nineteen
Pain. An unbelievably strong pain floods me. But I must not show it. Voldemort can never know of my love for Harry. He never will.
"Ah, now, Vallee, our battle is practically over. Once they see their Chosen One dead, they won't have any fight left in them."
A few Death hunters step out of the trees so I can see them. I recognize Wormtail, but that's it. Why didn't I know these other ones? I suppose I had been gone for several months.
"Wormtail, grab the boy," Voldemort says and starts walking away swiftly.
I look behind me and see Wormtail dragging Harry, laughing the whole time.
I walk beside Voldemort. "I am so proud of you. But I think you need these past memories erased. Would you agree? That they need to go?"
"Well, I would't know why," I reply calmly, even though I'm totally freaking out on the inside. Erase my memories? What on earth is he talking about?
"Well, he... touched you. Surely you wouldn't want to remember that?" He actually looks concerned.
"It will make me stronger," I reply coolly.
He nods. "Yes, I suppose it will," he murmurs. "Still, though. I can make you strong. You don't need... disturbing memories."
I knew he wasn't going to give it up. But I couldn't lose my memories of Harry, especially us making love. That was too much. It would hurt too much.
But you wouldn't remember.
I feel like crying. My throat tightens and tears push at my eyes, begging to be released. They cannot fall.
He sighs. "But we don't have time for that now. You must go ahead of me. Go on."
I look at him and nod. "Alright."
He places a hand on my shoulder. I tense, but force my shoulders to loosen. "Does your father not deserve a hug?"
I turn to him and smile. "Of course." I hug him tightly, fear rippling through me. What if he senses my unease? What if... I shake the fear away. It wasn't worth thinking about. Surely he would have called me out by now if he suspected anything.
I pull away. "I'll go," I say to him. He nods. I start walking up the hill, until I reach the top. The Yard is completely destroyed. I see a multiple dead bodies, but immediately look away. It made me sick.
That's why I didn't think of Harry. I couldn't. It hurt to much to bear.
"Vallee! Where have you been? We got them! The Horcruxes! They're going to be destroyed!" Hermione runs up to me, completely ecstatic. "We were wondering if you would have the honor."
I smile coolly, because I know Voldemort is behind me. "I can take care of them. Just hand them over."
But Hermione wasn't looking at me anymore. She was looking behind me, at something I couldn't see. I knew what it was, but I couldn't think about it. But, still, I turn, and the choking feeling fills me once more. His slumped body. His pale skin.
I look away, towards Voldemort. He smiles. I smile, too, because I'm powerless and I have to play along, even though I wish to scream and bawl my eyes out.
"Harry?" Hermione asks, her voice cracking.
This wasn't how it was supposed to go. He was supposed to be kept captive, be tortured when Voldemort took him back to the mansion, but it wouldn't have even gotten to that because I would have killed Voldemort.
Sounds of mourning echo all around me. I try my best not to join them. I can't break cover now.
"Where is Harry Potter?" I hear Minerva McGonnogal. I see her mouth move into the 'O' shape it makes when one gasps. I see her face move into the unforgettable expression of heartbreak. She's seen Harry.
"Harry Potter is dead!" A fake sob comes from Voldemort as he proclaims this. "Yes, yes, very sad, very touching," he says, waving his hands. Then he stops, his lip tilting up in a smile. "Where's Severus? He's going to miss the best part." Then he grasps Hermione by her hair. "Now, little Mudblood, where are my horcruxes?"
"I'll never say," she spat.
Voldemort recoils. "How dare this girl defy me!" he announces to the crowd.
Suddenly, Severus appears out of nowhere. he glances at me, and I feel so much emotion wash over me, I'm suddenly awestruck. What just happened? But he pushes past me and heads straight towards Voldemort.
"You called for me?" he asks.
Voldemort studies him. "That was merely a moment ago."
Severus doesn't lose his cool. "Word travels fast."
"Hm. Yes, I suppose it does. Now, Severus, I know how much you despise Mudbloods. So I'm sure you'll find much pleasure in killing this one."
"Kill her?" Severus asks, his cool faltering for a moment.
Voldemorts smile grows. "Yes. Is there a problem, Severus?"
He gulps. "Of course not, my Lord. Why would there be? You were correct. I do enjoy the pain of a Mudblood. It's just a shame we can't torture her."
"Yes, I suppose. I just prefer not to waste my time."
Severus nods. "I should have known. I apologize, Voldemort."
"Yes, well get it over with. I don't wish to stand here all day."
My breath catches. I stare at Severus, needing him to glance at me, so I can mouthe, "no, don't do this. Please." But he doesn't look at me. He keeps his eyes on poor, beautiful Hermione.
"Severus," Voldemort warns.
Snape aims his wand at Hermione.
I close my eyes.
