NMT: Power Rangers

Trust me, I didn't imagine myself doing this on Power Rangers, but I am now actually honored to do so.

Hello everyone, welcome back. This review, will come as a shocker to you, and believe me, when I saw this movie, I was shocked as well.

Ladies and gentlemen, this movie is a 5/5 - and it is my new favorite movie, beating Captain America: Civil War.

That's not to say "Civil War" wasn't any good, no that movie was an epic! The reason I liked Power Rangers just a tad bit more, was because of how well they actually pulled it off.

For years, Power Rangers has been known to try and make their shows appealing with the flashy explosions, acrobatics, flamboyant costumes/make-up, and rather colorful dialogue.

What I imagine, is that what put them on the spotlight was their very first series that came out way back in 1993.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers

Back then, this was cool! I wasn't alive of course, but this is what people of the times grew up with and thought of this as amazing stuff. Problem was, they continued with the same concept, even as times have passed since the 90's.

They didn't want to upgrade the visual quality even when other shows were doing so- successfully. While the franchise, was slowly declining, even as they kept remaking different series with different styles to keep them afloat. With this, the franchise inherited a bad reputation for rehashing the same stuff with a different set of Rangers with different abilities. One was police-themed, one was jungle-themed (I think), etc.

Then they took a dive and gladly disappeared for a while...

Later, they came back in 2011 with the Nickelodeon TV show, Power Rangers: Samurai:

Now, when this one first came out, I wanted to cry. However, my little brother took a liking to the commercials hyping up for the series premiere, and so, I had no choice but to watch it with him.

Right from the start, those cheesy and obviously fake costumes were one of the first things I saw. I already started cringing. However, what I did like was that in this episode, the narrator introducing this set of "Samurai Rangers" acknowledged the fact that they were "another kind of Rangers." From what I remember, no other show has referenced the others, as they have all been reboots. This one gave its respects to its predecessors, so I gave it more credit for that.

After watching more episodes with my brother for some time, my distaste for this show mitigated slightly. This wasn't a show I'd watch on my own terms, but if I had to watch it with my brother, I actually wouldn't have minded. Any other series, I would've been falling asleep!

But I didn't. This series was actually OK. There was more plot development within the episodes and the episodes overlapped nicely like the generations of Rangers I watched and enjoyed as a child:

Power Rangers: Dino Thunder

I think there was another series but can't remember what it was called...

But anyway, "Samurai" wasn't a sloppy show. In fact, I found out the actors for this series actually trained to perform their own stunts- and it wasn't that bad of stunts either, t looked like real fighting!

So, I gave my respects to the show's efforts. However, it was still visually awkward, even if it is for children. Heck, at that age, it bothered me that they looked like costumes and toys!

The series ended in 2012, spinned off into "Super Samurai" for a bit, didn't last that long, then permanently ended.

Well, that was fun while it lasted.

Two years later, Power Rangers: Megaforce rolled in! Still looking horrible, but this show actually made me do a double-take!

I didn't get to watch this show too much, as my brother started falling out of the fandom mid-season, but from what I last saw was something  really commendable.

For starters, they had some snazzy looking jackets. That was probably the only visually appealing thing about the show.

But the big hitter was the theme of this show. Right in that picture, they look like pirates, but I have no clue what they are initially- but notice my "initially."

The thing that made these Rangers special, was the fact that they could turn themselves into Rangers of the past (as in, previous series) and use their abilities!

Now THAT, I found to be a HUGE homage to the franchise. That was pretty cool! Still didn't buy me in, but it was definitely cool and unique.

When that series ended soon (2015-ish), they started building up to their shorter spin-off, Power Rangers: Super Megaforce, and that lead to a bigger televised movie.

From what I heard, this was the biggest shoutout to the entire franchise. Somehow, this new set of Rangers called on all of the other past ones to help them.

So first they became them, and now they were with them.

STILL DIDN'T BUY ME, BUT it was still cool for the children! This right here, is what I call original:

And I saw clips of the finale, and it was pretty nice to see my childhood going at it again in a new light.

