chapter thirty eight.

Motive — Ariana Grande

With as many people that had been coming to her house lately, Gianina hadn't even bothered to groan upon hearing a knocking at her door. She pushed herself out of bed, jumping as she put one sock on her foot, the girl leaping towards the door. She was able to walk normally once she got both socks on, the girl pouting her lips once she tugged on the door handle.

"Who is i—" as she opened it, nobody was there. The girl looked around the hallway, briefly looking down to see a small envelope with her name written at the top in cursive letters.

Gianina Salvatore

"What the hell." The woman mumbled, picking the envelope up before she shut the door closed and tore it open, letting her eyes scan the letters written on the card. "Please join the Mikaelson family this evening at seven o'clock for dancing, cocktails, and celebration."

Yet again, there was another knock at the door and Gia was quick to open it, already standing by the door.

"You get the letter too?" Damon questioned, not bothering to greet her at all.

"Nice to see you too, brother." Gianina smiled lightly, the older vampire simply rolling his eyes at the gesture. "Someone is in a mood."

"Because I have to ask you to help me and Stefan keep Elena safe at that part—"

Gia slammed the door shut, she wasn't going to bother getting caught up in their mess yet again.

Gianina inhaled heavily as she approached the Mikaelson home on her own. She ran a hand over her dress, making sure she looked presentable enough, this whole thing reminding her of back when she was a real teenager again. Dressing up, feeling nervous for how many eyes would be on her, coming into a party alone was much different than dancing up on a stage in her mind.

"Here goes nothing." The girl mumbled underneath her breath, pushing through the giant double doors.

As she entered, various people she had never seen before, along with some she knew were all talking amongst themselves as the band played music that filled the whole area. She took in a deep breath and the scent of flowers entered her nostrils, making the woman smile. She glanced up toward the stairway, where Elijah and Klaus stood, both of them greeting her with a smile.

"Mayor Lockwood." The girl spoke up as she walked further into the room, her immediate reaction to find a friendly face. "You look amazing."

"Gia! I didn't think i'd see you here after the fundraiser you seemed a bit over the whole... supernatural business." The woman commented, taking in the younger yet older girls appearance. "You look amazing too, by the way."

"Thank you, this dress is older than you." Gianina flattened the sides of her gown yet again, taking in her surroundings. "I am pretty over all of it but, I had a feeling if I didn't come the Mikaelsons or my brothers would have shown up to my apartment and drag me here by my feet."

"You're right about that." Damon spoke up, walking up to the two women. "Carol, Gia, I see you came to hang out with your new best friends. Sister, can I have a minute with the mayor."

The Salvatore looked at the other woman who begrudgingly nodded her head, allowing the girl to walk away from them.

"Good luck." She whispered, knowing her brother would hear before she lifted up her dress slightly, allowing her to walk better.

As the girl walked, she ran into someone's chest, swearing that whoever had done it bumped into her on purpose.

"Oh, i'm just so clumsy. My apologies, I don't think we've met before." The man spoke, watching as Gia looked upwards. "I'm Kol."

"Gia." The Salvatore responded dryly, her eyes dead on his own. "I'm assuming you have good eye sight being one of the oldest vampires in the world, why don't you use them?"

"Ah, you're the fiery ones i've heard my brothers talking about, I like it." The youngest Mikaelson boy responded with a grin. "I just wanted to meet the famous hybrid myself."

"Well, you have." Gianina narrowed her eyes, feeling uncomfortable at how the man watched her, like she was a target. "I assume you have other women to creep out tonight."

"I didn't intend to creep you out but, i'm glad I made an impression, even if it was bad." Kol lifted the womans hand, placing a kiss against it as she locked her eyes on him, the Salvatore equating him to a sly and sneaky fox. "Have a nice party, Gia."

With that, he grinned, brushing past her as he walked up to Carol and Damon.

Gianina had felt Klaus staring at her for over an hour now, and she just couldn't ignore it anymore. A sigh escaped from her lips as she excused herself from her conversation, lifting up her dress slightly so she could walk. The hybrid made her way over to him, rolling her eyes as he smirked, believing he had won her over with his stares.

"Your family is really creepy." She commented, swiping his champagne from his hand. "First Kol being weird, and now you stalking me? It's not becoming of a leader to be so focused on something that's not his goal."

"... and what are you presuming my goal is, Gianina?" Klaus questioned with a raise brow, smiling at her silence. "You look stunning."

"Thank you." The Salvatore woman cleared her throat, taking in a swig of the champagne. "... and thank you for the invitation, i'm not exactly a factor in peace for Mystic Falls."

"Actually, it was mothers idea. The rest of us just agreed with her." The Mikaelson man lightly shrugged his shoulders. "Something about keeping us all in line, ya-da, ya-da. I stopped listening after awhile."

"Your mother knows about me?" Gianina raised a brow, making the man across from her laugh slightly in response.

