"Get em'!"
The boys hid behind a half fallen wall, pleading in their heads that the crowds of roaring people would leave them alone. The oldest of the three took off his coat and placed it over the other two.
"We need to go back for Wendy!" One of them cried.
"Shut up Natsu! That's what I'm about to do!" The oldest stood up and quickly looked around for the bluenette.
"Laxus, you can't be serious!" The black haired boy protested. "They'll kill you when they see you!"
"Don't you think I know that Gajeel?!"
The boy named Gajeel closed his mouth and held Natsu's arm. "We gotta stay here."
"What?!"
"Great Gajeel, I'll bring Wendy to the treehouse. Meet me there."
Just as Laxus was heading off, Natsu called out for him. "Laxus! I don't care that you're sixteen and we're ten! We can beat them all up!"
"That's what they're afraid of," Laxus sighed, "Natsu, you and Gajeel head to the treehouse now. Wendy's only five and I'm the only one who can carry her and fight at the same time."
"There they are!" The boys turned to see a group of angry looking townspeople glaring at them.
Laxus turned and screamed, "GO NOW!"
The younger boys didn't need to be told twice. They got up and ran as quickly as they could.
"They're getting away!" One of the townspeople yelled. "Get them!"
Before anyone could move, Laxus threw out his arm and a bolt of lightning hit the ground where Natsu and Gajeel had made their escape. "No one follows them."
"Laxus!" The blonde turned to his left to see a small girl running towards him. "Laxuusss!"
"Wendy!" He knelt to the floor and caught the little girl before she went flying past him. "You okay?"
"Uh huh!" She nodded.
"We've got to go." He stood up with Wendy in his arms and ran after Gajeel and Natsu.
"Stop them! We can't let the Dragon Slayers live!" The crowd yelled as they surged forwards, after the Dragon Slayers.
"Laxus!"
"I've got it!" Laxus turned around and once again threw out his arm, lightning shot from his fingertips and hit the ground in front of the crowd. He threw Wendy behind him, "Wendy, find Natsu and Gajeel at the treehouse. If I don't get there within half an hour then leave."
"B-But Laxus, come with me!"
"No Wendy! Leave!"
Wendy left the scene, and left Laxus with the angry people. standing before him.
"Stop this madness!" A small old man stormed his way to the front, blocking the way to Laxus. "He's done nothing wrong, you've all scared them! They're children, innocent harmless children!"
"Of course that's what you'd think Makarov!"
"He is your grandson after all!"
Makarov grew so he was a giant and glared at them all. "That may be so, but he looks after this town."
"Oh yeah? When did he ever do that?"
"Yeah!"
"Like that time he almost blew up the Magnolia Library?"
"Or when he and the other Dragon Slayers destroyed the school?"
"They definitely look after this town, by destroying it!"
"Laxus, do as I say and run." Makarov called out to the boy behind him.
"Gramps, I can do this. You don't need to keep treating me like I'm Natsu!" He took a step forwards, but a giant hand grabbed him and threw him back.
"To me, you're both children. And children need to be protected. Get out of here and look after them!"
"Gramps--,"
"NOW!" Makarov used his magic to fight the crowd of non-wizards and wizards in front of him, whilst Laxus was forced into hiding.
That's how this whole thing started. One day, Dragon Slayers were just seen as incredibly powerful sorcerers, but then after a while they became public enemy number one. The Royal Family were scared of their power and capabilities to overthrow them, thus the Dragon Slayers were hunted down and killed.
Those lucky enough to escape had to change everything about them. However, not all of them did...
Laxus' POV
"Laxus! We got the food!" I turned around and saw Wendy and Gajeel rushing towards me, in their hands were bread, eggs, fruit and veg as well as some other food. "Sorry we didn't get many eggs, but we had to go in and out quickly."
"There were guards today." Gajeel grunted.
"Again? They're patrolling more often these days." Taking the food off of Wendy, I opened the door of the underground home and gestured for them to enter.
"Oh right, we also got this!" Wendy reached into her small satchel and produced a small dark green cover. "The guy at the stall said that it can cover things and make them secret!"
