4: Reaper of Death? Is that You?
Y/n was helping her mom carry out the groceries from the car into the kitchen.
Whilst her mom took it out of the brown paper bag, she packed them on to the shelves and cupboards.
She looked the box that was on the counter and sighed, "You bought a toaster oven, Ma? We already have one."
Her mom, still taking items out of the bag, shrugged and said, "It was on sale."
"You went to a grocery though...how did you-" Y/n stopped herself.
"There was an appliance section."
Y/n took some cans and placed them on the shelf.
"You're not going there alone anymore, next thing there's another sale and you come back with a stove or a fridge."
This earned a laugh from her mom.
Y/n placed some bottles in the fridge vertically. Her mom tapped her head, "What are you? Stupid? Do it like this."
Mrs. Kitamura laid them horizontally, only to find out wasn't working out, leaving her no choice but to place it back how her daughter had it.
Once finished Y/n started to feel dizzy. She had thought it must have been from standing too long so she went in her room to sit.
That wasn't working either.
Some water should be good she thought.
As she stood, she got a painful head rush and fell to the floor being consumed by darkness immediately.
===================
Y/n woke up, fluttered her eyes because of the bright light.
Had I died? She wondered About damn time.
Her vision was blurry, but she could tell she was at the hospital.
She turned her head to see two figures beside her. Y/n closed her eyes tightly and rubbed them. She felt terrible, weak and fragile- like if she moved, she'd break piece of herself.
Once her eyes had opened, she finally saw the faces of the mysterious figures and smiled.
"What a surprise."
L shoved his hands in his pockets shyly.
Her eyes then moved to the man besides him.
"Mr. Yagami, good to see you. It's been a minute." Y/n addressed politely.
He smiled, "Hello dear, how are you feeling? " Pushing his glasses up more on the bridge of his nose.
"I'm feeling so good I feel like I can run in the Olympics." Y/n tried to push herself to sit up, but it was immense pain.
Ryuzaki held her hand and helped her to sit.
Mr. Yagami's cellphone rang, "If you would excuse me."
They both nodded and he left.
"I would like to thank you." she paused for a second, "Detective."
He looked taken back.
"For calling the ambulance."
He felt like his heart stopped for a quick second.
"How did you know?"
"Well, I know the NPA and the people who work there like the back of my hand, since Mr. Yagami is head of the investigation and you're here with him and I have never seen you before, it led me to believe that you're the detective that worked with him."
She let out a breathless laugh before continuing,"Mr. Yagami lives for his work and I know he doesn't do anything else really. Also, last time I saw you, you got a call from Soichiro. I always call him Mr. Yagami so I totally forgot his first name. To be fair I did forget he had a first name to begin with."
The detective was impressed. She had managed to find out his identity.
"How did you know I was the one who called the ambulance?"
She figured out the most she can do was to answer his questions.
"Well, a couple days ago I stopped at Kitamura's office when I heard a pretty interesting conversation, half of one anyway."
-FLASHBACK-
"Take this to your father's office, he forgot it this morning." Mrs. Kitamura demanded.
She took the bag and sighed, "He is not my father but go on I guess." she muttered under her breath.
Without hesitating, she was out the door.
The building wasn't that far, and she could really use a walk.
Y/n breath in the fresh air, feeling relaxed which she hadn't felt in a long while
There weren't many people out, it was a Tuesday at 3pm. Most people were at work or was at home, making it not busy.
She approached the familiar building.
"Hi Y/n, good to see you. How have you been?" The receptionist asked.
She greeted him with a smile, "Hey Uniko. I've been good. How are you and the family?"
"We are doing well, Sai just started school." he beamed proudly.
The young female gasped and slapped a hand over her heart, "That's fabulous! Tell them I said hi and tell little Sai that I'm happy she's becoming a big girl now."
The man who was in his late 20s laughed, "I definitely will Y/n. I'm assuming you're here to see Mr. Kitamura."
Y/n nodded, "Is he available? "
"He is, you know where to go." he said politely.
She waved him off, walking to his office.
"He what?!" Mr. Kitamura yelled, causing her to jump. She had never heard him yell before.
She stood and pressed her ear against his office door to hear better.
She couldn't hear anyone else so assumed he was talking on the phone which means there was no way for her to hear what the other person was saying.
"I am the Deputy Director! I have a right to know!"
There was silence
"L put cameras in our house?! Why does he suspect us?"
...
"I see, do what you must."
He seemed to be calmer now.
Kitamura scoffed "For the greatest detective in the world he does seem to go against the law."
-END-
"So, you were eavesdropping?"
"You're one to be talking about eavesdropping, you have cameras in my house detective."
He slipped a hand out of one of his pockets and rubbed the back of his neck.
Y/n restrained a smile, "I'm not even going to ask what happened when I went into the bathroom or took a shower."
"I am truly sorry, but we had too for the sake of the investigation."
