Liana woke up to the bright sun shining down on her. she sat up and realized she had fallen asleep in the park on the grass. She noticed Tanner was gone, but there was a blanket placed on her and a pillow under her head.
She smiled, "how thoughtful" she whispered to herself.
Liana picked up the blanket and pillow and grabbed her phone to head home. Her phone buzzed and she saw Tanner's name pop up.
Sorry, I didn't want to wake you up. And I had an early morning lacrosse practice I had to go to.
Liana smiled at the text. Lacrosse is such a hot sport. Maybe I'll go watch him play She thought, but then she caught herself. That's weird, maybe I won't watch him
Liana walked over to Tanner's house to return the blanket and pillow. Tanner was still at his practice, so his mom answered.
"Hello Liana!" She said happily.
"Hi Mrs. Brooks," Liana replied. "Tanner let me borrow these" she held out the blanket and pillow, "I just need to return them"
"Did Tanner sleep over with Trent last night?"
"Oh. Umm no. We had this, uhh, geography project and we had to look at the umm stars, yes stars."
"Do you mean, astronomy?" Mrs brooks asked, "geography has nothing to do with stars"
"Uhh well uhh times have changed" Liana replied with a smile.
"Well, ok if you say so, dear." she answered, clearly unconvinced, "you can drop those off in Tanner's room. Upstairs to the right. Tanner should be home soon if you want to talk to him"
Liana thanked her and took her directions to Tanner's room. His room was more organized than she expected. His bed was in the corner of the room and he had a desk under his window. He had a few papers on the top of the desk but other than that it was clean.
Liana folded the blankets, not wanting to ruin the clean look, and put them on his bed. She walked over to his desk and noticed a book hidden under the scattered papers. She grabbed it and walked back to his bed.
Liana immediately noticed it was the ruined book she gave him, but when she opened the book she saw different notes scribbled throughout it. Little random comments, sometimes just one word. She tapped her foot as she read the notes
'He worked up the courage, and told her how he felt' she read, and off to the side Tanner had written I wish in his messy, but legible handwriting.
'Her brown hair sparkles in the sun' I doubt it's a pretty as Liana's
Liana noticed she had gotten up and started walking around his room while she was reading. This happened a lot at her house, and all Liana could do was hope it wouldn't happen at school. She sat back down on Tanners bed and kept reading.
'He just wanted to disappear from embarrassment' relatable
'He loved her, he loved her with all his heart' just like how I love Liana
The last comment stopped her. She stared at it. Was he being serious? She thought. Does he actually love me?
"Liana?" She heard his voice and her head snapped up to the doorway.
Tanner was standing there in his Lacrosse gear, still tired and sweaty from his practice. His hair was messy but in the cutest way.
"Tanner I-," Liana started, but she didn't have anything to say.
Tanner walked over and grabbed the book from her hand, "what are you doing?" He asked, his tone was calm but he was tense as he scanned the page Liana had read.
"I'm sorry I just saw it and-,"
"You know what? It doesn't matter, just go." Tanner said softly.
Liana nodded and left without looking back. What would she say to him? Should she pretend she didn't read that? Or would now be a good time to tell him she felt the same way?
And the biggest question of them all, should she go to his lacrosse game?
Liana lay in her bed, eyes staring at the blank ceiling above her.
Did he mean what he wrote? Or was it just a joke? Would Liana find her courage to tell him how she felt?
.....
Later that day, Liana was walking around her room with a book in her hand, but her mind couldn't fully focus. She was still deciding if she should go to his game or not.
She glanced up at the time-2:17.
Screw it she thought, and she grabbed a snack and left for his game. Sure, it didn't start till 3, but she wanted to catch Tanner before the game.
Liana walked into the field and over to the bleachers. There were a few kids here and there, but not many. Liana searched the field for Tanner, and saw him playing on the field.
Yup, She thought, lacrosse is such a hot sport.
About ten minutes before the game started, the players took a break to drink water and get ready for the game. Liana practically ran across the bleachers to talk to Tanner.
Liana got to the field and saw Tanner walk underneath another set of bleachers. She sped over there, eager to see if Tanner was telling the truth in his book.
Liana turned the corner to the edge of the bleachers and saw Tanner, but he was hugging another girl. The girls face was facing away from Liana, so she couldn't see who it was. But she saw Tanner, his eyes were closed with a faint smile on his face. He looked peaceful.
Liana admired his happy face, before realizing what he was doing.
Liana started backing away, not taking her eyes off the couple.
It was all a joke she thought, he never meant it. That whole book, it was a joke.
Liana turned and ran when she felt tears in her eyes. She heard footsteps hitting the grass behind her. Liana peeked a look back and saw Tanner running after her. She ignored him and kept running. As she reached the edge of the field, she turned and started heading towards the bridge.
Liana didn't slow down until she got there. She walked up the bridge, and then sat down with her back against the railing, head in her hands. The sounds of the river crashing against rocks filled her ears. Her feet were tapping the ground in a steady rhythm, but she noticed they were and she stopped them.
I gotta stop doing that she thought, people would sometimes point out that she's tapping her feet constantly. Last year her teacher made her take off her shoes during a test because it was too loud and distracting, so Liana just fidgeted with her pencil instead.
Liana started fidgeting with her hands and popping her fingers while she thought. Liana had fallen in love with Tanner, and he already has a girlfriend. How could she be so foolish? And it looked to be the same girl he'd kissed earlier
