Ever since I was little I've had a secret. Never told anyone except my mom. She was the one who found out. My moms my best friend when it comes to this. Not even my best friend (ybf/n) knows. People think I'm insane because if the secretiveness I have over it. The secret is so unbelievable that people probably would think I was insane even if I told them.
My name is (y/n) (l/n) and I'm a mermaid.
I have to tell myself that every day. I have to remind myself to keep my legs dry and my tail away.
Most people wouldn't understand. I usually just pass off my discomfort for water as fear of drowning or something like that but it's really that I don't want to be seen, taken away and experimented on. But that's how it's been my whole life, a secret, to everyone, until now.

"Hey y/n, you good?" Colby asked waving his hand in front of my blanking face.
"Yeah Fine why?" I asked shaking myself out of my head.
"You just keep dazing off into the view of the ocean." He said pointing to it. "I'm trying to tell you the story about that girl I met?"
"Oh yeah. Go ahead, I'm listening, sorry."
"It's fine. But anyway..."
he told me a boring story about how he met up with this girl and how they had a good time.
I just rolled my eyes subconsciously and pretended to actually care. I wasn't jealous per se, more just over about him talking about girls to me that I've never met nor care about.
"But yeah, it's was nice." He finished.
"That's nice! Glad you had a good time!" I smiled.
"Thanks." He said. "Well that was my secret of the year how about you y/n? Got any secrets?"
I spit my water out. "What?! Secrets!? I don't have any! Why would you think that?! That's crazy!" I said worried.
"What happened now?" Colby sighed.
"What are you talking about? I told you I don't have secrets!!"
"I'm not a movie character. I'm not dumb, I know that tone. You're hiding something. What is it?" He asked.
"It's nothing." I shrugged. I was fiddling with my hands.
He looked at me as I looked down and reached for my hand.
"I'm your best friend. You can tell me anything." He said quietly.
I can't believe I was actually considering it. Telling him I'm a mermaid. But I'm scared he'll be scared and then leave me.
"We're always gonna be best friends right? Even if some crazy unbelievable stuff happens? Nothing could break us apart right?" I asked worried. "Because if I tell you, I'm scared you won't want to be around me anymore."
"Nothing can be that bad for me to stop being your friend."
"Okay... come with me."
As we walked home I was nervous. Really nervous.
I walked into my bathroom and he sat down on the sink.
"What I'm about to show you is gonna stick with you forever, and is gonna have to be a secret forever. Got it? You can't tell anyone, not even your crazy little hook up girls." I spat.
"Yes."
"I can trust you right?"
"Yes! Now would you show me?"
I ran the bath and took off my shirt and shorts. I had a swimsuit on for those people who were concerned.
I stopped the bath and turned to him.
"In less then a minute your entire friendship with me will be completely different." I told him.
He nodded in a mix of confusion and terror.
"Three." He counted.
"Two." I said
"One." He stated. I stepped a foot into the bath and sat down.
In a couple seconds water orbs formed around my legs turning to jello and then into scales. My body grew another two inches and my tail appeared.
I looked over at Colby who's face was in total shock.
"This is my secret. I'm a mermaid."
"Wow. T-that's insane. How long have you been like this?"
"Since I was about thirteen."
"W-Wow. I-I don't know what to say."
"It's okay. I get the shock. I was there once." I smiled and then frowned. "You're not gonna sell me out are you? You know what they'd do to me right?"
"There is no way I'm telling anyone about this! Someone wrong finding this out could kill you, and I'm not gonna have my best friend, who's more cool now then ever, getting killed." He said seriously, almost gritting his teeth.
"Thank you." I smiled, almost crying of happiness. He came over and sat by me. He looked at my tail a lot.
"It's so pretty!" He smiled.
"Thanks." I laughed.
"You're so cool." He said looking at me. He stopped. His smile dropped and he just looked at me. Kind of with lust. "You're so beautiful." He whispered.
"Thanks." I half smile.
"Well now that I know, can we taco swimming in the ocean together? I wanna see how this whole shabang works."
"Sure. I just have to drain this bath and dry off."
"Okay, I'll help."
We dried me off and I turned back.
I got out of the bath and walked out of my house. We walked to the beach and made sure no one was around. I ran into the ocean and dived.

Colby's pov
She was so beautiful. I really love her. She's so perfect. I always talk about other girls but I want her.
I watched her run and dive into the waves to hide herself. I couldn't wait to get enough courage to ask her to date me. I have a little secret, but I guess she understands that.
