9: Mother Dearest That Was Sent From Hell

The girl slapped a hand over her chest, breathing out of relief.

"Hello Y/n."

"Are you crazy L? How did you even get in?"

"Your window was open." the detective said bluntly

She looked over to the her window and sure enough, it was open. Her house didn't have a second floor so lucky for him, all he had to do was climb through.

She sighed and placed the brown paper bag she had in her hands on her table, "Do you need something or are you stalking me now?"

He looked at her, he really did miss her.

"Yesterday afternoon we received a tape from the second Kira postmarked on the 23rd. He said he had found Kira."

She rubbed her eyes and leaned back on the wall, " So you suspect Light and I since we were there on the 22nd don't you."

"You sound upset." he tiled his head, trying to read her expression.

"No shit sherlock." Y/n leaned off the wall, "I don't care if you suspect Light, actually I think you're right for suspecting him because not only does it all point to him, it matches his personality but the fact you can look me in my eyes after everything and tell me I could be a murderer makes me upset. I can't even send back soup at a restaurant."

"I do not suspect you. It just so happens that the evidence proves that it happened before the 22nd, you and Light were both there."

"Yeah and like 200 other people."

"Those people don't have connections like you and Light. I might have to keep a closer eye on you two." he puts his thumb on his lip, biting on his nail.

She scoffs, "You don't trust me to move independently, you don't trust me to take care of myself, you don't trust I can protect myself, you don't trust whenever I'm alone." L can see she annoyed and on the verge of tears, "Do you even trust me at all? "

"Yes, of course." he stood, pushing his hands in his pockets.

"Because it sure does seem like it doesn't it?" She pressed her lips in a line, then sighed," You know what, you win. Put cameras back up in my house, keep your eye on me. Hell, if you want you can handcuff me to you. Do whatever you want so you can ensure I am not a psychopath."

With that she turned around to walk away.

"Lawliet."

Y/n stopped and looked at him, furrowing her eyebrows, "What the hell is a Lawliet?"

"That is my name."

He knew it was stupid and reckless to tell her that, it wasn't like him to do so at all. L just didn't want her to leave again.

He couldn't take it.

"I-Is this..um, is this a test or something because I wasn't prepared for that."

"It is not. I trust you to hold on to the one thing that is keeping me alive."

"You realize that was stupid of you."

"I know, it just came out." the detective mumbled, following it up with a sigh

Y/n walked up to him and hugged him, wrapping her arms around his torso.

L straightened his posture for a quick second, being surprised by this type of contact.

He relaxed into it and held Y/n, hoping she wouldn't let go.

"I'm sorry I was so hard on you." she said into his chest.

"I'm sorry too, I didn't mean to make you feel like I didn't believe in you. Believe it or not this is all new to me."

She laughed, "Really? Absolutely couldn't tell."

Y/n lifted her head off him and looked up at him, their hands still on each other.

They gazed into each other's eyes. The two hadn't done that in a while.

"I hate to bring this up right now but concerning the last time we had a bit of a predicament-"

"I will be cautious when it comes to my safety." Ryuzaki cuts her off

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Y/n heard the sound of keys making noise in the distance, her eyes widen.

"Oh no." She whispered as she let go of L

"What's wrong?"

"That's my mother, you have to go. If she found out a guy was here while she was at work she'll throw a tantrum." Y/n said in a hurry, gently pushing him to the way he got in the first place.

"You're 19."

"You think she gives a damn? That woman will kill me then kill you."

He climbed out, "I'll see you tomorrow." she smiled.

L gave a nod in response and left.

Not to long after Mrs. Kitamura walked in

"Come and see what I bought." She said excitedly. Y/n followed her mom into the kitchen and saw what she was so excited about

"You bought a coffeemaker?" Y/n sighed at her mother.

"I'll test it in the morning, right now I have to prepare dinner. Your father will be home any minute now." Her mom said whilst taking pots out of the cupboard under the kitchen sink.

There were three knocks on the door.

Y/n went to open the door only to see the guy she had just ran out of her house.

"What are you doing?" She whisper shouted.

"I think one of my lollipops fell out in your room." The man with the terrible posture scratched his head.

"Y/n who is at the door!" they heard her mother yell in the kitchen.

"You're risking my life for a lollipop?"

"It was strawberry flavor." he said innocently

"Y/n, I asked who was at the do-" Mrs. Kitamura appeared from behind Y/n and stopped herself when she saw L, "Hi."

