8: Apple For Your Thoughts?
Y/n hadn't seen the task force in a couple days.
L changed hotels the day after and hadn't reached out to her since their small argument. She went out for a while, just to clear her head.
She found herself in front of the university her mom hoped she would've gone to.
Part of her felt terrible that she had let her mother down, the other part knew it wasn't her fault she couldn't turn that expectation into reality.
"Why am I even here?" she sighed.
Y/n turned around to head back home.
"Y/n!"
She stopped in her tracks and turned around. Light ran up to her, "What are you doing here?" he panted.
"I..." The girl exhaled harshly, "I have no idea."
Light looked at her, she didn't look all that well.
"I haven't seen you since L moved hotels, he's been asking for you."
"Oh." she cleared her throat, " He has?"
"Everyone has,"
"I haven't been feeling all that great, think I could be coming down with something." she lied.
"You do look terrible."
She lips pressed together, "Thanks, means a lot."
Light stepped back and Y/n watched confusingly as he did so, "It's not contagious is it?"
"I'm leaning more on saying yes if it'll make you step further away from me."
He laughed ,"I'll let them know, okay?" Light placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Thanks."
He turned to walk away when she grabbed his arm, he stopped immediately, "Do you mind telling me where you guys are in the investigation?"
"Sure, there's a cafe right there," He nodded over to the right of the university, " We can go there and I'll tell you everything."
Light led her the a small cafe, it wasn't all that crowded. She took a seat by a table far from the other people inside
"Just one second."
He went to order a drink which she assumed was for himself but was surprised when he came back with two.
He sat one in front of her and stole the seat opposite the slouching girl.
It was her favorite drink that she always ordered in any cafe she visited.
"Thanks." she murmured.
"I'll spare you the boring details." he started, taking a sip of his coffee, " When we made the tape pretending to be Kira, we requested that he stop killing aimlessly."
"Good, knowing the second Kira they would obey the original."
He nodded firmly, "We received a diary from the second Kira yesterday however, it more or less says he wants to meet Kira at the home game."
Y/n tilted her head, "Is he stupid?"
He laughed, "L says that we could broadcast the diary, announce the cancellation of the game and install more security cameras at the Tokyo dome. We already went to Aoyama and looked out for people with note books. All that's left are the clothing stores in Shibuya."
Y/n leaned back, "Wow, it is a lot, isn't?"
Light chuckles, "It sure is."
"It seems like you guys have everything in control, there is no need for me."
The brown haired boy knitted his eyebrows together, "Are you kidding? Y/n we need you, stop being so silly."
"It's just I can't-"
"Y/n please, you should go to Shibuya for the sake investigation. You look like you'd be there anyway."
If she was being honest, she didn't know how to feel about anything anymore.
She wanted to help but felt like she didn't belong there.
"I'll think bout it." she responded softly.
"Matsuda and I leave around 8 a.m. I hope to see you there." Light said sternly.
She sighed and looked at him, " I'll think about it."
"Fine." he brings the mug to his lips to set it back down, "Does this mean you don't hate me anymore?"
She laughed, "I don't hate you Light. I don't like you."
"There's a difference?"
"There's a big difference."
======================================
The next day rolled around in no time and Y/n gave it some thought.
She put on a casual dress, one you would wear in a house party. She slipped on a pair of shoes and wore the jacket L had given her.
She really did miss him.
She walked to a familiar looking house and knocked on the door. The door had opened, the woman who had done so immediately smiled once her eyes were laid upon her.
"Y/n, it's been so long. Come in! Come in!"
"Hi Mrs. Yagami, it's great to see you again. You look amazing."
"Oh stop it dear," she laughed, "You look beautiful. I haven't seen you in a dress ever."
"There's a first time for everything." Y/n smiled widely, " Please tell me Light didn't leave already."
"You're going with him to Shibuya?"
Y/n nodded.
"That's wonderful! I can't remember the last time you two went out," Mrs. Yagami looked up at the young woman before her, "He left to go buy some things I sent him out for, he should be back."
There was silence for a bit, she looked around. It hadn't changed a bit.
The same sofa around the TV, the same pictures on the shelves, the same wooden table and chairs, the same simple kitchen.
"Where's little Sayu? I haven't seen her in forever."
"She's at a friend's house, I will tell her you stopped by and asked for her." the short haired woman beamed.
"Thanks," Y/n felt weird coming back here. One point in time when she was here, she never wanted to leave, now it feels like she could just go home, " If you don't mind I'd like to use the bathroom."
"Oh yes of course dear."
She walked up the stairs and was about to enter the bathroom but realized Light's door that was further down the hallway was open.
She grinned.
"I suppose a look through wouldn't hurt."
She slipped through the crack of the door, making sure it didn't move from its place.
Everything seemed to be in order. He didn't have much to go through.
Her eyes found a couple drawers.
Before she went through the drawers her eyes found a pen. It was hers. Y/n wondered why on earth he had this.
She remembered the bite marks on the cover. Her bite marks
She took it and proceeded to go through the bottom drawer.
"A whole bunch of nothing." Y/n groaned. She refused to believe Light lived a unbelievably boring life with nothing to hide but if he were to hide something, he'd hide it good.
She knew that.
She pulled the middle.
Nothing.
The top had a book labelled diary. Without moving the book she opened it. It didn't have much in it. Just a couple of notes and reminders.
She furrowed her eyebrows.
This is too obvious she thought
The pen she took slipped out of her hand and rolled under the small gap under the drawers.
