13 : The Mime
"What did you say the name of the play is, Mr. Haprèle?"
"It's called The Mime's Extraordinary Adventures, starring the most talented, amazingly awesome actor and mime, my father! Give it up for Fred Haprèle!"
As it happens, Mylène happens to push open the trapdoor at that exact moment, and so Marinette bursts into wild applause. Fred, following Mylène and Sabine Dupain-Cheng into Marinette's room, goes red.
"Well, congratulations," Sabine says, "you clearly make your daughter very proud!"
"Now all I need is my hat to complete my costume," Fred says, and Marinette grabs it from her desk.
"Here it is!"
"Thank you, Marinette!" Fred beams. He mimes and box and takes the hat out of it, leaving Marinette holding the imaginary box. It's quite disconcerting.
"Ha!" Sabine laughs. "I don't think Mylène was exaggerating at all!"
"I fixed the tear in it," Marinette says. "I also sewed the pocket on the inside, just like you asked."
"You've done a perfect job," Fred says, inspecting the hat. "Thanks to you, I'll have my good luck charm right here next to me at all times. A photo of my beloved daughter!"
Marinette and Sabine can't stop themselves awwing as Mylène hugs her dad.
Doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo doo doo.
Fred jumps slightly, and pulls his phone out of his pocket.
"Hey, Sarah?"
"No, this is Chris," comes the voice from the phone. "The pickup location has been changed to the Louvre Pyramid."
"Really?" Fred asks, surprised. "That's on the other side of town."
"It's closer to the Eiffel Tower," Chris says. Fred checks his watch.
"I should still be able to make it. Thanks for letting me know."
"No problem," Chris says. "That's what friends are for. See you there!"
The phone call ends, and Mylène rolls her eyes.
"Dad, don't trust Chris. You know full well he's only trying to take your place in the show."
"I'll go where Sarah said the other day," Fred says, "and call her to check. She knows what Chris is like."
"Why are you meeting so early?" asks Marinette. "It's only just lunchtime, and the show's this evening."
"Sarah wants a full check," Fred sighs, "and a complete rehearsal. I'd better get going. Thanks again, Marinette!"
"You're most welcome," Marinette says, as Sabine shows the Haprèles out. The moment the trapdoor closes, Marinette does a 180 turn and presses the ON button on her laptop. It takes a moment to boot up, and she sits down in her chair and pulls her drawing tablet over. She logs onto Miraculous, and types a message to ChatNoir.
LadyBug: hey chat, u up for making another episode?
She opens "Create New Episode" anyway, and begins. She's basing this akuma on Fred Haprèle, if he had believed Chris and gone to the Louvre. Having no idea where he was actually supposed to meet, she just draws the bus on a random street.
ChatNoir: of course, but i see uve started without me. antisocial, mlady
LadyBug: sorry, chat, i just want it uploaded for tonight. uve heard about the mime tonight at the eiffel tower right
ChatNoir: impossible for me not to, bugaboo, the posters are everywhere. so this episode is based on the mime?
LadyBug: hence the name. in case u didnt know, the understudy for the show is constantly trying to make sure the lead mime isnt there. in this episode, he manages to trick him, so the lead mime gets upset. voila le akuma
ChatNoir doesn't bother with a reply, but starts to help Marinette draw. With both of them working quickly to finish before tonight, they manage to finish just as Sabine yells upstairs.
"Marinette, are you ready? We're going to be leaving soon!"
LadyBug: can u upload? i gtg
ChatNoir: no problem, mlady. r u going to the mime tonight?
Marinette turns her laptop off and opens Miraculous on her phone. She replies as she's running down the stairs.
LadyBug: wouldnt miss it, kitty. u?
The reply is quick, and she reads it before she turns her phone off and shoves it into her purse.
ChatNoir: of course. maybe ill see u there
LadyBug: maybe u will
"Ready to go, Marinette?" asks her dad, and Marinette nods. The family of three begin to walk, as it isn't too far away, and they meet Alya and her parents in the line. Marinette already knew they had ajorning seats, but Alya presents her with some news she didn't know.
"Marinette, our seats are beside Adrien!"
Marinette's mouth drops open. She should have predicted it, considering Fred had got her and Alya front row seats and Adrien never sat anywhere but. Still, it comes as a very pleasant surprise.
"Adrien!" Alya yells, as they move in. Marinette's parents laugh, and go to sit with Alya's parents. This leaves Alya and Marinette with the two seats on the left of Adrien. Alya sits beside her mum, leaving Marinette to sit between her and the love of her life.
"Hey, Alya, Marinette," Adrien says.
"Um, hi, you're nice, I mean seeing you is nice, because you're nice, and-"
Beside Marinette, Alya starts laughing, and Marinette wants to cover her face in shame. Fortunately for her, Adrien is distracted. He checks his phone, and Marinette doesn't know he's looking at the message LadyBug sent to tell him that she might see him at the mime.
"Hey, Adrien, did you know LadyBug and ChatNoir have posted a new episode of The Adventures of Tikki and Plagg about the mime?" Alya asks. "I reckon the akuma is based on Fred Haprèle!"
"Yeah, I heard the understudy is constantly trying to make sure Fred can't make it," Adrien says, but it's obvious that his attention isn't on the conversation. His head is turned, and rather than looking at his classmates, he's watching all the faces in the seats behind him as they sit down. Marinette wonders what, or who, he's trying to find.
"Yeah," Adrien says. "It was a great episode. LadyBug is really talented."
Marinette looks away from him, her face going pink at the praise. She'd never imagined that she'd hear Adrien compliment her. To her relief, the lights begin to dim, and neither Alya nor Adrien spot the colour on her cheeks.
It's only when the introduction music starts to play that Adrien turns back to face the stage, but he isn't paying much attention to the mime. He just thinks that LadyBug is here, and he imagines that she's sitting beside him, that they're watching the mime together.
[A/N: DAM Adrien infuriates me. Please vote/comment, because my real-life friends haven't noticed that I've finished Season 2 EVEN THOUGH I TOLD THEM and I need attention]