Then they followed with another series, Power Rangers: Dino Charge. That lasted one season, I'm not gonna post that one below for that, because I didn't even know it existed until I did my research to write this!

Speaking of which, I didn't digress, I provided enough information to get back to the point. When "Megaforce" came out, they soon after announced the movie. No cast, but some crew. People who worked on X-Men: First Class.

When I heard this, I laughed first, then thought about it. If people who worked on an "X-Men" origins story were going to do this, this most likely meant they weren't gonna play around with Power Rangers! So instead of creating a biased opinion based on their previous failures, I decided to wait it out.

Years later, they drop the trailer for it (below if you haven't seen it):

There's more trailers you can find, but this was the one that got all the previous fans and current fans hyped up!

Heck, non-fans dished in too (*cough, cough* My Mom)!

Here's where my little history lesson above, comes into play. I have later come to learn that this movie is a reboot of the very first series, but made into a movie. I have feeling, that since "Samurai," they knew they wanted a movie, and wanted to start making the acknowledgement of the previous shows become prominent. So they used that show to hint at them. The for "Megaforce," they did the big hoo-rah!

And now that I think of it, the last one, "Dino Charge," was probably made just to bring relevance back to the original prehistoric theme they originally had, to prepare us for this reboot....

See? It all came together.

Now, back to the present- the movie!

What I really liked, was the character development done with these new Rangers. Rather than just being "a bunch of kids," they all have deeper stories that later merge into one another. They go so deep, that unlike the shows, the characters are actually relatable! Yes, you read that right! Speaking of deep, they really hit you hard on how..."different" each character is. So different, I'll just tell you now, one of them is actually autistic in this movie! Curveball from the original, and there is another secret in the movie, but that is too big of a spoiler, you'll have to see yourself!

Next, the combat. Perfect. Not too crazy, not to kiddie, it felt like watching any other superhero movie!

Visual effects. They were beautiful. NO CHEESY ENEMIES IN COSTUMES IN HERE! OMG THEY UPGRADED! AFTER TWENTY-FOUR YEARS, THEY FINALLY DID IT! AND THE WEAPONS DON'T LOOK LIKE TOYS! NO TOYS!!!

Dialogue. Proper. Lighthearted like it should be with some good comic reliefs, but the movie can also get really dark and touchy sometimes, which might be why some critics didn't like it. I did, because it added to character development. Depends on your tastes.

Soundtrack. I normally don't rate soundtrack, but this movie had a pretty nice one! They included a bunch of modern songs, mid-2000 songs, and even a cameo of the original Power Rangers theme! It was sorta funny and a bit corny, but was timed correctly for that comedic approach. In fact, a small number of parts get that cheesy feel, but they were timed well to not distract you too much from what's going on!

Finally, the acting. Great cast, they all played the roles of different teenagers of different backgrounds, quite well! And Elizabeth Banks as the antagonist? Oh my Sweet Christmas. Even for a Power Rangers movie, she was a fantastic villain. I feel like she's done more acting here, than she has in any other movie- including ones where she's a good person. Yep, even better than that Hunger Games role she had as Effie Trinket:

Believe me, that was nothing, compared to-:

Any Marvel fans reading this? Let's just say she was the Loki of this movie (not only 'cause of that scepter)!

I like this movie a bit better than "Civil War," not because the action or acting was better, but because of the long overdue treatment it had, that was ever so deserved, and delivered correctly. This movie easily ranks as a superhero movie and has rebuilt its reputation in a truly revitalizing way.

I recommend this to anyone, of any age.

SPEAKING OF SUPERHERO MOVIES, STAY UNTIL AFTER THE CREDITS! I REPEAT, STAY 'TIL AFTER! When my brother and I saw it, for some reason, we stood. We don't know why, but we did. The whole theater got up and left, except for us and some family of three. It was only us lucky groups that saw the ending.

I'd go more in detail about the plot and what it's about, but it'd be hard to do so without spoiling and/or making it sound boring. Just go see it yourself!

*Thanks everyone! Until next time!