She looked back at her mother who wore a smile.

This can't be good Y/n thought.

"Hello Mrs. Kitamura, pleasure to meet you." he bowed.

"Quite the gentleman." She laughed, "Y/n is this your boyfriend?"

"Yes I am." L smiled.

"Wait what?"

Y/n was ignored, "Well come on in!" She beamed. Y/n stood there processing what happened in that short time span.

Mrs. Kitamura led L into the dining which was next to kitchen. He took a seat next to Y/n in his crouched position

Her mother whispered, "Why does he sit like that?"

"If he were to sit normally his deductive skills would decrease by 40 %"

"Ah, I see."

She took a seat across from the 'couple'

"What's your name, dear."

"It's Ryuzaki ma'am."

Y/n held in her laugh, she was surprised how much he was sucking up to her. To be fair that's what you would have to do if you wanted her approval.

"So how did you two meet?"

"Actually mom." she said immediately after, " He's...um, he's the one I told you about...um, at the store a couple months ago." Y/n rubbed the back of her neck.

Ryuzaki was taken back.

She had talked about me? L held back a smile

He looked at her get all nervous and he was all for it.

"Right, yes. Will you stay for dinner?"

"He has wor-"

"I would love to."

She glared at him

From what L gathered from Y/n's mother, she loved a lavish lifestyle and wants Y/n to have the same, whether that will benefit her or daughter is still unknown but he was leaning more towards herself.

Like those parents who force their kids to marry a rich person so they could live a better lifestyle and not caring what their child had to say about it.

There was nothing wrong in wanting success for your children but punishing them for not living out your expectation is too much.

L knew she was one of those.

Knowing Y/n has a successful significant other would be music to her ears, knowing she had someone to provide for her daughter and maybe she'll get some things out of it as well

Hopefully she would stop giving the poor girl a hard time.

"Fantastic!" She beamed, "I'll go get started on dinner, it won't take long."

She had never seen her mother so nice.

She left the dining room, leaving the two.

Y/n gently hit his arm, gaining his attention, "What are you doing?"

He shift in his seat, nearing closer to her, "Trust me Y/n. I know what I'm doing,"'

She leaned back in her seat and folded her arms, "Fine but you have more important things to do than to deal with that maniac," She leaned closer to L and said softly." Like seriously, she hasn't smiled that much since she saw a mini fridge on sale. It scares me."

"It is quite alright, I had to meet them sooner or later." He turned his head to face the candle in the middle of the table, he picked it up with his pointer and thumb finger.

"You did? Is it for the investigation?"

"No." he looked at the red candle, fascinated by it. It felt weird on his fingers as he thought it was quite slippery.

Before Y/n opened her mouth, Mr. Kitamura walked through the door.

"Could this get any better?" She muttered. L smiled, reassuring her it as okay.

Mr and Mrs. Kitamura entered the dining room.

"Hunny, This is Ryuzaki, Y/n's boyfriend."

Y/n watched as L got up and shook his hand with again, his pointer and thumb finger.

Kitamura's head furrowed his eyebrows, "Pleased to meet you."

"Likewise Mr. Kitamura."

He looked at the slouched man as he sat next to his step daughter.

"Interesting guy you have there Y/n." His voice deep and tired.

She rubbed the bridge of her nose, " Oh yeah, I know."

Kitamura left and once he came back, dinner was prepared and laid out on the table.

"I hope you like sushi."

"That is fine Mrs. Kitamura, Thank you." L nodded.

Mr. Kitamura came out with a bottle of wine.

Y/n saw that bottle in the kitchen for months and even for other guests they told her not to open it, "I thought we were saving that for when the president came over."

L smiled at her sarcasm.

She tugged on the sleeve of the detective's sweater, "You want me to make you coffee or something? I know you don't drink that."

"That would be great. Remember to put-"

"7 cubes of sugar."

He was surprised she knew.

She immediately got up and joined her mother in the kitchen who was preparing glasses. She filed the kettle with water.

"You can take one glass out Ma, he doesn't drink wine."

"Well what does he drink?"

"Coffee."

"Coffee?"

"Ryuzaki drinks coffee with everything." Y/n laughs.

Her mom walked closer to her, "So tell me, is he rich?"

Y/n's head jerked backwards, "Excuse me?"

"I'm not having my daughter date someone who can't provide for her."

"Because that's the most important thing?"

