Chapter 5: I Miss Him
"Good morning, Babe," Josh smiled.
"Good morning," Mari grinned.
Josh kissed her forehead. "What was it that you were going to tell me last night?"
"Oh," Mari mumbled, blushing red, "it's nothing really important. It's stupid."
"No, tell me," Josh said softly, grasping her hand.
"It's horrible. You're going to think I'm horrible," Mari laughed, resting her head on his shoulder.
"I could never," Josh chuckled, kissing the top of her head. "Tell me, Darling."
Mari sighed. "Kids freak the life out of me. I genuinely am terrified of them."
"Yeah," Josh nodded. "I still don't understand why Catherine wanted kids."
"Really?" Mari sighed in relief. "I mean, it's like some parasite from Star Trek feeding off your blood and energy. It's freaky as heck."
Josh shrugged. "I wouldn't call it a parasite, but the process is definitely interesting."
Mari shuddered. "Interesting for you. You're a guy."
"I mean interesting like interesting. As in, scary."
"Ah, like how in Turkey, sheep's brain is a delicacy 'interesting'," Mari laughed.
"Exactly," Josh chuckled.
Mari sighed and hugged him tightly. "We're pretty good together, aren't we?"
"Yeah," Josh smiled, "we are."
—————
Catherine yawned as she made breakfast, feeling sick of being fatigued all the time.
"You were right," Mari texted.
"About what?" Catherine texted back. "You have to be more specific. I'm right a lot."
"About everything. Ever. I would have regretted it for the rest of my life."
"Yep," Catherine typed with a grin. "Have fun."
"Tell Matt I said hi. If I'm off today, don't freak out. We were up all night talking and packing."
"Haha. Will do. Miss you already. See you in a few months!"
"I'll text you when we land!"
"Alright." Catherine went back to cooking and moaned. "Why does my body hate me?"
"You're supposed to be asleep!" Matt squeaked.
"My appointment is in two hours," Catherine sighed. "If I sleep any longer, I'll miss it."
"Alright," Matt mumbled.
"My back hurts," Catherine moaned. "How is that possible? I'm not even big yet."
"Well, you do have two things sucking the life out of you."
"Yeah, those things are your children."
"I know," Matt moaned. "Two."
"Yeah, Babe. We've been through this. Twins. Two. One and then another one," Catherine chuckled. "I'm actually pretty happy about it."
"Right," Matt said slowly. "Twice the happy. Happy, happy, happy."
Catherine recoiled as she burnt herself on the stove. "Holy crap, that thing's hot."
"Go!" Matt frowned, pushing her away.
"Go where?" Catherine laughed.
"Away!"
Catherine sighed. "Alright."
"Run it under cold water," Matt sighed. "Really, Cath, you have to be more careful."
"On the bright side, I can commit a crime without leaving fingerprints," Catherine grinned.
"Not funny."
"It's a little funny." Catherine went and quickly ran her fingers under cold water and then changed for her appointment. "Ready, Babe?"
"Ready as I'll ever be," Matt sighed.
The couple got in the car, which had been fixed about a week prior, and Catherine brought up the subject of names. "We should each make lists of the names we like."
"Names?" Matt said with a frown. "We have to name them?"
"Not right away," Catherine chuckled, "but we will."
"I suppose so," Matt mumbled. "That's a big decision."
"Yes, it is," Catherine sighed. "I've already got a few ideas though. What do you think of the name Halston for a girl?"
"Hailstorm."
"What?" Catherine laughed.
"Halston sounds like hailstorm," Matt said pointedly. "They'll tease her. We need a tease-free name."
"As if there is one," Catherine scoffed. "I have other options. Like maybe Charlotte for a girl, after my sister."
Matt smiled softly. "A girl would be nice."
"Yeah," Cath nodded. "I think one of each would be good. Honestly though, I'm fine with whatever we have."
"Right," Matt sighed. "Both have horrors and good things, I suppose."
Catherine nodded.
Soon, they arrived at the hospital. After an examination and a blood test, a technician took the couple into a room for the ultrasound.
Tears welled in Cath's eyes as the two babies appeared on the screen. "Wow," she sighed. "Those are our kids."
"That's crazy," Matt laughed, fighting back tears.
Catherine grasped his hand. "I love you, Baby...I can't believe we're going to be parents."
Matt tried to hold back tears, failing terribly. "I never thought I could dream to again, but- but here we are."
