2: Sweet Coincidences And Home Sweet Home
The greatest detective in the world.
L
Ryuzaki
Using his skills, he had been able to get five members from the Japanese police and trusted them to an extent since they were risking their lives.
With that being said, he finally revealed himself to the task force.
He had to in order to gain their trust, after all he had requested that the police be investigated since Kira had been able to get his hands on some classified files.
Twelve FBI agents were sent to Japan to investigate potential suspects
All of them killed.
L was now explaining to them his train of thought and how he come to conclude that Kira had been experimenting for a couple days before killing said agents.
Kira needed to see how much control he had over his victims before they die.
He then waited a couple days for those agents to tail other people so when he killed all twelve agents.
Which meant Kira was most likely someone one of the agents were investigating. Kira felt threatened.
By killing randomly, he was able to conceal which agent file he had seen and been in contact with. He had to have been in contact with one to get information on the rest.
Whilst listening to the slouched man on the sofa explain his thoughts on the case, the team got riled up and got a sudden burst of motivation.
It's as how L likes to put it 'Justice will prevail.'
Meanwhile Y/n was walking home from work. Nothing new.
She had hoped the sleep deprived man would stop by, after all it has been a few days.
Little did she know he had thought of it.
Y/n assumed that he wasn't from around here, making it a one-time meet.
She walked home, kicking a stone to ease her boredom. It's not like she had anything waiting for her at home, anything exciting.
She bumped into someone, immediately apologizing. When she had looked at the figure before her, she scoffed.
"I'm sorry I didn't bump into you harder."
"Y/n, always a pleasure." The figure said sarcastically
The nineteen year-old reluctantly faced the person she despised, "Yes Yagami, it's always a pleasure to get the desire to remove my own eyeballs when I Iook at you." she folded her arms.
Light Yagami had a pretty boy face. Defined features, cute brown eyes, straight and brown hair that turned a golden brown under the sun.
"You're still mad at me, huh?"
"Listen Lightbulb, you ask me that every time you see me, get a clue. I don't have the time to deal with you right now."
She walked around Light Yagami, the idiot that always seemed to wear dress clothes like he was going to work despite him being almost 18 and in school.
"We both know you have nothing better to do." he smirked, knowing the right buttons to press to get a reaction out of her.
The h/c haired girl stopped in her tracks and turned around slowly.
She walked really close to him, " Don't you have to go to the hospital?"
He furrowed his eyebrows at her, his eyes trailing her up and down, "What?" he remarked, clearly confused where she was going with this, " No, I don't."
Yagami noticed her fists clenching, "Well I'll gladly put you there."
Truth is he didn't really have a problem with Y/n, she on the other hand had a major issue with him. He doesn't stress over it though because he loves the banter.
Being the Chief of the NPA and the deputy Director's children the two were expected to get along. They did, they were at one point inseparable but as anyone can see, not anymore.
She loved his sister though.
"Feisty." he whispered while maintaining a stupid, proud smirk and inched closer to her face.
God how she wanted to hit him, something about him made him look so punchable.
"Careful now." she said softly, " I bite."
========================
L eyes watched the screen intently, analyzing every single detail of the deaths of those FBI agents but one stuck out.
"It is quite strange, don't you think?" the detective spoke up.
"What is it?" the man with the curly black hair enquired, his name was Aizawa, and he always seemed to wear a mean expression.
L adjusted himself on the sofa better in his usual crouching position.
"The envelope. Penber has it when he enters the train but when he leaves it is nowhere to be seen."
Matsuda looks closer to the screen and gasps, "You're right, it looks like he's holding an envelope!" the young male exclaims.
He was the youngest of them all and quite childish but serious when he needs to be. The man had black straight hair and also had easy expression
Mr. Yagami approaches from behind them to add, "There was nothing like an envelope found on his body." He flips through the pages in his hands to make sure that he wasn't feeding false information.
Mr. Yagami was the chief of the NPA and head of the Kira investigation. The somewhat old man had earned an impressive title and reputation over many years in the force.
He had a thick mustache over his mouth with grey and black hair, He was the only one besides Watari who wore glasses.
"I can't believe you noticed that Ryuzaki!" however, L payed no attention to the remark Matsuda made.
He popped a piece of candy in his mouth, thinking of that girl every time he sees candy or sweets.
He really does want to go back but what was stopping him? He didn't know.
He didn't even know if she was a regular employee or if she didn't work there and was filling in for someone.
He never thought of making friends or being close with people, but she was obviously different for the detective to be thinking about her days after meeting her.
"It looks like if he is desperately trying to look inside the train." L position his thumb on his lip, concentrating... thinking, "Could it be that Kira was on that train?"
"You really think so, Ryuzaki?" He looked at the person who asked the question which turned out to be Aizawa.
Before the detective could speak, he was called by his confidant, Watari.
Watari was the oldest, having fully white hair and white mustache.
"Ryuzaki, Mr. Ukita is on the phone."
Ukita was another member of the task force, this one had a buzz cut and a semi round face. There wasn't much about him.