"Good work." Wendy smiled happily and handed the cover to me before entering the underground house. Gajeel was about to enter when I stopped him.
"How much did you guys spend?"
"Overall, it was about 34,500 jewels."
"We need to use less next time, I'll go. I'm the best at maths."
"Sure." Gajeel followed after Wendy, and then once he was in I hopped in the entrance and closed the door behind me.
-----
"Where's Natsu? He said he'd be up by the time you guys got back." I asked.
"My guess is that he's still sleeping." Gajeel said, before grabbing an orange and throwing it to Wendy. "Here ya go Wendy."
"Thanks Gajeel!"
Natsu wandered into the small kitchen and yawned. "When're they comin' back?"
"We're here dumbass." Gajeel answered, throwing a pear at Natsu's head.
"Ouch! What the- Hey! It's a pear!" Grabbing the fruit and stuffing it in his mouth, Natsu completely forgot the fact that Gajeel had thrown it at his head.
"Gee, you guys are idiots."
"Ahem." Wendy coughed, "You guys promised not to use bad words this week."
"Sorry Wendy." We all apologised.
"That's okay!" She grinned with glee before opening a book and squinting at the words. "I think that I can read this!"
"Oh yeah?" I chuckled when I saw that the book she was holding was upside-down. "What does it say?"
"It says, 'The pirate took his hat and spoke to his team, then they were off to the park'."
Gajeel looked over and sighed. "Wendy it's upside down again."
"Wha- Really?!" She put the book down on the table, only to reveal another book inside of it which was the right way round. "Gotcha."
"Nice one." He said, before taking out the secret book. "'Luffy and the Straw Hats'?"
"It's a pirate story!"
"We know, we've read it." I told her.
"I knew that already! I'm 12, I'm clever!"
"I'm 17, so's Natsu. But I'm clever and he ain't."
"I HEARD THAT METAL HEAD!" Natsu yelled.
"YOU ALREADY KNOW THAT YOU'RE DUMB METAL HEAD."
"BRING IT ON FLAME BRAIN!"
"And you know that I'm the smartest because I don't start fights in a house which could fall down on you easily." I finished.
"Yeah, but you're old."
"23 is such an old age." Natsu and Gajeel said. I whacked them both on the heads with the back of my hand.
"Knock it off! Or you're sleeping outside tonight."
The guys shut up and Wendy went back to reading her book. Meanwhile, I took the food and put them away in the cupboards.
"Did you guys buy some more blankets?"
"Oh shoot we didn't." Gajeel facepalmed.
"Don't worry, I'll go get some." I grabbed the money off of the table and made my way out of our home. "Same rules guys, someone has to make sure that if I don't return within six hours that they cover the entrance and keep and eye out."
"We got it boss." They all chimed together.
"Well then, I'll see you soon."
-------
The walk into town was a long one, it took an hour on foot and I missed the local farmer's wagon ride he always offered. Why did they forget the freaking blankets? Seriously, they were the ones complaining that they were cold at night.
It had been seven years since the new laws had come about. All Dragon Slayers were to be killed or brought to the palace. I'd heard rumours that they almost took Cobra, the Poison Dragon Slayer, alive but he escaped. He told a bunch of people that the Royal family had tried to drain him of all his magic and use it to power some device. Because of that, we had to move from our treehouse to a secret underground house.
We moved away from Magnolia too, we decided that it was too much of a risk to stay there, so instead we moved to the outskirts of Fiore. We couldn't leave Fiore due to the fact that at the border, there were guards on watch for any criminals trying to escape.
The worst thing was that I had somehow made it to the top of their wanted list. Cobra was up there too, but his bounty was much higher than mine.
Not many people knew about Wendy, seven years ago I tried to spread the rumour that the other three had died but it didn't spread far enough. The guards were still searching for them, not as determined as catching me but they were still looking.
I pulled up the hood on my grey cape and continued to take the long country road into town. It was somewhere near midday, so I had to be careful. Rich families passed by the small town and whenever someone rich passed by, there was sure to be some guards with them.