She laughed at how nervous he had become, "Relax detective, it's not like I'm going to sue you."
She cleared her throat, satisfied with the amount of teasing she had done and continued, " Later that day I did my research and did pray the internet had some information about the world's greatest detective. A face and name were not public but his brilliance sure was."
She shifted slightly, grunting at the pain, "Because of privacy reasons I assumed that only you and probably one other would look at the footage."
"Incredible." L said to himself, studying her, "It is truly amazing that you figured out so much."
Y/n giggled, "You're giving me to much credit."
"And you underestimate yourself, why is that?" L pulled the chair from the corner of the room and pulled it as close to her as he can, before sitting in his unusually usual crouched position.
Her smile grew, "I adore the way you sit. "
He tilted his head, no one has ever thought so, "You do?"
"Yes." she giggled once again. She found herself doing that a lot around him. "Anyways I just never thought I was all the smart. My mom always called me and my ways disgusting, dumb, stupid so many times that I started to believe it."
She looked down at her lap.
"You are none of those things, Y/n. You are intelligent. "
"It means a lot coming from you."
"Why is that? Is it because I am a detective so it means it must be true?"
Y/n shook her head, "Nope. Because you're a nice person. Yeah, you're a little odd but the odd ones are the best."
L was again taken back. He felt so...appreciated
Like he was more than emotionless insomniac who only cared about work that people saw him as.
He felt happier and warm when she was around
He felt as if he could be vulnerable.
Y/n closed her eyes tightly, "That reminds me." she cleared her throat, " Where are my parents?"
"It is quite late, so I believe they are home. They were here earlier."
"Yeah, just to see if I was alive or not then they just dipped." she rolled her eyes.
Mr. Yagami came in, "Ryuzaki, Can I see you for a moment?"
He smiled at the girl, "If you don't mind." his voice softer than it was.
"No not all, go."
When he was with Mr. Yagami he returned to that serious detective man with the bad posture.
Mr. Yagami handed him the cellphone, immediately reminding him he had his off for the moment being.
"Yes?"
"Ryuzaki." the man said over the phone, "I took the security cameras and wiretaps from both households. I will be preparing the tapes so you can view them when you get back."
"Thank you, Watari. Is there anything else?" He held the phone tighter with his two fingers so he can ensure it doesn't fall.
"No, not for the time being."
"Alright, bye."
"Bye."
The call was immediately ended, and Mr. Yagami's phone was returned to him.
Both men walked back to Y/n's room to discover she was gone.
A panic broke out between the two.
"Ryuzaki, your jacket is gone!"
"She must have taken it." he said, "You look from this floor below and I will look from this floor go up. She could not have gone far." he stated in a slight hurry.
He looked at all the floors he told Yagami he would check.
No luck.
He spotted a door he hadn't checked at the end of a hallway.
It was a metal door, he opened it and walked up a few stairs only to be met with another metal door.
L opened it and got a face full of breeze. It was the rooftop.
There was nothing up there, so he saw a figure sitting on the edge wearing a familiar jacket of his.
"You're not going to jump, are you?" this startled her a bit but saw the familiar face, "I hope not because I enjoy your company. "
This earned a laugh from her, "No I just needed to get out. Sorry."
He stole a seat next to her, "How did you even get past the nurses."
He looked ahead. Cool wind blowing in their faces. The city lights were beautiful in the dark of the night.
There was a highway in the distance, cars driving up and down, the brightness of the car lights shinning on the road, they heard when each cars passed.
People bustled outside the hospital, there were food carts along the way where people stopped at.
Stars were plastered all about the sky and the full moon was peering out of the scattered clouds.
"There was a supply closet and it had scrubs, so I put on the pants and kidnapped your jacket."
L smiled a bit, looking at the way she looked in the moonlight, "I told you; you are smart."
Silence filled for a moment, L still looking at her. Y/n felt his gaze, but it wasn't unsettling. It was comforting... his, some would call creepy, gaze and his presence.
"The nurse said I have low blood sugar, so I need to eat more sugary things. Apparently, my body lacks it really badly, so I need to eat a shit ton daily."
"It's because you don't eat, why is that?"
She never thought she would see the day where someone cared.
"I think I have already bored you with enough with my life." she laughed nervously.
"No." She looked at him to meet his dark eyes already on her. She looked at him admiring everything about him. His smooth skin, hair, lips, even the dark areas under his eyes, "You don't bore me, I want to know everything about you, providing you are comfortable of course."
Her lips curved upwards a bit but to L's displeasure, they went back down, "Ever since my dad died, I lost the ability to work up an appetite. "
"I am terribly sorry." he said softly.
"Heh, don't be. You're not the one who killed him." She looked straight ahead, his eyes looking at hers wander the scenery.
"If you don't mind my asking, who did?"
"Me." she sighed, "I killed him."
