I traced Katherine's scent. She was running through the trees, thinking this was all a game. It wasn't though.
And whilst I was drinking human blood, I didn't like to play games.
"Where are you, you manipulative little bitch?!" I screamed. I heard her childish laugh coming from my left direction, so I sprinted to where her scent led me.
Eventually, I found her standing near a tree. She twirled her hair and giggled.
"Stefan, you always liked to chase me, didn't you?" She flirted.
I darted over to her and slammed her to the ground by her shoulders. She grinned, and I let my fangs pierce out.
"You think this is a game, don't you?" I growled.
"Come on, Stefan. It's always a game."
I traced my hand over to her chest, and without question, dug my fingers deep into her skin and moved them around until I grabbed her heart.
"Not with me, it isn't." I hissed.
I didn't even bother to watch her die, just threw the heart away and pulled myself to my feet as little old Katherine crumbled into the pathetic corpse that she was.
I thought about what else Klaus had said to me.
'Do whatever your instincts tell you to.'
Smiling, I began to run once again.
A lot of people would be dying tonight.
