twenty-three
"Vallee," Dumbledore says. I feel my spell wearing off. "What are you doing here?" He looks angry.
"I... I was-"
"She was merely a curious girl," Snape cuts in.
Everyone looks at him in shock. Why was Severus sticking up for me?
"That doesn't give her an excuse," Minerva says quietly. But the tension in the room had gone down.
Filius adjust his glasses.
"I'm sorry," I mumble half-heartedly. But I was knealing next to Harry, searching for what Sybill saw. "Let me see your glasses."
She looks at me like I'm crazy. "My glasses?" she asks.
"Just give them," I say impatiently. She hands me the pair of blue round glasses.
"Be careful," she whisper-shouts.
I roll my eyes because I doubt that a pair of glasses is of importance right now. I slip on the glasses, but my vision merely turns blurry. I rip them off and practically throw them at Sybill. "Why?" I say, throwing my head back as tears gather in my eyes. "Why can't I tell?"
"Look closer, dear," Sybill tells me, wrapping her arm around my shoulder. I look back at Harry, sniffling. "Come on, child. You can see it. Believe in yourself."
I look. I look harder. I look even closer.
Then I see it. A slight rise in his chest; a slight fall. He's breathing.
I break out into a smile.
"Oh, isn't this wonderful?" I ask Sybill, standing.
She meets my gaze for a moment, then looks back at the other professors. They're silently communicating.
"What?" I ask. What could possibly go wrong now? They can't give me hope then simply crush it. Right?
"He could have some... issues," Filius says quietly.
"Just tell the girl!" Severus exclaims.
Filius glares at him, but says nothing.
"Fine. If you won't tell her, I will." Severus sighs and moves to stand in front of me. "Harry could be troubled. He could be haunted by horrid nightmares and visions. That is, if the piece of Voldemort in him doesn't come out."
My face drops. "There's a piece of Voldemort in him?"
He lets out a long breath. "Vallee, he might not make it. He could go crazy or kill himself to get rid of the voices. I... Just don't get your hopes up." He pulls me into a tight hug as tears well up in my eyes. I hug him back, his musky scent filling my nose. He smells like potions, which isn't surprising. "Sh," he says comfortingly.
"It's just one thing after another for me," I sob. "I will never get a break."
I hear him sigh against the top of my head. "I know. I get it. I understand."
I bury my face in his chest as the tears worsen.
"Severus," I hear Dumbledore warn.
I feel Snape shift his weight and tighten my grip. "No! Don't! Please, I need you."
Severus pulls me on to his lap. He brushes my hair and murmurs soothingly in my ear.
"Okay, I think that is quite enough," Minerva says, stress lacing through her words.
Snape sets me back on the ground and stands, leaving me to cry on my own. I beg him with my eyes to see my pain, to ignore them. Because he can't give me comfort then rip it away.
But he won't look at me. Something has changed in the past five seconds. He's giving me the cold shoulder.
"What is your problem?" I yell standing, and getting in Minerva's face.
She flinches, then stares at me stonily. "You will not talk to me like that," she says coldly.
I clench my fists, willing myself not to punch her. "You will answer me," I say. "Or I will tell Voldemort everything."
There. I see the worry flash in her eyes. She sighs and looks at Dumbledore. "Well?"
"Severus?" Dumbledore asks.
I look at Snape; his dark hair, his tall and slim frame. "It's your choice, Professor." He says it sadly, but here hope in his voice.
Dumbledore comes closer to me. "Vallee, this might frighten you. You might get hurt or scared."
I shake my head. "I won't. I'm strong; especially after all of this."
He returns the head shake. "You don't understand," he says. "This is much different than anything you've ever experienced." He sighs and fiddles with his long, white beard. "Vallee-"
Someone rushes in. "Dumbledore! Minerva! Severus!"
I turn and see Hagrid. "He back, sirs- ma'am. He back an' he ain't happy," he exclaims.
I stiffen. "Oh no," I whisper.
Hagrids about to continue, when his eyes rest on me. "Vallee? Why 're you upset?" He feezes and looks behind me, where Harry rests. "Is t'at? Oh... Harry..." He frowns, looks around, then starts bawling. Not a few tears, no, full on sobbing. I rush over to hug him. He wraps his burly arms around me. He smells like the woods. "Oh, he ain't deserve this. No, oh no."
His crying is enough to make me start sobbing again. Who would have thought- Hagrid, of all people, sobbing.
"Oh, Vallee, all he ever wanted was to be happy. He wanted to be everyone's hero. He was so hard on himself."
I pull away a bit, keeping my palms on his elbows. "I know, Hagrid."
"I loved him," Hagrid cried.
"So did I," I whisper.
He nods and turns away, towards the wall. Someone comes up behind me. It's Dumbledore. "We have to go," he tells me. "You have to fight him."
"I am him," I say.
Dumbledore freezes. He looks at Severus, then looks at me. He's not saying something. What is he hiding? "No you're not," he says.
I stare at him, befuddled. "What? Of course I am. He created me."
Dumbledore merely shakes his head. "Vallee, you are the daughter of Severus Snape and Bellatrix LeStrange."
I barely have time to absorb this when the world goes dark.