"Apples! Get yer free apples here!" A local man was yelling out. "Hey! If it isn't Laxus! Need to buy an apple?"
"No thanks Bex," shaking my head I smiled, "The others already bought some earlier."
"Oh, too bad. What're you heading into town for then?"
"Blankets, summers almost over."
"I hear that Thea's got some blankets for cheap, and some info about the Royal guards." I forgot to mention, Bex knew about me and the others being Dragon Slayers, so did Thea. "I think it was something along the lines of Cobra being caught."
"No way."
"That ain't the worst thing boy. Your bounty's gotten higher." He pulled out a piece of paper from his jacket.
"Sheesh, 8,000,000 jewels?!"
"It's something about you being different from the other Dragon Slayers," He squinted at the text, "I can't read well, but it says something like a 'laxity'..."
"Let me see," I took the paper off of Bex and read it. "It says 'lacrima'... Wait, they know about the lacrima?!"
"Uhh, Laxus.... I have no idea what one of those things are."
"You don't need to know Bex, just knowing its name is already bad enough." I sighed handing him back the piece of paper. "Well, I'm heading into town now."
"Careful! The Royal Guards are coming through soon!"
As I walked off, I gave him a reassuring wave. "I'll be fine, I always am!"
How wrong I was...
----------------
"Thea!" The young shopkeeper waved to me as I made my way towards her. "Bex tells me that you've got cheap blankets."
"Bex is right 'bout that!" She said with her country accent. "How much do y'all want? I got six for 4,000 or eight for 5,450!"
"Eight, your offers are getting cheaper. You sure you can afford to sell them at this price?"
She shrugged. "I'm hoping that the army'll buy some things... I got one item specially saved."
"How special?"
"Very."
"Okay then, thanks again!"
"Oh no Laxus!" She grinned. "Thank you."
Huh? Weird...
Strolling away, I cursed as I saw the Royal Guards making their way into the centre of town. This is too early for them... I expected another half hour or so....
The man at the front yelled out, "Where is the criminal?"
The crowd burst into chatter, I heard things along the lines of "Who?", "There's a criminal here?!", "How did we not know?", "Where are they?!"
"Shit."
"Sir!" Thea grabbed my arm and sent me an evil smirk. "Here I have the man you requested!"
"Thea!" I gasped.
"We know where three other of the Dragon Slayers are!" Bex's voice called out.
"Oh really?" The guard approached me and removed the good of my cape. "This is Laxus Dreyar!"
The crowd went silent. I cursed Bex and Thea for the betrayal, then got to work.
"Lighting Dragon's Roar!" The Royal Guard's formation was destroyed as I attack the ground around them. Their horses whinnied and fled but not before throwing their riders to the ground.
"Don't let him escape!"
Thea and Bex grinned at me and grabbed each other's hand. Then they began chanting some spell, something to do with pain...
"Facere nostrum hostibus sentire dolor, Facere nostrum hostibus sentire dolor..."
Suddenly, it was as if I was being hit continuously everywhere on my body. My nose began to bleed, my head felt as if someone was hitting it with a metal pipe and I could hardly stand. The Royal Guards all raised their arms as if they were going to use their own magic against me.
"...S-Shit..." I whispered.
Electricity ran through my body, trying to heal me. It didn't work, I needed some sort of expensive healing potion. The Royal Guards began to use their magic, the front line threw magic lasers at me and with great difficulty I dodged. I would've used my Dragon Slayer magic but I wasn't strong enough to use it and keep consciousness.
What I was able to do, was to call upon a lighting storm. The people around me all screamed and ran away, and whilst the Royal Guards were trying to keep the peace as well as remain in formation, I made my escape.
---------
Eventually, I made it to a small road in the forest. However it was in the opposite direction from the underground house, and closer to Magnolia. I collapsed on the side of the road and closed my eyes. Before I became unconscious, I heard the galloping of horse's hooves on the ground, a carriage stop and a girl say something along the lines of, "Poor thing."
Natsu, Gajeel and Wendy... Stay safe.
