chapter forty three.

We used to be friends — The Dandy Warhols

Gianina was not at all excited about having to sit in the car with Elena and Damon for hours, but, the idea of seeing Jeremy is what made her join their trip. She wasn't really aware of her brother, or the doppelgängers motives, especially since they had just killed Finn, but she pushed it to the back of her mind. Seeing her best friend was much more important than the petty feuds between the Mikaelons and her brothers which she wasn't even involved with.

"So, how have you been?" Elena spoke up, looking into the back seat where Gianina laid, reading a book.

It was an odd time to start conversation, especially since they were close to their destination but, the Salvatore woman was bored, and decided to go along with the conversation.

"Do you mean before you and my brothers tried to kill me?" She raised a brow, shutting her book as the Gilbert girl tensed up in her seat.

"In our defense, we didn't really believe the whole linked to Klaus mumbo jumbo." Damon defended, shrugging his shoulders. "But now that all of us are linked to the Mikaelsons, we can't kill anyone. So, point one you."

"What a heartwarming response." Gia rolled her eyes slightly, looking out of the window. "Asshole."

"I'm really sorry how things have been working out." Elena commented, her eyes sad.

She cared about both Stefan and Damon, so the fact that she couldn't be close to their sister absolutely killed her.

"Let's just save the talking for when we get to Jer, okay?" Gianina kept her eyes staring out the window as she bit onto her fingernail.

After an uncomfortable few minutes, the trio had made it to the batting cages they knew Jeremy was. Apparently, he had been playing baseball a lot since moving, and had even gotten a dog. Gia couldn't help but note how much better he was without vampires in his life, and if she was honest, that kind of hurt her.

"There he is." Elena pointed down towards one of the cages as the group made it past a few people, all of them seeing the younger Gilbert in a red hoodie and jeans.

"Next time we compel him, remind me to make him better at baseball." Damon commented as they came to a stop, his sister rolling his eyes.

"Yeah, so not funny." Gianina spoke, pushing the older vampire's shoulder harshly as Elena walked off to talk to Jer.

"Elena?" The boys eyes lit up as he seen his sister, but a smile spread across his face when he seen his best friend. "Gia? What's wrong?"

"We have time to talk about it, just come give me a hug first." The Gilbert girl said, her arms outstretched as her brother ran around the gate and hugged her tightly.

Sometimes Gia wished her relationship with even one of her brothers was like that, but she knew it wasn't even close to possible.

"Yeah, we actually don't have time." Damon rolled his eyes, stuffing his hands into his pockets as the Gilbert siblings pulled away from each other.

"I missed you so much." Jeremy ignored the blue eyed vampire as he ran to Gia, picking the girl up off her feet.

"I missed you too, Jer." Gianina's face warmed up slightly as he put her down, the girl awkwardly looking around as she pushed her hair behind her ears.

"Great, now that all that is out of the way, we can get to business. Now that Gia is not connected to the Mikaelsons, she's team her again. Meaning, we can stop worrying about her and solve our real problem." Damon clapped his hands together. "We just found out that if you kill an original, you kill a whole bloodline. Problem is, we don't know which original is our original. Katherine made us, Rose made Katherine, we just need to know who made Rose."

"So, you traveled across the country to get me to talk to a dead vampire?" Jeremy questioned as the group of four began to all walk together.

"Dead vampire's redundant but yes." The elder Salvatore replied.

"They came for that." Gianina corrected, wearing a thin lipped smile.

If she was honest, she wasn't exactly sure that killing the Mikaelsons was a good idea. Maybe she started to feel connected to them now, or maybe she just thought the idea was completely dumb, either way, things were becoming more and more complicated. Maybe seeing her best friend is exactly what she needed to clear her head.

"I can't do it, I can talk to Anna and Vickie because I knew them. I've never even met Rose." Jeremy shrugged as he returned his head gear, everyone coming to a stop behind him.

"What good is you dying and coming back to life if you can't talk to a ghost when I need you to?" Damon scoffed, obviously annoyed.

Gia was equally annoyed, wanting to snap her brothers neck in front of everyone in the area.

"Rose spent a long time running from Klaus as well. She and Damon were close, so maybe we can use you as a connection." Elena suggested.

"Fine, fine but, can we do this later? My friend just got here and I want to introduce Gia, and yes, Damon, I actually have some." Jeremy laughed as he waved at his friend, taking the Salvatore girl gently by the wrist. "I'll call you two when we are done."

"Who is this friend of—" Gianina gripped tightly onto the Gilbert boys arm upon seeing Kol Mikaelson standing there with a bat in his hands.

He swung his arm back and hit Damon, knocking him to the ground.

"Jeremy, stay back, he's an original!" Elena instructed, the sound of her heart thumping loud enough for anyone to hear.

"What?" The Gilbert boy questioned in shock.

"He's right, just stay behind me, okay?" Gianina held her arm up, making sure that her best friend was completely safe.

