Chapter 30: Feelings
The next few days were a little chaotic, but it wasn't too bad. Stacy's arm had been treated, and she was doing better, although she would be out of commission for a while. She was one of our best players so I have no idea how semis would actually go. But what matters is that she's fine.
Christmas break had started, but none of my friends were around so I mostly sat at home and watched movies or played games. Nick had called his stupid girlfriend over so many damn times, it was annoying. Both our parents were at home now since it was the holidays, so luckily, I didn't have to see or hear anything disgusting. It also didn't help that she reminded me of stupid Asher everytime I saw her. The two of them are uncanny despite the age difference. She's a literal female version of him.
Today on Christmas eve however, my mom was out working on some charity thing since during the holidays is when most people feel like giving and volunteering. So, she was busy. My dad had gone to visit my grandparents, but both of them would be back by evening. Nick was out with his girlfriend Emma again, so it was just me alone at home binge eating to my heart's content.
I didn't really have any plans today either. I had finished most of my holiday homework out of boredom. I never thought that I'd ever be so bored in my entire life that I would actually do homework. Oh well.
Shawn and I hadn't spoken since the weird moment a few days ago, and I thought about texting him a few times about working on the project or something, but I wasn't sure. It was pretty awkward now, but we've had plenty of awkward moments before. Besides, none of my friends were actually at home for the holidays except him.
Like as if I'd manifested it, my phone lit of with a text from him at that moment. Jeez, it's freaky how that happens.
Shawn: Hey, I'm bored af. Wanna work on the project?
Me: Sure. Wht time?
Shawn: I'm coming over.
Me: What? Now?
Me: Shawn?
This guy really had no limits, did he? I stared around at the living room which was a complete mess with chips and candy wrappers lying all around. Shit.
I cleaned it all up at record speed, and then fixed my hair which I had lazily tied into a messy bun, which had got even messier. I was only in a sports bra, so I pulled on a top over my head right when I heard the doorbell ring.
I walked downstairs and pulled the door open to find Shawn standing there with a dumb grin on his face, and a backpack slung over his right shoulder. He was wearing jeans and Nike air Jordans, along with a leather jacket and white t-shirt that hugged his muscles. He looked freaking hot, and the leather jacket amazingly suited him. His hair was messy in a good way, and I'm sure I was gaping at him until I finally cleared my throat and stepped back to let him in.
"Hi Shawn. I don't see your car; did you walk in this cold?"
"Nope, I took the subway."
He walked into the house and into the living room, dumping his bag on the couch and taking off his jacket, exposing his biceps. Jeez, who wears these kinds of shirts in winter?
"Can I ask why you take the subway? I mean, you've got a freaking Mercedes you don't really need to."
He took out his stuff from his bag, and didn't look at me when he responded. "Yeah well, I don't always feel the need to advertise it. People just tend to think I'm some spoiled rich kid."
"Makes sense."
"I took your advice, and I've been meaning to show you this sketch I drew."
"Sure, what is it?"
He handed me a wrinkled sheet of paper where I could make out pencil lines had been drawn. When I actually took it and looked at it, I had to stifle a gasp.
It was a drawing of the two of us playing basketball, each detail so intricate and precise that he hadn't really missed anything. I was dribbling the ball, and he was attempting to snatch it from me. The facial features were exactly the same, and it actually looked like me. It was astounding.
"Holy shit... Shawn this is... wow."
"You like it?"
"Yeah! You should seriously pursue art as your major along with basketball."
He scoffed and took the sketch back from me, stuffing it in his bag. "Maybe."
We continued working on the project, and it was all coming together now, as we stuck pictures and Shawn's sketches and wrote small essays. One thing we still hadn't full figured out is what story the project was actually telling. Two captains? Two friends? Two awkward teenagers? I have no idea.
"Want to go get coffee?" Shawn asked after a while of silence. "Sure. But you didn't bring your car and I don't drive. You can make coffee here if you want."
"Nah, I want a cappuccino. Also, you don't drive? Seriously?"
"Megan tried to teach me and it was a disaster."
"You're kidding. I'm so teaching you how to drive. Grab your jacket, we're getting my car."
"What? But-"
He grabbed my hand and dragged me to the door, taking my jacket off the hanger and shoving it in my arms despite my protests. I hastily managed to pull it on, which was quite a challenge since he was holding my hand. Wait a minute, why is he still holding my hand?
We rushed onto the subway, where we nearly fell onto some poor guy just trying to maintain his balance. Along the entire way I made fun of Shawn's hair which had become a nest, until we reached his house.
