Mitu(short for Mitali): So Shayantani, tell me more about this red lady? Like, why do people like her so much? Apart from her looks she has nothing much to boast about.She is a little dumb too. Then how on earth is she so popular?

Mitali had spent all her life in Dehradun, where people were liked because of their skills not beauty. This was something new to her.

Shanu: That is what happens here, Mitali. People judge you based on how you look. Like that's not even in our hands, but still people would that. I honestly don't know why.

Mitu: That's something new.....and weird.

Shanu: Tapasya is the Queen B of this college. She has been for like 5 years. She has good looks, money, and practically everything a guy wishes to see in a girl. She is very arrogant, though.

Mitu:(sarcastically) Yeah, I got a glimpse of that.

Shanu: Yeah, right. You know, other than the professors, the only people I have seen her talk to nicely is Adi and Ruhaan.

Mitu: Oh, about that. What is up with this Ruhaan guy? I mean is he like her tail or something?

Shanu: I don't know yaar. Sometimes that seems true. But again, if you have a crush on someone, you always like to be around him/her.

Mitu: Don't know about that. I never had one.

Shanu: Ok,... you're giving me shocks one after another. First you said that you weren't in the least attracted to Adi and second, you're telling me you never had a crush! Dude....

Mitu: Look, there were not so many options. The town I used to live in was so small, that every other person knew my name. All of them were like my brothers. So, never had a chance to develop a crush or something.

Shanu: Ooo, I think I need to visit your place.

Mitu: Sure, anytime. You're always gonna be special as you're the first ever friend of mine in Mumbai.

Shanu: Aww, that's so nice of you. Surely, Mitu, we'll grow up to be great friends, you'll see.

Saying that they high-fived each other and went out of the canteen.

Mitu: Oops, I almost forgot. I need to collect my timetable and stuff from the office.

Shanu:(glancing at her watch) But I have a class now, re. And I need to attend it. It's kind of an important one.

Mitu: That's fine,yaar. Just tell me the direction I'll find it out myself.

Shanu: Ok,then go straight , then turn left. It's towards the end of first floor.

Mitu: Alright..(after a moment of thought) Hey, if I need to contact you, what would I do?

Shanu(dramatically):Just remember me and I'll be there.

Mitu: O my God , that's so cheesy!But, seriously, how am I gonna contact you?

Shanu: Here, take down my number.

They exchanged their numbers and waved each other goodbye.And went on their opposite paths....

Ananya and Daksh walked their way to the university campus.The air was chilling cold, after all it was the middle of February.As they reached Ganguly sir's office, they found him sitting in his chair, and nervously arranging some papers on the table. Ananya knocked on the door.

Anu: Sir, may we come in?

Sir: Yeah...yeah, oh Ananya and You.... who are you?

Daksh looked confused while Ananya spoke with an effort.

Ananya: Sir...he is...uh...Daksh. You told me to pick him from the station.

Sir: Oh...yeah,yeah, right.Don't  mind me , Daksh. ActuallyI'm so busy in these office work that I almost forgot.

Daksh: It's fine, sir.

Sir:But I must you've grown tall. My,my....it's been years since I've seen you. How is Dad?

Daksh( glancing at Ananya): He's good, sir.

Anu: Um.. sir, can I leave? I have to attend a class.

Sir:Will you do me one more favor ? Please show Daksh the office, will you?

Ananya reluctantly agreed.She gave him the slightest nod and they both went out.Ananya was quiet as a mouse, as she sensed that Daksh was not a public person. Gallivanting around him would be a waste of time. They were just passing the canteen, when a girl shouted from the back," Bhaiya!!!!!!"

They spun around to find a girl,dressed in white jeans and a black crop top running towards them.

A smile spread on Daksh's face while Ananya was still confused as to what was happening.The girl enfolded him in a tight hug and said,"Finally!".