Mrs. Kitamura grew annoyed and Y/n saw that, "Answer the question."

She didn't know what to say. She didn't care if he had or not but just to please her mother, "He is."

Then she did the expected. She hugged her child in excitement. Y/n eyes widen.

Am I dreaming or something?

"I'm proud of you, dear."

"W..wa..wh.." She couldn't even formulate words.

"Come on darling, make the coffee and let's join them."

Y/n did so and made it, making sure to put 7 cubes of sugar and stirred. Y/n still couldn't believe what just happened and her face said it all.

She took a seat next to Ryuzaki and gave him his coffee.

"Thank you Y/n" he looked at her and she seemed off "Are you okay?"

She cleared her throat and brought her head by his ear, making L tense, in a good way, "She..um, she h-hugged me. I have no idea why she did that,"

L laughed softly, "You should see your face."

L was relieved if he was being honest, his analysis of her mother was correct.

Y/n laughed and pushed him slightly, "Whatever."

Ryuzaki had come from watching this family eat dinner to eating dinner with them. It was unreal he was watching them without the means of cameras.

Mrs. Kitamura handed out the chopsticks and Y/n mentally face palmed.

"I think I'll just use a fork."

Kitamura took a couple of the sushi off the platter and onto his plate, "How come Y/n?"

Her mother laughed, "Still don't know how to use chopsticks?"

"Oh," Ryuzaki said with a mouth full sushi, when he finished he continued, "I will teach you. It is quite easy."

He took one of the chopsticks and held her hand, placing it in her dominant hand, "Hold this one like you're holding a pencil."

She fixed it, waiting for him to tell her what to do next, " Then you hold this one between your thumb and forefinger."

He fixed her hands the way she should. She couldn't help but smile and look at him as he concentrated on fixing her fingers. Her cheeks heated up intensely.

"And that's it."

For the first time L looked up and saw her beautiful e/c eyes already on him.

She tilted her head and placed a hand on his cheek. His head jerked back slightly, not opposing to what she was doing though.

Y/n took her thumb and wiped under his eye.

"You had an eyelash on your cheek." she giggled.

He placed his hand overs hers that was still on L's face, Y/n noticed his cheeks turned a cute shade of pink.

The two forgot about the two adults in the room with them, they came to that realization at the same time and turned to look at them.

Mr. Kitamura was too busy chowing down on his food like he hadn't eaten in days and Mrs. Kitamura looked at them with awe in her eyes.

Y/n cleared her throat and went back to her chopsticks, fixing it as how L showed her.

"So Ryuzaki, what do you do for a living?" Y/n's mother asked followed by taking a bite of her sushi.

"I am a detective."

This caught Kitamura's attention, "You are?"

"Yes," Y/n said hastily, "In England. He's here on vacation."

The last thing she needed was her parents figuring out he was involved in the Kira case.

"You interested in the Kira case son?"

"I am but as Y/n said I am on vacation and I am not allowed to work." He picked up the sushi and placed it in his mouth in one quick motion.

How does he do that? she wondered

She fumbled with the food on her plate. Eventually she got one with the chopsticks, she was internally proud until it fell back on her plate.

"You have to be kidding me." she sighed

L took the piece she had trouble with and picked it up himself only to bring it up to her mouth.

Y/n grinned at his actions, she opened her mouth and he fed her.

"I'm telling you." Mrs. Kitamura laughed causing the two's eyes to lay upon her, "I'm so glad Y/n finally found a guy to provide for her," Y/n lips pressed into a thin line as she raised her glass of wine to her lips. She was going to need a shit ton if she was going to make it out of tonight sane, " When I found out my daughter was doing drugs I was sure she was going to end up homeless."

Y/n choked on her drink and coughed slightly, she looked at the man beside her who returned a confused and concerned gaze

"For the millionth time I wasn't doing drugs, Ma." she smiled and said as politely as she could.

She hated the fact her mother brought that up with L in the room.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true, you were lied too." Y/n drank her glass clean and immediately got the bottle to pour more.

"Whatever, the past is in the past." she chuckled, "I'm just glad you didn't end up like your father."

Y/n got froze when she heard those words, she exhaled harshly through her nose, "What is that supposed to mean?"

L and Kitamura left it up to the ladies to sort this one out.

"He was poor and struggling Y/n. You don't want to end up like that now do you?" Her mother took a sip from her glass and had the audacity to continue, "I guess not considering you're with a rich guy, I raised you well."