Crap
Y/n got to the ground and stretched for it, causing her head to tilt up. She got it but noticed a hole at the bottom that drawer.
It's too big for a pin to go through, Too small for the tip of a pen or pencil.
She looked at the pen and it clicked. Y/n screwed the top of that pen and got the ink.
She took his 'diary' out
She pushed the tube of ink through and as she suspected, it was the perfect fit. The bottom of that drawer lifted up to reveal a book.
She mentally remembered how the book was placed and picked it up.
"Death note?" Y/n thought out loud.
Once it was open, there were rules written. She read as much as she could.
The human's name that is written in the note shall die.
If the cause of death is written within the next 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.
If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.
One must know the face of the person whose name is written down for there to be an effect.
Y/n's breathing rapidly got faster and heavier,
"L was right." was what she managed to say.
She heard a faint door close and talking down the stairs.
"That's Light's voice." she panicked
She put back the book exactly how she found it, put the bottom back and placed his diary exactly how he left it.
Y/n closed the drawer and slipped the ink back in the pen and put it back.
Without sparing a second she squeezed through the door's opening, making sure it didn't move and ran into the bathroom.
She took a couple seconds for her heart rate to slow down.
Light is Kira, huh?
She wasn't completely sure since she didn't get to see what was written in it
She heard walking up the stairs and took the opportunity to flush and wash her hands to act like she had been using the bathroom the entire time.
Once she walked out she bumped into the killer himself.
Only he wasn't alone.
Her breath hitched but she knew it was important that she didn't draw attention to herself
This tall weird looking thing hovered behind him. It had spiked hair, his eyes were big and circled and had black old looking wings.
It wore one earring, had a skull on his belt and his mouth was shaped like he was always smiling widely and creepily.
It had a puck style going on.
"Y/n?"
"Don't act so surprised, I'm here to go to Shibuya." She kept her composure, " I hope you're not going dressed like that."
The thing behind him laughed.
"I'm beginning to like her more Light."
It talked too? Y/n mentally yelled.
His voice was raspy and rough like sandpaper.
Light looked down at what he was wearing, "I was actually planning on wearing this."
She snorted, "At least you'll take the attention off me."
The thing laughed again.
Light rolled his eyes, "I'll change, happy?"
"Very."
"Light, give me an apple. I feel my withdrawal symptoms kicking in." It complained but Light tried his best to ignore his presence.
Light went into his room.
"Hey." she whispered to it.
"You can see me?"
"What are you?" She asked really softly.
"I am a shinigami kid, I am required to follow this idiot."
"Do you have a name shinigami?"
"Ryuk,"
"Well Ryuk, Pleasure to meet you."
"Same here kid." He looked at her, not looking away which made her fidget.
"Do you have to follow him because of the book?"
He laughed, "Yes. I dropped my book in the human world and he was the first to pick it up. I'm just here spectating until he forfeits ownership or dies."
"Are there more of...you on earth?" she whispered.
It was important she talked quietly.
"There is one more here, following someone."
The second Kira she thought
She cleared her throat and looked at Ryuk, "Is Light Kira? "
"You didn't see what was written in the book, didn't you?" she shook her head no, "Where's the fun in telling?"
It's not like she could have him arrested for with-holding verbal evidence
She was worried because of how he was spilling information easily which meats he most likely will tell Light about her.
"Will you tell Light about me?"
"No, I wont."
She sighed out of relief but then he opened his mouth again.
"If he asks however, that's a different story." he laughed which annoyed her
She had to think quickly shut him up.
Then she had it.
"You like apples don't you?"
He perked up, "Apples?"
"I will provide you with a crate of apples a week if you keep your shinigami mouth shut. I will provide two crates whenever you help me."
"Help?" He didn't like the sound of that.
"More or less whenever I have questions or I need your help, it won't be much I promise." She gulped really hard, hoping he would consider her deal, "Do we have a deal?"
He chuckled for a bit, "Yeah we have a deal."
Y/n breathe out of relief, " How do I know you won't hold up you end of this bargain."
"I'd chose apples over Light any day. A shinigami keeps his word."
She nodded.
As if on cue, Light came out dressed.
"Better?"
"I could live with it."
They met up with Matsuda in Shibuya and Y/n face palmed at how many people there were.
The three walked around with a bunch of people that Light had invited.
"The last thing I'd expect him to be was popular." she muttered to Matsuda.
Nothing much was done other than walking around looking at people, there was so much people they had to look at they barely spoke to one another.
Y/n hadn't been in a clothing store in months, she barely went shopping anyway.
It hadn't been too long when she started feeling light-headed again. She knew what was happening, that familiar feeling.
She tugged on Matsuda's sleeve, his attention quickly averted to her
"Matsui, I have low blood sugar, I need..I need..um." Y/n couldn't even think straight, she closed her eyes tightly to drain the movement around her.
Matsuda immediately pulled out a couple lollipops from his pockets and handed her two.
Once she took off the wrapper and put it in her mouth, she placed a hand on his shoulder laughed, "Thank you. You're a life saver."
"You should thank Ryuzaki, he's the one who told me to carry these for you in case you needed it."
Y/n stayed quiet, not sure what to say to that
"We're trailing behind we should-"
"Yes of course, after you Y/n."
After a full day of observing people, everyone was tired.
For the first time Y/n was happy to go home.
Not even two days passed, she went out to the store to buy some sweets for herself
She sighed, taking off her jacket. She walked to her room, despite it being a bit dark she saw a figure on her bed which made her jump.
Y/n quickly turned on the lights as her breath hitched.