Another member who wasn't present was Mogi, he had a big and strong build and possessed black hair. He had a square like structure to his face.
He stood and walked closer to Watari, hands in his pockets with his bad posture, " Please tell him the number for line five and have him call there."
Watari did what he was told, no questions asked.
"Matsuda, it is okay for you to turn on your cellphone, in fact, please do so now." L instructed.
"Huh? oh, okay." Matsuda powered on his cell only for it to ring once it was on.
L took the phone, answering the call himself. Matsuda pressed his lips in a thin line.
"Yes, this is Suzuki, head of the information processing unit for the Kira investigation." Matsuda was amazed that L had put on a different voice to answer the phone, he found the voice quite funny actually but tried his best not to laugh, "Raye Penber's fiance?"
Naomi Misora.
This got the gears turning in the greatest detective's mind.
She's missing? The day after her husband dies too.
Convenient?
That's right I worked with her L thought. She was in japan with her soon to be husband.
Any fool who didn't know Naomi would think that she would have committed suicide. She wasn't like that. She wasn't like that at all. She would be trying to find Kira. Is it possible he got to her first?
He hung up the phone and goes back to see the monitor but does not sit, " We are narrowing our investigation to only those Raye Penber was probing before December 19,"
He typed up something on his computer whilst the rest of the task force watched the genius at work.
"Raye Penber ruled these two families for no cause of suspicion but we will be placing hidden cameras and wiretaps in both households."
"Are you serious, Ryuzaki?" Matsuda says loudly in utmost shock, "That's illegal!"
Aizawa joins in too, yelling in the same manner as Matsuda "If anyone figured out, we had done that we would have a huge civil rights scandal on our hands! We'd be fired or arrested if they found out!"
Ryuzaki looked at the two with a expressionless face, not fazed by their tone of voices towards him, "You are willing to risk your lives but not your jobs?"
"Who were the two NPA personnel that Penber was probing?" Mr. Yagami asked in what seemed to be harsh manner, but he always had a harsh voice.
"Detective superintendent Yagami and his family along with General Deputy Director Kitamura and his family."
Obviously, Mr. Yagami has his fit about he was offended that his family was suspected. If Ryuzaki was honest, he wasn't listening.
"For the sake of Mr. Yagami family's privacy, who he is comfortable with looking at the live footage will do so," Mr. Yagami nodded, signaling he was okay with that, " Aizawa, you will be looking at the Kitamura's."
Aizawa also nodded in response.
Whilst both families were out, Watari went into their houses and placed all cameras and wiretaps in both households, no blind spots.
Just as L requested.
After day 1 of surveillance, L thought how clean the Yagami household was, especially his son Light. It was too convenient.
No L thought.
Too obvious.
Like he was desperately trying to paint this innocent picture. L was a lot of things but he sure as hell wasn't easily fooled.
Light had left and there was no one else home.
Ryuzaki pulled his cellphone out, again, holding the top corners with his pointer and thumb, using the pointer on the other hand to dial.
He thought he would ring Aizawa to see how the Kitamura's were. It was 5 in the evening so L thought there would be some feedback as they should be home at that somewhat late hour.
Straight to voicemail.
He must have turned his cell off to prevent interruptions.
Being a bit annoyed he had to get up, L headed to the room where Aizawa would be watching the Kitamura's.
Taking one of his hands out of his pockets to turn the door handle, he shuffled in immediately gaining Aizawa's attention. He looked more relaxed knowing it was just L and not some impostor.
"Hey Ryuzaki." the man with curly hair greeted.
"I wanted to know how the Kitamura's are coming along. Anything I should know?" he said in his usual monotone but this time it was much deeper, the detective was definitely tired.
He felt that time was precious in these cases and sleep is just wasting hours of it.
"Nope. Their daughter left in a hurry this morning and Mr and Mrs Kitamura got ready for work around 9 A.M. No one is home yet."
L glanced at the monitor behind Aizawa, exhaling slowly and deeply. He did not really care to look into the Kitamura's because of his strong suspicions of Light Yagami.
He wouldn't throw the possibility of a Kitamura being Kira however, but it's not as big as a possibility as Light.
"If there is anything you find suspicious, you know where I am."
Aizawa nodded.
As L turned around and took one step towards the door, there was a faint noise of keys jingling then a door opening to being closed shortly after.
It was the voice that made him stop in his tracks, he heard a familiar voice talking over the monitor.
L furrowed his eyebrows and immediately turn around, nearing towards the screen. He stood behind Aizawa's sitting figure.
Aizawa was confused as to why he had taken a sudden interest; after all it was L he was talking about, everything the insomniac did was questionable.
"I'm telling you." she giggled, "I swear I didn't know anything about that but it's not a bad idea."
The detective looked closer to see that smile. Same hair color and length, same voice, he remembered that laugh too.
"Where is this girl's file."
Without sparing a minute Aizawa gave him what he requested. L opened it.
NAME: Y/n Kitamura
BIRTHDAY: y/d. y/m. 1984
AGE: 19 years old
HAIR COLOUR: h/c
EYE COLOUR: e/c
HEIGHT: y/h
The picture of her that was held at the side of the page by a paper clip confirmed it.
