18: Welcome Home, My Precious Child

Y/n approached the familiar door step.

Taking a deep breath, she lifted her hand to knock but stopped.

The nervous h/c haired girl looked back to the black car that she had just hopped out from.

The detective and Watari waved to her from in the car, waiting for her to enter before they drove off.

Y/n finally grabbed the courage and knocked.

Rustling was heard behind the door then footsteps approached.

She already knew whose it was by those footsteps however, y/n listen for those exact same footsteps at night or if she was in trouble.

Then the door opened.

"Y/n."

"Hi Ma."

The lady before her smiled, "Come in."

Mr. Kitamura sat on the sofa in front of the TV, ripping his attention away once Y/n had entered. The first thing she noticed was the box on the coffee table in front of him.

It was labelled 'Y/n's things'

"Hi Y/n." He greeted, not moving an inch.

She waved in response and had a seat on a separate sofa.

"Glad to see you're okay." Her mother smiled, it made her uneasy when she did that.

"Thanks." She plastered a fake smile, "So you've been calling, is there a particular reason why?"

Her mother inhaled and got right down to business, "If you apologize for your behavior the last time you were here, you can move back in."

Y/n eyes widened "Pardon?"

"I know how emotional you get on the topic of your father so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt."

"Um hunny, this is the opposite of what we discussed." Kitamura interjected. The lady just gave the man a death glare, making him shift and uneasy.

Y/n cleared her throat and moved herself to the edge of the sofa, "So you saw nothing wrong in what you did?"

Mrs. Kiamura tilted her head, "Of course not, I am your mother and I know what is best for you."

"Please enlighten me on what you think is best for me." Y/n felt her breathing getting heavier and more aggravated every second she looked at her.

"You'll suffer out there on your own."

The way she was so serious and oblivious irked Y/n.

"I am a detective working alongside the man widely known as L all the while living in a building with my own floor." Y/n paused, narrowing her eyes a bit, "What part of that is suffering?"

Kitamura eyes widen a bit, "You're working with L?" He looked impressed almost, "My My, how did that happen?"

Y/n's mother scoffed, "She's obviously sleeping with him."

The young girl shook her head gently, "You're unbelievable. Can you be proud for once?"

She shrugged, "I just find it hard to believe."

"Why is that?"

"Because it's...you."

"The reason I became a detective was because of no thanks to you. If you think your words hurt me, you're wrong."

"My words are the truth that you don't want to hear."

Y/n scoffed, "Everything that comes out of your mouth is complete garbage."

Mrs. Kitamura stood to her feet and watched her daughter in her eyes, "I should have known you would've acted this way! I have no idea what I was thinking letting you in, Get out of my house!"

Y/n took the box of the table, "Gladly."

She headed to her door and whilst outside she held the box to her side with one hand, with the other she stopped the door from being slammed by her mother.

"Before I go, you may not like me but for some reason, I will always worry about you."

Her mother scowled at her only child, "Fuck you."

The door slammed.

What Y/n said before was true, her words didn't hurt.

But those did.

Y/n sat on the sidewalk and opened the box. It was a punch of photos she kept, headphones, a small *walkman and some of her jewelry.

She took the headphones and the walkman out and listened to the music that was on it. Y/n began walking the music filling the frightening silence.

The early night wind blew freezing cold, sending shivers up and down her body.

At least she got closure.

Her mother just had this discrete burning hatred for her child and refused to acknowledge it.

Y/n didn't know where she was walking to but she went as far as her legs could take her.

Going into the city, she admired the buildings, city lights and the people.

Families, friends and couples hand in hand, shopping or just strolling about.

She sat at a wooden bench in front of this water fountain, the water splashing lightly on her now and again.

She adored the simplicity of the rather small fountain, a lovely angel stood at the center holding the water that fell.

The box sat on her lap, she made the bold decision to go through the photos that were in it.

They were in a scattered manner in the box as if her mother threw it in.

She organized it herself, lining each sides with the ones behind it.

Y/n smiled at the first picture, her father and herself at a very young age sleeping soundly in the same position.

They did do that a lot, there were a lot of pictures sleeping next to each other in the same manner. It went to show how similar the two were.

Y/n felt the earbuds of her headphones pulled from her ears, she instantly looked up to meet the familiar pair of dark eyes.

"How did you find me?"

L shoved his hands in his pockets, looking down at her, "I'm a detective."

She tilted her head, "You bugged the place, didn't you?"

"Maybe."

Y/n playfully rolled her eyes hiding a smile, "Did you think I would let you go in there if I didn't know if you were okay?"

"Just sit you idiot." she laughed softly.

"Yes ma'am."

This caused her smile to grow wider.

He glance to the photo she held in her hand.

"Is that you?" he somewhat awed, taking it from her, looking closely at it.

"Yup, me and my father."

"I wish I could've met him."

Y/n smiled weakly, "He would've loved you."

Silence stirred as he stared at the photo.

"You were a cute one, weren't you?" L mumbled while he brought up it up closer, looking at the two of them, "Certainly gotten cuter."

Y/n laughed, "I'm dating you already, you don't have to lie."

L tilted his head at the girl beside him, "Have I ever lied to you before?"

He made a point.

She looked down at the rest, the detective watching as well. There was one with her in a pool, one with her in a bucket filled with water then a sink filled with water.

"You were like a guppy." L commented, "Always in water." he mumbled.

Y/n laughed, the detective feeling warm when she did. Grateful and honored he was the one to put that smile on her face.