Ananya stood there gazing at the happy brother-sister union. She smiled lightly.They pulled back from the hug.

Girl: You can't even imagine Bhaiya, how happy I am!

Daksh: Don't get too hyped up , Naina. It's only me.

Naina: Yes, but it's you after so long. God, I'm so happy.

Ananya felt left out in the conversation, so she said,

Anu: Hey, Daksh, umm..... I guess your sister can show you the office. Sorry, but I have to take a leave. My class is gonna start any minute.So..I'll take my leave.

Daksh and Naina both turned to look at her.

Daksh: oh, yeah....i must've consumed so much of your time. Yeah, you can attend your class now. I'll go with my sister.

Ananya nodded and turned to leave.

"Wow, not even a ' Thank you, it was so nice of you to help me'.Isn't he great?" Ananya thought.

She had taken a few steps when Daksh's voice echoed from the back,

Daksh: Btw, thanks for all the help. And sorry for all the trouble.

Ananya turned and smiled slightly and answered,'No problem.'

 Did he just read her mind?

After a long day, it was finally time to go home. Shayantani was the last person left in the class. She was packing her stuff, when she saw Sahil stride across the class. She hurriedly left her things and followed him to wherever he was headed to. She found him climbing the steps to the terrace. It was a place where students were not allowed to go. Shanu wondered what had gotten into him that he was doing this. She quietly followed him up, without even thinking about the consequences.Without a loud thud, he burst open the doors of the terrace and went inside. Shanu shuddered in silence.

'What was he gonna do?' Shanu thought.

Taking slow and quiet steps, she went inside and found him standing at the edge of the terrace. Her eyes widened with fear. One step and everything might go wrong. She tried to speak but words didn't come out. Her heart was beating fast. She knew she had to do something to stop him. To make him understand that this was not an option. But her legs were numb due to the fear.

'This is what you want, don't you?' Sahil shouted on top of his voice. The only fact was, other than Shanu no one  was listening to him. Shanu gulped in nervousness.She took quiet steps towards him, fear engulfing her mind.She reached for his hand and gathering herself, she held it tightly and pulled him back down. Sahil struggled to keep balance.Once they were safe, Shanu shouted,

Shanu: Are you fucking insane? What the heck were you doing?

Sahil breathed heavily but didn't say a word.

Shanu: Do you even know ki agar tum waha se gir jate to kya hota? Have you lost your mind?

Sahil: To kya karta? Everybody thinks I'm a loser.Everybody to choro, mera baap hi mujhe ek loser samajhta hai. What is the point of living? Aisi zindagi kyu jiyu jo worthless hai? 

Shanu hadn't expected such an outburst. She calmed herself down and spoke with an effort,

Shanu: Sahil, suicide koi option nahi hai . Ise na tumhe koi fayeda hone wala hai na kisi aur ko? Please meri bat suno....

Sahil: Mujhe kisi ki koi bat nahi sunni hai. I'm done with this.

Shanu: Sahil...par...

Sahil: Shayantani, you don't even know mai kis ghutan bhari zindagi mein ji raha hu. I can't anymore...

Shanu's heart ached seeing him break down like this. She could understand the pain he had to go through everyday. It would have been a nightmare for her too. But was there nothing that she could help him with?

Sahil(looking at Shanu): Look, it isn't your fault that my life sucks. Don't overthink too much.Just let me die.

Shanu: Sahil, I could never do anything like that. You are like a friend to me. How can I see you in pain?

Sahil: I don't deserve to be a friend.

Shanu: No, you do.You can be a great friend if you want to.

Sahil : How are so sure about that?

Shanu: Just a feeling.

Sahil looked at her, unconvincingly.

Shanu: Do you wanna be my friend or not?

Sahil:(after a moments' thought) Alright.

Shanu smiled widely.She extended her hand towards him.

Shanu: Friends?

Sahil looked at her hand and then at her.He took it and smilingly agreed, ' Friends.'