Catherine reached over and wiped a tear from his cheek. "Matt, are you happy?"
"Indescribably happy," he laughed, kissing her hand.
"Alright, everything's fine," the technician smiled. "I'm assuming you'll want a copy of this?"
Catherine nodded and sat up, hugging her husband tightly. "We did it, Babe," she said softly. "Thanks for coming with me."
"L names," Matt said abruptly. "L names for sure."
"I think we can work that out," Catherine smiled.
—————
On the car ride home, Cath said, "You know, Carlos's middle name is Logan. If we have a boy, that's what we could name him."
Matt paused for a moment and closed his eyes for a brief second before remembering that he was driving. "Yes. They would like that."
"They?"
"Yep," Matt nodded, his eyes fixed on the road.
"'They' who?" Catherine laughed.
"The children," Matt said as if it were blatantly obvious.
"Oh, right," Catherine said slowly. "Can we stop and get something to eat? I'm starving."
"Where you wanna go?" Matt asked, his mind on Josh.
"I want something spicy. Maybe that Mexican place nearby that we can never remember the name of," Catherine chuckled.
"You might regret it later," Matt laughed.
Cath shrugged. "I'm pregnant, so I'll end up getting sick either way. I just want a taco."
"Living on the wild side, are we?"
"Shut up," Catherine laughed.
"I won't," Matt grinned. "I promise to never shut up again until they're eighteen and out of the house."
"Great," Catherine chuckled.
—————
Mari curled up at the end of the bed, burying her face in her knees as she cried softly.
Josh came and sat down beside her. Gently wrapping an arm around her, he asked softly, "What's wrong, Sweetheart?"
"He- he never got to know," Mari laughed, wiping her nose hurriedly. "I-I don't want you to see my crying."
"Well, like it or not, we're married. For better or for worse. There are going to be tears," Josh said softly, kissing the top of her head. "What's wrong?"
"Isaac, he never knew...he'll never know that we're happy and safe and together."
"I think, in his own way, he knew we'd end up together."
"How so?" Mari sniffled.
"Well, the fact that our bank account has quadrupled might have something to tell us."
"Yeah," Mari laughed sadly.
"Something else is bugging you, though," Josh said knowingly.
"It's nothing. It's stupid, Babe."
Josh flashed a toothy grin. "You called me, Babe."
"Maybe," Mariah blushed.
"Now, what is it that's bothering you?"
"How well do you know me, Isaac? Really?"
"Better than you think," Josh smirked.
"Josh, you don't even know my middle name," Mariah whimpered.
"It's Jane," Josh grinned.
Mari shot him a look of surprise. "You don't know where I grew up."
"You grew up in Chicago," Josh nodded. "You told me the night Jeremy broke up with you."
"I did?" Mari stammered. "And you remembered?"
"Of course I remembered," Josh smiled. "I love you."
Mari burst into tears and clung to his shirt. "Why?!"
"Because you're you," Josh said softly, holding her close.
"I'm gonna wake up any minute now," Mari laughed, holding him tighter as if he could disappear at any second.
"I love you, Mari."
"Say it again?"
"I love you. More than you could ever know."
—————
"Matt, you are the best husband a girl could ask for," Catherine smiled.
"Really?" Matt chuckled. "I mean, Josh might have me beat."
Catherine scoffed. "Not by a mile."
"Good. Hope he isn't scaring Mariah too much."
"Me too," Catherine chuckled. "Do we want to do something together? I mean, we have nothing else planned for the rest of the day."
Matt's eyes dimmed with sadness. "Your voice will suffer for this, won't it?"
"Nothing I can't recover from," Catherine shrugged.
"You don't know that," Matt nearly whispered. "We should sing now...while we have the chance."
"Alright," Catherine smiled.
"I have those new tracks I've been working on, if you wanna see them," Matt beamed.
"Of course I want to see them," Catherine nodded.
"Wanna do some recording? I can't do as well as Josh, but-"
"I'm not too bad," Catherine shrugged. "I used to cover songs with my sister when we were younger. I would play piano and we'd both sing. Anyway, I learned from a young age how to do it."
"Yeah, but the CD stuff," Matt smirked, "the editing, that's all Josh."
"You'd be surprised how easy it is," Catherine chuckled. "I never did much of it, but I know how. My sister and I always liked the raw recordings."
"I miss him," Matt pouted.
Catherine wrapped her arms around his waist. "I know, Baby. I know."