It was her.
She looked nothing like Mr. Kitamura but there were similarities to Mrs. Kitamura.
Could he be her stepfather? he asked himself mentally.
She hung up the phone and flopped on the couch to put on the TV.
Ten minutes rolled by, and she got up to the front door and peeped.
The detective noticed that her smile dropped in doing so.
Without hesitation, Y/n went straight into her room. Not even a few seconds later, the reasons she left the room walked through the door.
Mom and 'dad'.
Aizawa was instructed, by the man himself, here on out to accompany Mr. Yagami only if he was comfortable with Aizawa's presence.
L would look into the girl he found so interesting's life via the screen.
He wanted to know what she did, what she was like, if she's a different person at home.
Y/n sat on her bed, plugged her headphones in her ears and nodded her head to the music she was listening to.
Now and again, she would sing bits of the songs and if L was lucky, she would sing the entirety of it.
He found her singing pleasing as she was good at it, really good.
She spent hours alone, neither of her parents bothered to check on her but she seemed happy though, he saw her smile despite it.
The detective let his eyes wonder around, looking at her room, it was small but comfortable. She had a bed with a couple stuffed animals on there, a desk with a computer he hadn't seen her use and a wardrobe. She had couple small shelves with books.
He thought to himself oh how she likes music and books, most of her time is occupied by it.
She was either on her laptop, doing word search or reading, all the while listening to music.
He placed his thumb on his lip as he watched her type away on her laptop. He heard the noise her keyboard made.
The man who sat in a crouch neared his head to the screen, making his back and neck stretch more, he didn't mind the pain, in fact, he hardly felt it anymore.
She didn't look like she was doing any work, so he deducted she was not attending school at the moment.
So, what was she doing with her life? L wondered Is the job at the store all she did?
He noted that she always talked to herself. Not because she was crazy but because she thought out loud
She drank from a cup and set it on her desk. She got up and was looking for something on her bed.
"Where is this stupid thing? I just had it," she sighed.
She patted her bed looking for whatever she had lost.
She smiled once it was found, a bookmark.
The h/c haired girl placed it in her book to mark where she had stopped.
Was she always this happy? he contemplated. Not that it was a bad thing nor was he complaining as he could look at her smile whole day.
As she rests her book on her bed and was about to grab that cup to put in in the kitchen when her mother came in.
She took the stapler that was on the desk, eyes averting to the cup as well.
"How long has that cup been there?" she picks up it up, looking intensely at her child.
"Not too long, I was just coming to put it ba-"
"Do you ever stop lying? We both know this was going to stay here," her mom leaves and Y/n sighed heavily.
She wasn't going to tell her mother she was wrong.
Not even seconds later she came back.
"By the way did you send me the pictures that I asked for?" She asked politer which made the detective eyebrows knit together but Y/n wasn't fazed.
It was more of like 'what's new?'
"I did not because I have to resize them so it might take a bit longer, I could have it done by the morning."
" I need it for tonight." her tone getting harsher, she just had a neutral face whilst her mom had a hissy fit, " I have so much shit to do tomorrow and now I have to worry about all this. This should have been done already! And you just don't care, right? Do you care about anything in your life? Your attitude is just disgusting."
She didn't tell Y/n about needing it for tonight, she didn't know but L could have backed Y/n up on that as he had been watching.
"Are you coming to eat or am I going to have to bring your dinner like you're a damn princess?"
"I'm coming, Ma." was all that the young girl had to say. She even bother to say much
The detective sympathized with her. It wasn't easy dealing with a mother like that. He also thought it was unfair that Y/n was treated this way.
L was surprised when she had sat down with them to eat dinner despite what happened.
Y/n mentally sighed.
The last thing she wanted to do was be there with them. Mrs. Kitamura showed her daughter a funny picture on her cell and both of them laughed like nothing had happened.
That's how it worked. Mom would argue, sometimes she would argue back if she was over doing it and then 10 minutes it's all talks and giggles.
L knew it bothered Y/n; he could tell.
Y/n was about to put the first spoonful of rice in her mouth when her mother hit the back of her head.
"Why are you taking so long to eat?"
Y/n smiled and took her dinner to her room, once in her there, the biggest frown sat on her face.
This is why she never went out of her room. It was better for everyone and if she didn't, she would have to deal with more of her mother
L listened to her parents complain how she had a very 'bad attitude' for less than a minute before giving Y/n all his attention. His eyes followed her like a lost puppy.
She looked at herself in the mirror.
Only if the detective knew what she was thinking.
His eyes looked at the plate of food she didn't dare to touch. "I wasn't all that hungry anyways." she thought out loud to herself
Y/n put in her headphones, put on her favorite song and stated singing which made her feel a bit better.
Moving out and attending university wasn't in her cards because of how financially unstable she was.
Even if she did and something were to go wrong, her parents wouldn't want her back because if she had it 'all figured out' why would she need to be at their house again?
L watched her lay there on her bed, enjoying as much of the night as she can before she has to do it all again tomorrow.
