INT. KITCHEN - DAY

MIKA flies onto the kitchen table where a box of lemons is.

PEAR

So you might be wondering why I brought you here.

MIKA

Yes, yes, yes! Of course! I have the suspense!

PEAR

Okay, okay, chill. I thought you were the patient one?

MIKA

Just because I'm patient, doesn't mean I don't get excited about big news!

MIKA pecks a lemon.

MIKA

Speaking of which, tell me the news! Please...pretty please?

PEAR

Okay, fine. But it's actually quite sad.

MIKA puts on a sad face.

PEAR

You're quite cute when you put on a sad face...Anyway. So, I actually had a brother named Lemon.

MIKA

Oh my millets, did he look like you?!

PEAR

Eh, no. Because he was sick. Elizabeth and her mom wanted a cockatiel friend for Bluey since they thought he was getting lonely when Elizabeth was at school and her mom was busy.

MIKA

Uh-huh.

PEAR

They went to someone who had our mom and her four babies, my brother and I included. That someone said I was already four months old, so I would be very isolated from humans. That was so not true, okay? I just needed a bit of patience and time to adjust.

MIKA

Yeah, of course! I can't believe that someone would say that about you!

PEAR

Yeah, something 'bout how I especially love playing at 11 pm and how Elizabeth would be asleep by then. Like I don't care, okay? Look at me now! I adjust my sleep schedule all the time! So moving on, obviously my previous owner — that someone — deterred Elizabeth and her mom from adopting me.

PEAR takes a slow, deep breath.

PEAR

They got my brother instead.

MIKA

Why him over you? Is there something special about him?

PEAR

I guess you could say that. My previous owner said my brother is super clingy and nice to people. Guess that lured Elizabeth and her mom in, huh?

MIKA

Yeahhh, I mean, people normally like birds who are tame and chill.

PEAR

But not when he was actually sick to begin with.

MIKA

Oh, what the heck?

PEAR

Yeah, so uh, apparently my previous owner thought it would be a good idea to get rid of him by giving him to Elizabeth and her mom.

MIKA

Gosh, that's so messed up! I know birds also act clingy when they're sick, right?

PEAR

Yep. But he was still flying and stuff, so no one suspected a thing.

MIKA

Did Elizabeth and her mom cut contact with your previous owner?

PEAR

Yes, and I would rather not associate myself with my previous owner. She's just a stranger to me now.

MIKA

For sure, I mean cut off contact with anyone with evil intentions.

A moment of silence passes.

MIKA

Wait, so how did you end up here?

PEAR

Oh, when Lemon passed away, my previous owner "felt bad" and gave me away. But yeah, just felt like I trust you and want you to know...the dark side of my past.

MIKA

Yeah, thanks for trusting me with this. I'm sure it's a pretty sensitive topic.

PEAR

Mhm, Bluey and I don't even talk about it. He witnessed Lemon's death. Gosh, losing a best friend...I can't even imagine the pain.

BANG

BLUEY and ANGIE are fighting over the food bowl.

MIKA

(to PEAR)

Eh, he seems to be too distracted to mourn right now.
