Chapter 15: Can't imagine
Sup guys. About the song up top, I like this male upbeat version that's there in this video, better than the original female and slower version of this song , so I just put this edit. The cover may look weird but yeah. Enjoy!
Life can be one messy, shitfaced train ride. I swear to god, its like I'm a puppet to the entire universe, and it thinks it would be fun to chuck me off a cliff and see what happens. Accidentally messing up other peoples lives without meaning to, definitely checks off that box.
The next day at school, I didn't see Kayla all day. I was getting worried, who knows what kind of trouble that girl could have gotten into? And it would be completely my fault. I had tried to do the right thing and ended up making everything worse. Go figure.
Then it happened.
Just as the final bell rang, signalling the end of the school day. Everyone piled out of the classrooms, and found a very angry Kayla in the hallway, screaming bloody murder at the top of her lungs like a deranged bat.
"Shawn Hunter! Where the fucking hell are you?"
Everybody stopped walking and gaped at her, wondering what the hell was going on. They all started to gather around, waiting to see what would happen.
Shawn emerged from the crowd and walked up to Kayla, a confused look on his face. "Babe? What are you-"
Then she slapped him across the face.
It was like the sound of a gunshot, and you could hear the stinging in the air. The entire crowd gasped, taking out their phones and recording it, unable to tear their eyes away from the scene. I heard my friends run up from behind me, looking at the whole thing in shock.
Shawn held his cheek, his expression changing from confusion to anger. "What the hell?! Why did you just slap me?"
"I trusted you. My friends were right, you really are just a disgusting man whore. Cheating on me with that crazy bitch Katherine White!"
Everybody turned to a Katherine after that, who I recognized as the same girl who was with Shawn that day. Her face turned sheepish, her cheeks a beetroot red.
Shawn still feigned innocence. "What? First of all, since when were we ever an official thing?"
"How dare you!" Kayla shrieked. "I already know what you did, I have evidence!"
Then she held out her phone, showing the picture for everyone to see. Only the people nearby could actually see it, and Shawn most definitely did.
"What the fuck? Are you stalking me you psycho?!"
"No! Peirce sent it to me, you idiot!"
Everyone looked at me after that, confused as to why I would possibly be involved in this drama. I was wondering the exact same thing.
I turned towards Megan, who was looking at me in surprise, her eyes asking a silent question. I turned back to face Shawn, who looked beyond livid. The way he had complete contempt towards me and betrayal in his eyes looked so real, it actually hurt. Even though he was the person in the wrong here.
Just when I thought it couldn't possibly get any worse, another guy rose from the crowd. I didn't recognise him, but evidently, he was Katherine's boyfriend.
"Katherine? How could you?" He asked hurtfully, looking at her with sad and angry eyes.
Katherine didn't say anything and ran away from the crowd, sobbing into her hands. One of her friends ran after her, but everybody else stayed. The guy turned to face Shawn, his fists clenched and nostrils flared. He pulled his hand back, and punched Shawn right in the jaw.
Everyone oohed again as he toppled onto the ground, his expression twisted in pain. It soon changed to rage as he got right back up and punched the guy in the gut.
Before I knew it, it turned into an all-out fight, with biting, kicking and shoving. The other guy was no match for Shawn, who picked him up off the ground easily, and flung him into the wall of lockers with so much strength that one of the lockers got dented. Kayla ran away screaming, clinging onto her cheerleader friends for dear life.
The other guy's nose was bleeding, and an ugly bruise was forming under his eye. Thankfully, the teachers showed up before it could get any worse. Those idiots should have come ages ago.
"Mr. Hunter! Go to the principal's office right now! Mr. Larkin, go get cleaned up by the nurse and then report to the principal's office as well!"
The two of them trudged off, glaring at each other the whole way. The teacher then turned to a crying Kayla, putting a hand on her shoulder and whisking her off.
"Everyone go home!" Another teacher yelled, and the crowd started to disperse. Megan, Tyler and Ezra still stood there gaping at me, eyebrows raised. "Well?" Megan demanded.
I sighed. "Let's just go get coffee, I'll explain at Loco Latte."
Tyler drove us there and I told them the entire story. Ezra was silent the entire time, Megan was just gaping at me, and Tyler was rolling his eyes.
"You probably shouldn't have gotten involved in Kayla's life."
"I know that now! I was trying to do the right thing. Fat lot of good it did me."
No one said anything else and I looked down at my watch. It was almost time for my shift at the froyo shop. "Hey guys, I've got to split. See you tomorrow!"
I got up to leave but Tyler joined me. "I've got to go too, I'm way behind on homework."
We walked out of the café together and I started to walk off on my own, until Tyler called me. "Alex! Want me to drop you home? It's on the way to my house anyway."
I froze, trying to think of some viable excuse. "Um, no thanks Ty. I was uh...going to go get frozen yogurt! Cravings, am I right?" I said awkwardly. Yeesh, what the hell? I'm usually a good liar.