"Of course she does, love. She was on the other side for a thousand years, and she's been watching my siblings and I for the entirety of it." Klaus nodded his head, finally agreeing with the girls previous statement. "Maybe we are creepy, us Mikaelsons."

"If everyone could gather please!" Elijah yelled, hitting his fork lightly against his glass.

"That's my cue." The Mikaelson man walked off without another word, taking a glass of champagne from a waiter on his way over.

Gianina walked over, placing her hand on the edge of the railing as Elijah began to speak.

"Welcome, thank you for joining us. You know, whenever my mother brings our family together like this, it's a tradition for us to commence the evening with a dance." As he spoke, Gia made eye contact with a blonde woman standing there, she assumed it was Esther but in that brief moment, all she felt was fear, it consumed her until the woman looked away and continued to listen to her son. "Tonight's pick is a century years old waltz so, if all of you could please find yourselves a partner, please join us in the ballroom."

Everyone began to clap, and made their way into the ballroom, Gia feeling someone grab her hand as she walked inside.

"Hello, brother." She quipped with a smile, before she started to laugh. "It's a bit sad to have to dance with your sister, isn't it?"

They joined the circle that started to dance, both of them following the steps in unison.

"It's even more sad you aren't declining isn't it?" He asked, smiling back at her, the two of them in sync. This reminded the girl of a time they cared for each other, and maybe the Mikaelsons did bring her closer to her brother in a way.

"I guess we are two very sad people." Gianina laughed, both siblings stepping sideways and bowing their heads at the pair ahead of them. "But it's an honor to have my brother be my first dance of the night."

"It's been awhile since we did this, hm?" Stefan raised a brow, his sister nodding her head. "Actually, if I remember correctly, since the twenties."

"Wild times." The Salvatore girl and her brother danced in circles as they spoke, for once not paying any mind to the drama around them, or the doom that was probably right around the corner. "Are you ready to get your dance with Elena?"

"What?" The boy questioned, his brows furrowed as he spun his sister around, the girl moving out of the way just in time for Elena to land in his arms.

Her ending up in the only other hybrids arms.

"Team Stefan, are you? I happen to be on his side with the whole Elena thing also. If she is to end up with any vampire, that is." Klaus commented, placing his hands on the girls waist as her arm rested on his shoulder.

"I don't think either of my brothers should be with her but, seeing Stefan's face when he's watching her with Damon reminds me of me." Gianina lightly cleared her throat. "If you must know."

The dance continued, and as it did, the two of them grew closer and closer.

"I've seen it all before, Tatia was always more in love with Elijah." Klaus's eyes grew almost sad for a moment, until he shook it away and continued to speak. "But, there have been others since then. What about you?"

"If you are asking if i've ever been in love with anyone besides Katherine, no but, i've gotten close." Gia's nose almost brushed up against the others hybrids, making her distance herself slightly. "Let's talk about something else, yeah?"

"Well, Rebekah wants a word with you, this whole dagger business has got her in a twist. She tried to kill Elena last night." The Mikaelson man informed the girl. "She's also come with that football player as a date, not that i'm sure why."

"He's as close to human as she'll ever get, I understand," Gianina lightly shrugged her shoulders, having gone out on dates with a few humans to feel some type of normality.

It never worked.

"... and why would anyone ever want to be human?"

Children, never being bloodthirsty, not having to deal with so much death in what is supposed to be an immortal, she could go on and on but, the girl stayed silent.

You couldn't explain the perks of being a human to someone who's life revolved around being a vampire.

Gianina had felt weird ever since she seen Elena go up to meet with Esther. Elijah had sad something about it to her, and she furrowed her brows at the fact that she was not included in the plan. Sure, if her brothers had asked her to help she would have declined but, she thought they'd at least keep her in the loop.

Maybe not.

"Good evening, ladies, and gentleman. Waiters are coming around with champagne. I invite you all to join me in raising a glass. It provides me with no greater joy than to see my family back together as one. I'd like to thank you all for being a part of this spectacular evening. Cheers." Esther spoke, holding up her glass to signal everyone to do the same.

"Cheers." Gianina repeated, holding up her glass before taking a small sip.

Once she did, the girl felt a hand rest on top of her shoulder, turning to see Elijah standing there, the Mikaelsons loved her that night.

"Do you know anything of what my mother spoke to Elena about?" He asked in a whisper, leveling himself to the girls ear.

"Nope, i'm out of the loop tonight. Why? Do you think something is wrong?" Gianina raised a brow as the two of them walked away from the crowd and walked outside, hoping nobody would hear them.

"I'm sure it's nothing but, i've had my suspicions about mother forgiving Niklaus for what he did to her." Elijah paused, pressing his hands together before he continued to speak. "When I asked Elena about their conversation, I could tell that she was lying, I could hear her heartbeat."

"Do you think that your mother is planning to kill Klaus?" Gia looked around carefully, relieved when nobody was around.

"I do not know what I believe." The Mikaelson man responded, the girls heart dropping.

All she could remember were the words you can't die unless I do.