"You're right." Y/n giggled.

The next few pictures were standard and normal when L eyes caught a particular one.

Y/n was about 4, she smiled at the camera widely with chocolate smeared on her mouth and a cookie in her hand.

It reminded him of himself, when he was bit older than that L stole cookies from the pantry at night.

"Do you mind if I kept this one?" He held the picture for her to see.

"Sure, I have no use for it anyway."

With a tiny smile, L clinged onto it.

Watari approached the two with a bag, "Here you are Ryuzaki."

"Hi Watari, didn't know you were here." Y/n smiled warmly.

The man chuckled slightly, "Why wouldn't I?"

L opened the bag and pulled out two lollipops, unwrapping both of them, placing one in her mouth and one in his.

Watari eyes met the photo in L's hand.

"Is that you Ms. Y/n?"

She took the lollipop out of her mouth, "The one and only."

Her tongue got a dark shade of blue instantly.

Watari laughed, "That reminds me."

Seeing where he was going with his L shook his head, "Watari, no. Please."

"Watari, yes. Please." Y/n prompted in seeing L's reaction.

"When Ryuzaki was a little boy at the orphanage, he used to sneak into the kitchen late at night and steal cookies. When I would catch him he pretended like he wasn't doing anything when his mouth and hands was covered in chocolate."

The girl with the blue tongue laughed, "No way! That's adorable." She looked over to him, was was red and ready to die of embarrassment.

"Thank you for sharing Watari." L sighed.

Y/n nodded vigorously, "Yes, thank you."

"I'll be in the car." Watari walked away, leaving the two.

Y/n brushed his hair back but it still dropped back in front of his face, "Cookie thief huh?"

"Sweet things draw me in okay?" he paused, "It'll explain why I'm attracted to you."

Y/n giggled, "Very Smooth."

L held the side of her face, gazing into her eyes and admiring everything about her face. His eyes looked down at her lips that were now blue.

He pulled the lollipop out of mouth and kissed her softly, her breath hitched in a good way, then placed a hand on his.

The kiss lasted a couple more seconds till he pulled away.

Ryuzaki tried breathe steadily but he found it a bit difficult as the girl before him took his breath away.

Y/n felt as if she was in a movie as he held her hand and kissed the back of it. L broke the silence, "Let's go sweetheart."

========================

Y/n was happy L was finally feeling comfortable with the relationship and physical affection.

It showed he had grown emotionally and he came far.

Only one thing though, he grew even more overprotective. Y/n didn't even know that was possible.

The two sat side by side, pushing a late night. Watching cameras, going through files and doing paper work.

It was certainly boring but it was less boring since they were doing it together.

"I'm telling you." Y/n neatly placed the papers in a manilla folder, " I can get Higuchi to admit he's Kira."

"How will you do that?"

"Well for starters he's in love with me." She looked to her right to face L but something stood behind him.

It was the bony looking shinigami that was supposed to be following Higuichi.

Her breath hitched whilst eyes on the unexpected visitor.

"Are you okay?"

She cleared her throat "You should look behind you."

That sentence alone was enough to freak the detective out. He turned immediately, eyes meeting the shinigami.

"Y/n L/n." it called.

Her heart dropped to her feet.

"Yes?"

"You are the one who contacted Ryuk to see me, is that right?"

"That's right."

"My name is Rem. I need you to catch Higuchi and retrieve the book. I know you know he has Misa's book. Take it away. Now she has no memory of her doings, I can't have Misa in trouble. I care for her safety. Promise me you will save Misa from Light, he will only ruin her."

Y/n processed her words, she really thought Rem came to kill her.

"I promise but I'll need your help."

"Y/n," L called a bit sternly, "Are you sure about this? Have you thought this through?"

"It'll be good for us if we had supernatural help my love. It'll all be okay," Y/n squeezed his hand in reassurance.

"I will help in any way you need but heed my warning Y/n L/n, if you don't carry out your part of this deal" Rem trailed off and pointed at her, "I will kill you. "

Y/n eyebrows shot up as she gulped harshly, "You have my word."

"Good." Rem said.

"Could you get me some coffee please?" L whispered to the girl beside him.

She nodded. Happy he didn't oppose to the deal because it would just make things much harder.

She got up and headed to the kitchen.

"Rem." L called, standing and shoving his hands in his pockets, "Take my life instead."

"What are you saying? " Rem questioned. She only more or less stood in one place like a statue.

"If we don't hold up our end of the deal, take my life instead. Spare Y/n." he paused, "Please."

Shinigami Rem looked into the human's eyes, he was genuine and very much serious.

"Okay. I only agree because I understand. "

L tilted his head, at the creature. Rem was becoming less scary for the detective.

The shinigami continued, "I too would like to protect a human."

Without sparing a second, she walked through the walls, going only God knows where.

Not too long Y/n came back with two mugs.

One of them being the mug she bought for L on his birthday. He refused to drink his beverages out of anything else.

She sat his hot mug in front of him, noticing Rem was gone.

"Thank you meine geliebte."

Y/n sat next to her one and only, furrowing her eyebrows, "Meine Geliebte? That's new. What language is that?"

"I'm not telling." he raised he the mug to his lips

Y/n laughed at his stubborness, "You could be insulting me and I would never know."

"I would never." he paused, "Meine Geliebte." he teased.

"I hate you." she groaned, rolling her head back.

"I'll tell you when I'm on my death bed."

"You're kidding."

He smiled at her slightly, "Not at all, makes it fun for me."