We got in his car and he drove us to the less crowded streets that Megan had taken me when she was teaching me driving. We switched seats once we got there and it was my turn. Although, I was surprised that Shawn was letting anyone else touch his precious Mercedes.
"All right, you've got to go easy on this car, okay? It's not like the others. Don't accelerate like your life depends on it, just ease into it. The engine takes care of the rest." He placed my hands at ten and two on the steering wheel and strapped himself in. "All right let's go. Slowly press down."
I did as he told, trying to carefully press my foot onto the accelerator. I expected the car to start moving slowly, but it zipped a lot faster than I expected it to, even for a second. "Woah. This car is crazy."
"I told you, it's one of the best. Be careful with it or I'll kill you."
An hour and a few near accidents later, I was actually managing to drive with ease. The engine on his car was freaking amazing, I could actually feel the mechanisms whirring under my feet. Driving was honestly so fun. I felt amazingly free, like as if the entire world was mine to travel and explore. I seriously should have started driving earlier.
After a little longer, we switched seats again and Shawn drove us to the Burger King drive thru and we got some food to eat. It was dark now and was pretty close to dinner time, not to mention I was getting hungry.
I got a chicken burger and some fries, while Shawn got a double patty whooper and some coke. We sat and ate in the parked car, with tissues all over the dashboard.
"You're not bad you know. A few more lessons and I'm sure you'll get your license."
"Thanks."
"So, what do you like to do? You know, besides basketball and annoying me."
I punched him on the shoulder before answering. "I'm not sure. I've never really thought about it. I suppose I can dance a little. I also know how to box."
"Ha, dancing? This I have to see."
I hit him again and stole a sip of his coke. "Shut up. You saw that video of us at the party. Second hand embarrassment aside, I'm a good dancer."
He pretended to think about it for a moment before finally agreeing. "Maybe. But I'm still better than you."
"In your dreams."
"Is that a challenge?"
We both glared at each other for two seconds before getting out of the car and Shawn started to play a song. I walked over to the other side and we both had a little dance off, right then. There wasn't anybody around since it was Christmas eve, so it wasn't too weird. I hated to admit that Shawn actually had some pretty good moves, and I think he was break dancing at one point. I laughed at his attempt to do a flip and flexed some more of my moves in his face.
When he still wouldn't give up, I decided to make it more interesting. I probably looked like an idiot, but I tried to do the whole sexy dance thing. I flipped my hair and ran my fingers through it, and moved my hips, crouching down and getting back up by sticking out my ass as much as possible. His dance moves faltered as he stared at me with wide eyes, and then went to stand behind the open car door for some reason.
"Ha! Suck it Hunter, I won."
"You sure did Peirce. Wow, that was... I had no clue you could move like that."
"I'm full of surprises."
I smirked at him and made to move to go around to the other side so I could get back in the car, but my jacket got caught on the door and I tripped. I would have fallen flat on my face if Shawn hadn't caught me.
I could feel his warm hand against my abdomen, and his other hand on my shoulder. I managed to tug my jacket away and stand up properly, my face red. "Thanks."
His hands still hadn't moved from where they were, and I hadn't moved either. I stared up at him, waiting to see what he would do. His fingers twitched and I felt his hand inch closer to my waist, his finger brushing against my bare skin under my top, my skin tingling from the sensation. My breath hitched in my throat.
His other hand moved from my shoulder down to the other side of my waist, and he gently pulled me closer. My face was directly in front of his now, the wind blowing his hair in a nice way and his eyes filled with a different kind of emotion I hadn't seen before.
I felt like my heart was going to jump out of my throat. Normally, I would have pushed him away but I didn't. I actually liked the feeling of his hands on my waist for some reason. It felt... comforting. I didn't know what to do when I felt him lean towards me, his eyes trained on my lips. I almost leaned in myself, until the sound of horns blaring in the distance startled us awake.
I stepped away from him, his eyes just as wide as mine and his face just as red. We just stood there staring at each other, neither of us sure of what to say after that. Did Shawn just try to kiss me? Woah, no.
"I, um... it's getting late and my parents are probably home. I should go."
"Right."
"Bye."
With that I turned around and walked off, since my house wasn't too far away anyway. Oh my god, why did I just let him do that? I never even let Asher do that. Shawn and I have had our weird moments, but that was by far the most. Why the hell did I like it? What seemed like such a small insignificant movement? No way was I going to let myself catch feelings for Shawn Hunter. Nuh uh.
I was just more scared it was too late for that.