"Sorry, mate but, we aren't buds." Kol commented as he made his way over to a rack of bats. "Lovely to see you again, Gianina. I'm under strict instructions from my brother to not harm you, but test my patience and I will not hesitate."

The Mikaelson picked up a bat and made his way over to Damon, but he was too slow and the Salvatore man took the wooden bat beside him, broke it in half, and plunged it into his stomach.

"Thanks for the help, sister." The Salvatore commented, rolling his eyes.

"You were obviously doing just fine." Gianina felt Jeremy's grip on her hand tighten in fear, the girl letting her thumb run over the side of his hand. "We should go."

"Did you kill him?" The younger Gilbert asked shakily.

"No, but it'll give us a head start, come on." Damon instructed, everyone taking one last look at the body before slowly walking off.

If one thing was for sure, things were getting serious.

Gia figured it was best to get her own room away from her brother as the group waited for answers on Rose. Jeremy had gotten into contact with her, and she knew nothing about who their original sire was. She instructed them to wait as she tried to figure something out, and it had been hours since then.

"Come in." She called out as she felt a light knock on the door, the girl smiling as she seen Jeremy come in her room. "Hey."

"Hey, I uh—... I just wanted to hang out. It's been so long and it's just really good to see you." The Gilbert boy admitted as he shut the door behind him. "I hope that's okay."

"Yeah, of course." Gianina used her hand to pat the empty side of her bed, her friend laying next to her as they both looked up at the ceiling.

"Do you know what's going on with Damon and Elena?" Jeremy questioned after a few moments of silence, letting out a sigh.

"They—... well, I don't even think they know but, last time I checked Stefan was really upset about it." Gia shrugged her shoulders lightly, letting one hand rest at her side while the other fell to her chest. "I haven't exactly been the closest to my brothers since you left... or ever."

"I'm sorry." The Gilbert boy responded simply his eyes not leaving the stained ceiling above them.

"What do you have to be sorry for?" Gianina looked beside her way he was laying with a frown, tilting her head to the side.

"I'm sorry that you have to deal with that, you just deserve better." Jeremy shrugged, turning his head towards the girl. "and i'm sorry I left, because I know you needed me. I definitely needed you."

"It's not your fault, believe me." Gia smiled lightly, shaking her head. "You're here now, right?"

"Yeah, and i'm not leaving." The Gilbert boy nodded, letting his hand fall down to his side, his fingertips grazing against the Salvatore girls. "Oh—..uhm, do you want to go get snacks? Yeah, snacks sounds good right now."

He pushed himself up from the bed, Gianina clearing her throat lightly before doing the same.

"I really hope this vending machine has edible food, I can't handle stale chips right now." She joked, elbowing her friend as they went out of her room.

"At least one thing in there has to be new." Jeremy laughed, the pair stopping in their tracks as they seen their siblings. "Elena?"

"Jeremy—"

The Gilbert boy looked in the other direction, as if someone was talking to him which made the pause in the conversation extremely awkward.

"Rose found Mary, she lives in Kansas." He spoke, before turning on his heel and walking off.

It was obvious the rest of this trip was going to be even more tense than before.

Gianina stared at Mary's house with her fists balled. She didn't know how she felt about this entire trip, and part of her even wanted things to get ruined. Sure, maybe that was selfish but, Klaus and Rebekah were two of the only people in the world that cared about her, except Jeremy, of course.

Being in the middle of things was hard.

"You stay here too, Gia. So you can watch him." Damon instructed, doing his signature eye move.

"Why? So you two can go make out again?" Jeremy asked angrily, his fists forming into a ball.

"No, because we can't let you get hurt, and I don'r trust her." The elder Salvatore shrugged, turning his back toward them. "We'll be back soon."

"That's rich coming from him." Gianina noted as her brother and Elena walked away, the girl leaning up against the car.

"Yeah, well, your brother is a dick." Jeremy folded his arms across his chest and did the same, staring at the house.

Gia's phone rang in her pocket for what felt like the millionth time that night, making her sigh. She slowly took it out of her pocket, and upon seeing the name klaus written across her screen, she ignored it. She was honestly scared to talk to him, especially after his proposition to move away with him.

... because what could she say?

"Answer him." Jeremy pointed his head at the phone, obviously annoyed.

"No, it's f—"

"He's not going to stop calling, just answer." The Gilbert boy shrugged.

"I—... fine." Gia sighed before walking over to the other side of the car, waiting a moment before she answered the phone. "Hello?"

"Ah, finally. You answered, love. I was beginning to get worried." Klaus spoke over the phone, no doubt wearing his infamous grin. "I see you've connected with your brother again, it's a shame that your plans won't be working out."

"I went on a road trip to see Jeremy, that's all." Gianina paused for a moment, furrowing her brows. "What do you mean ruined—"

"Ah, your little friend Mary is dead."
