Out there
I was doing even more gardening things today, I had to water the plants and check for ripe fruit and veg.
I have been here for seven nights now, all they needed me to do was get the fruit and vegetables ready for eating.
The only bonus of what I do is that I can look up and watch the boys building. Occasionally Newt would catch my eye and smile at me.
Today he was on the other side and all I could see was Gally, who I'd forgiven for the killing a chicken incident, and Alby. I liked all the guys, they each had their own little quirks, but I did have a favourite line.
At the bottom was probably Alby because at first he seemed quite nice but after a while he became bossy and controlling. Out of work he can be great fun but he rarely lets us off work.
After Alby I'd say Gally. I have forgiven the chicken incident but the idea that that's what he finds funny... It's really off putting. Though he has got a great way of knowing when I get bored of gardening and he'll break Albys rules and come to sit with me claiming he got a splinter. Which for some reason, everyone seems to think that it's my job.
After Gally, in second place, is Minho. While he is a sarcastic pain in the arm (Alby won't let me swear but newt doesn't really listen, he has been saying "bloody" since he arrived apparently), Minho has a great sense of humour, whenever I hang out with him, my sides ache from laughing. His hair is one of my favourite things to pick up on. You see I was given some hair care products, Minho stole them and now has perfect hair. I later found him asking the box for more.
Obviously number one is newt. He... He is... He's just... Errg! How do you explain it? He's nice and funny and cute and caring and protective. He and I act like we've known each other years. He can be so funny one moment then seriously and protective the next.
I had finished my job for the day and walked over to help the boys. They were trying to lift a piece of wood but they couldn't get it up.
"Can I help?" I asked "yes" "no" "yes" "try" all chorused at once.
You can guess who said what, Newt and Gally both said yes, Alby said no and Minho told me to try to help. With three yes' I grabbed the end and helped put the plank on top. When it was secure Gally grabbed a few vines and wrapped them around the wood to hold it in place.
"I told you no. Why did you ignore me?" Alby demanded walking over to me. Here we go... "I heard three people say yes and only one no and I couldn't tell who said what." I told him knowing that my reply would be some form of punishment.
Sure enough I was given cleaning duty. I was to wash up the plates after I cooked and ate dinner.
I had to harvest the food, one of the boys (usually Gally) would get me the meat, I would get the water and usually make a stew. The boys loved stew, it was warm and easy to eat and no one was getting sick after eating now. Turns out that the boys couldn't cook.
Therefore all this became my job, cook, nurse, gardener and now cleaner too.
I was so angry I stormed off.
All I did was help! Why does Alby not understand that! He couldn't do it without my help yet he punishes me for doing so. This is why he's at the bottom of my list!
Newt ran up behind me. He stayed a few steps behind me which allowed me to decide where we went.
I ended up where I found myself most days. Sitting facing the entrance in the wall.
"What is out there?" I ask Newt. This made him sit next to me. "Alby says as long as we stay in pairs, he doesn't mind us going out. He suggested going early in the morning and coming back before the sun goes behind the walls." He told me looking into my eyes. He looked forwards "why do you have to test him, Rie?" He asked me, the tone in his voice said how stressed that he was.
I sighed "I'm fed up of being treated differently. You all go over there and I hear you talking where as, I'm stuck on my own. I may be a girl but I can still do the things that you can." I said realising how whining that sounded.
"I know you can. But Alby doesn't want you to. He thinks you're a girl that can't do anything without being injured. You are like a little sister to most of 'em. Cut him some slack. When you're ready come back over, okay?" He stood up and began to walk away but stopped before walking back, "tomorrow, if I get consent from Alby, how about we go out there?" He offered. I looked up and nodded enthusiastically. He laughed before walking over to the boys.
For a nice change newt helped me make stew and kept me company while I cleaned up. He tried to help but Alby told him off because it was my punishment not newts, he just kept me company.
"Alby said yes" he told me as soon as i finished. "Really?!?" I said overjoyed. He nodded smiling. "You and I have an early start, we should get to bed."
When I got to the sleeping area the walls closed as they did every night.
A small part of my mind thought about what newt said earlier. "You're like a little sister to most of 'em". most of them? Then who doesn't see me as a sister? Alby probably, he see's me as a slave.
I try to clear my head by thinking of positives: I finally get to see what's out there. I finally get some freedom and I get to spend the day with newt. How could anything get better? I sighed contently closing my eyes, drifting into a dreamless sleep.
Hi guys
two chapters within 24 hours? I have no idea how I did this. I am really happy that I have another person who commented yay!
I am also soooo happy that I managed to write over 1000 words in this chapter. That's 1000 words in about half an hour!!!
Just a quick thing, in the cast list, jenn Proske is listed as "Linda" I don't know why because Linda is not a character, I think I must have said Linda in place of Rie. Oops!
Really long authors note but I just wanted to say "Rie" is pronounced "Ree" as in maRIE cuRIE.
Thanks for reading
Alicia Clark