"Frozen yogurt? Really? I've been meaning to go have some. Screw homework, let's go together!"
Aw, crap. Not having much of a choice, I agreed and got into his car and he drove to the froyo place. Shit, I've got to come up with some kind of excuse. I was so wrapped up in my own thoughts, that I didn't even realize when we reached. "Alex? Do you want to get out of the car?"
"Yeah! Sorry."
I got out and shut the door behind me, still not having a damn clue what to tell Tyler. Just then he got a phone call and he stepped away to take it. Now's my chance.
I ran into the shop where I saw Asher at the counter. He was about to open his mouth but I cut him off before he could speak. "Listen, I'm kind of stuck here with my friend, I'm so sorry to do this but can you just pretend I don't work here for five minutes?"
He looked stunned for a second or two, then smiled. "All right."
I gave him a grateful look and ran back outside, seeing that Tyler was just hanging up the phone. "Hey Tyler, let's go in."
He didn't respond, and just continued to stand there with his back to me. "Ty?" I asked again, but he still didn't say anything. Confused, I walked over to stand in front of him and he looked like he'd seen a ghost. His face was pale and full of dread, his phone shaking in his hands and his eyes distant.
"Ty?" I asked again gently, now worried. He didn't look so good, staring at the ground with a numb look. I slowly took his phone out of his shaking hands before he dropped it, and placed my hand on his shoulders. "What's wrong?"
He finally looked up, his expression still the same. He didn't reply for a few seconds, trying to speak but no sound coming out. I waited.
"That was my mom. She said that... Grandpa was in an accident. He... he didn't make it."
Oh god.
Tears started to fill his eyes and I pulled him close to me, his head on my shoulder. We just stood there in each other's arms for I don't know how long, not saying a word as he sobbed onto my jacket. I didn't mind.
He pulled away, wiping his eyes using his hands. "Sorry. This is embarrassing."
"It's okay Ty. Nothing to be embarrassed about."
He didn't say anything, trying to get himself to move. "I've got to go home. Thanks Alex."
I smiled. "You sure you can drive?"
"Yeah."
With one last wave, he got into his car and drove off. I sighed. Poor Tyler. I can't even imagine what he's going through right now. His grandpa was everything to him. I didn't say 'I'm sorry', because frankly I don't like that line. How does it really convey anything? I would have offered to go along with him, but this was a family thing, and he needed to be with them right now.
I took a deep breath and walked into the shop, putting my apron on. Asher was still behind the counter and started smirking when he saw me. "Well, if it isn't the person who asks for favours on their second day."
"I'm sorry about that. My friend left anyway."
I think he could sense my mood was a little off, so he didn't talk to me after that. I worked in silence, doing everything to the best effort I can. Once my shift got over, I said goodbye to Asher and walked back home.
As I turned towards the street where my house was, I saw none other than Shawn Hunter, standing on the edge of the street, angrily staring at me. I should have never told him my address.
"Shawn. What are you doing here?"
"Are you seriously asking me that?" He said, fuming. "You're the reason Kayla went batshit crazy on me, even though I never agreed we were officially together! Also why I have a week of detention. I could have gotten suspended! Luckily Coach came in and said they couldn't lose me so close to the next match. I'm still going to end up missing some practice."
"Good for you." I snapped, and started to walk down the street to my house. He ran after me like an annoying cat.
"How dare you be snarky to me, you little snitch! Were you spying on me like a psycho? Taking pictures?"
"What?! Hell no. I was on my way home and saw you both rolling down the street like you'd escaped from a mental hospital. Don't get angry with me, you're the sick cheater over here. Or, at least Kayla thinks so."
"That's none of your business. And I thought we were on a truce? Was that all just some ruse for you to get revenge on me?"
I stopped walking. "No! I discovered you guys by accident!"
Shawn stood directly in front of me, uncomfortably close to my face and blocked my path. "What I do in my own time, is none of your damned business, you understand? That fight happened in school today, all thanks to you. You created this chaos. And I swear to god, if you ever get in my way again, you will regret it."
I didn't back away as he said all that, staring right back at him and not letting him get to me. He had managed to get in my head a little though, but I wasn't going to let him know that.
"I'd like to see you try, you fucking asshole. Don't try and blame this on me, you're responsible for your own damn actions. You should have been clear about with Kayla from the beginning. If you bombard me in front of my house again, you will regret it. Now get the hell out of my way."
With that, I shoved him in the shoulder and pushed past him to my house. What a jerk! He cheats on his- or whatever it is that he did, and has the audacity to blame it on me? Tyler was right, that guy was a complete asshole. He played with people and got away with it, only this time I didn't let him. That's why he's so pissed. I'm the only person who won't let him push me around. Unlike poor Kayla, who got manipulated.
Trying to push my anger down, I turned and went home.