Y/n scoffed, "I rather be like my father than be like you. Dad worked hard to make sure I had everything and made sure I was more than happy. Maybe you should take notes." she gulped the rest of her drink and poured more.

"Excuse me?"

"I said you should take notes." she repeated louder, "I have no idea why you are all about this rich lifestyle. That doesn't matter to me so I'm not going to pursue that because you want me to. If I'm with someone is because they treat me better than you, not because I look at what's in his pockets. Is that why you married him?"

She nodded over to Kitamura.

"Y/n L/n I will not have you talk to me in that manner in my house!" She stood, banging her hands on the table.

Y/n stood as well, "You wanna go outside and talk this out then? Because this conversation is happening whether you like it or not."

"You are an evil child-"

"I am my mothers daughter." she interrupted, "You did everything you can to mentally abuse me and make my life a living hell. You needed someone to yell at and be bitter with and you chose me."

"I only yell because you act stupid and you're disgusting. I have no idea why he puts up with you and your bullshit! And why do you allow him to be so weird? I mean just look at him! " Mrs. Kitamura pointed at the crouched man next to her who just looked the two, mostly Y/n.

He wanted to take Y/n away but it wasn't his place to do anything at the moment.

Y/n was calm but that she was far from that now, "Leave Ryuzaki out of this! Don't talk if you don't know half of it!" she angrily yelled, "Stop being bitter with everyone one around you and accept you were wrong for once in your life!"

Mrs. Kitamura had nothing to say, she couldn't defend herself anymore, "You've always hated me and my father, for what reason I don't know and I'm tired of it. How dare you speak ill of my father?" Y/n said in a calmer manner.

"Well you're the one who killed him." Her mother folded her arms and watched the tears form in her daughter's eyes.

Her heart dropped to her stomach.

"You take that back." she said in a quavering voice.

"We both know it, you killed the one person who you claimed cared about you."

With tears running down her cheeks she managed to find the words, "You are going to rot in hell and I hope God has mercy on your soul because I won't."

With that Y/n left heading straight to her room. Ryuzaki immediately following after her.

Once in her room she let it all out, immediately bursting into tears, not to long Ryuzaki entered.

"I'm sorry you had to witness that. I'm so sorry."

He pulled her into a hug and she cried into his shoulder once again, "You have nothing to apologize for. I m proud of you for sticking up for yourself Y/n."

"Thank you." she said in his shoulder.

"None of those things she said was true." he reassured, passing his hand up and down her back, "I assure you I will be here when you need me."

She leaned of his shoulder, hands still on each other and Y/n looked in his dark eyes. With his thumb he wiped her tears, she leaned into his touch.

"I'm sure you're wondering about the drugs bit." She laughed nervously.

"You don't have to get into that now."

She took both her hands and put them on his shoulders and sat him on her bed. She sat opposite L.

Ryuzaki fixed himself in his usual position.

She placed her hand on his knee, feeling the rough fabric that covered it.

She drew imaginary circles on his knee with her finger.

Y/n cleared her throat "After my dad died I moved here, I was in the same high school as Light. I didn't care about grades so I didn't put any effort.I put my effort in reading, music, sports and stuff like that. I ended up with a 65% average all throughout. My mother didn't like that so we fought all the time because of it. If it's anything it made me want to not do it even more. I met Light months after I moved. We became close then found out our parents worked together so we got even closer. After a while he drifted away because of school work and I got new friends."

Y/n couldn't look L in his eyes, she was too embarrassed but L couldn't care less about all those things. He still couldn't stand being away from her. It didn't change anything

She continued, "He got jealous so he made a rumor I was on drugs. That rumor made it to the school's principal which then made its way to my mother. She insisted it was true no matter how much I denied it. Because she thought I was doing drugs and plus my bad grades she thought I was a lost cause so she took me out of school. I didn't get to finish high school and with that drug record I supposedly had, I couldn't get into university."

After a while of silence she lifted her head up and Ryuzaki studied her.

"Light really is an idiot isn't he?"

This made her laugh, "You can say that again."

"Y/n?"

"Yes?"

"Pack your things, you're coming with me,"

She tilted her head at the detective, "What?"

"You're going to be living with me now, I don't want you here."

"Are you sure?"

He took a hold her of her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, "You're going to be okay Y/n." he smiled at the girl, "I'll make sure of it."
