Chpt 37: Paper Rings

We took a carriage to the Queens palace. Emma caught my hand tightly as she saw the place. It was even bigger than anyone could have imagined. There were large flowers, peacocks and people everywhere.

We made our way inside as Edwina went with her mother to freshen up. Emma, Kate and i made our way into the large room where the wedding was set to be held. The service looked beautiful.

I looked around the room until i finally spotted Benedict. I dragged Emma towards him. "Mr Bridgerton, i would like you to meet my sister, Miss Emma Bennet" i said. Benedict turned around and gave Emma a small bow.

"Miss Bennet, it's so lovely to meet you. Juliet speaks very fondly of you... When she finally does speak of her life back home" he mumbled. My bright smile began to fade.

"I'm sorry?" i questioned not understanding what he meant. "Nothing... I would like to stay but i believe i should go find my brother" he said as he walked off. Emma gave me a concerned look.

"What was that all about?" she asked. "I don't know" i said as i watched him walk off. I brushed off his rudeness as i showed Emma to her seat. "I'll come back to you the minute the service is over" i said.

"I can handle myself Juliet. Although this is far from the farm, i believe i can keep up this persona for a couple of hours as you have kept it up for weeks" she whispered. I gave her a small smile as i made my way back to Kate.

Lady Mary handed me some flowers as she told me where i must go. "You walk down the aisle and Kate will follow. That is all you must do" she said giving me a small pat on the back. I nodded as i walked up the aisle.

Anthony was standing in front of the priest as i gave him a wink of reassurance. I saw Anthony's eyes began to search the crowd of people who were sitting. His face slightly dropped as he saw Emma. She gave him a small wave as he smiled back.

Even thought there feelings were very much gone, there would always be a friendship.

As Kate walked up the aisle, i saw Anthony's mouth drop. She looked gorgeous, but he was making it very obvious that he was gawking at her.

I coughed causing Anthony to snap out of his daze. Edwina and Lady Mary began walking up the aisle as everyone stood up. Anthony put on a fake smile as he saw her.

I gave Edwina a small smile as my eyes drifted over to Benedict. He was staring straight at the aisle, purposely not looking at me. I sighed slightly. I knew something was wrong.

But right now was not about me. It was about Edwina. I put on a forced grin as i gave her an encouraging nod. Everyone sat back down as the priest began to speak.

"Dearly beloved, we are here in this congregation to join together this man and this woman in holy matrimony."

As the priest continued to speak, i saw Anthony's eyes drift between Edwina and Kate. Suddenly, he seemed to be staring at Kate. I gave him a frustrated look but it was of no use. He was in a trance.

"My lord?" the archbishop said. Anthony did not listen. "My lord?" the archbishop said louder. Anthony finally snapped out of his day dream as he looked at the priest. His eyes drifted back to Kate but this time, Edwina noticed.

She looked behind her and had a confused but sorrowful look. Kate began playing with her bracelet as she ignored him. "The archbishop would like you to repeat, my lord, after him" Edwina said.

"Yes of course" Anthony said as his eyes were still on Kate. Suddenly, Kates bracelet flew of her wrist. Kate and Anthony both went to grab it off the floor.

"Allow me" Anthony said handing her the bracelet. I looked at Edwina who began to breath quicker and quicker. She knew. She finally figured it out. I saw it in her eyes. She could not ignore this anymore.

Anthony stood back up in front of Edwina who was now looking at him as if she was screaming inside. Kate flashed me a look as i shook my head.

Edwina began breathing heavily as she gasped for air. She was in shock. "Miss Edwina are you-"
"I need a moment!" she shouted causing everyone to gasp. She suddenly ran out of the room. Her mother and Kate ran after her.

"What has happened to my wedding!" The Queen exclaimed. "The bride seems to have run away ma'am" one of her footmen said.

I gave Anthony an angry look as i ran after her. I made my way into the room Edwina had ran into. She was pacing up and down the room.

"Edwina it is just nerves! The viscount will understand. You just need some tea in your stomach to help with the nerves. Kate, will you please go fetch some tea" Lady Mary said.

"It is not tea that i want!" Edwina shouted. "What i want, is the truth!" Kate opened her mouth to speak but no words came out.

Edwina scoffed. "Oh what, suddenly your words fail you, sister?" Edwina snapped. "Perhaps i should leave" i said backing out of the room. "No! Juliet stay. Stay and hear what my sister has to say!" Edwina shouted causing me to stand still in fear that she would shout at me again.

"Juliet, i am not sure what is going on. Kate?" Lady Danbury said. "I shall tell you what is going on, mama" Edwina said. "After a lifetime of filling my head with nonsense of all this great, gallant notions and looks between lovers-"

"Edwina i-" Kate began. "You have feelings for him! All this time, you wanted him for yourself!" Edwina exclaimed. "No, that is not true" Kate said.

"Oh, you cannot deny it now, Kate. How could i have been such a fool? You lied to me again and again. You... You told me! You told me we had put all secrets to rest, but no!" Edwina spat.

Kate stood there in shock. Edwina was panting for air in between sobs. "I fooled myself into believing you had only the purest of intentions, that your only desire was for me to be happy."

"And you are no ones fool Edwina, that is the truth!" Kate said. Edwina stormed towards her. "Do you love him?" she asked. "What?" is all Kate could get out.

"You told me you hated him. But that only meant your feelings... Your feelings were strong. Do you love him?" she questioned. Kate said nothing.

Lady Mary shook her head in disbelief. "That is enough. No good can come from this at present. Let us all take a moment and calm ourselves" Lady Mary said.

Edwina fell onto the chair and began sobbing in her hands. Kate tried to comfort her but Lady Mary stood in her way. "You have kept so very much from me. Go. Anywhere else Kate!" Lady Mary exclaimed.

Kate ran out of the room, pushing into my shoulder as she left. I was about to chase after her, but i thought she better be left alone. "Juliet, would you please get some tea. Not that English tea, our tea, right away!" Lady Mary shouted.

I hastily ran out of the room and began looking through Lady Mary's bag. I found the Indian tea leaves they had brought from India. I began trying to make the tea as Kate had showed me.

I tried my best to make the tea, but it did not look how it was supposed to. I balanced the two cups on a plate and carried it into Edwina's room.

On my way there, i tripped over the carpet causing the tea to spill everywhere. I tried to savour what was left, but there was only a drop. I cursed to myself as i realised i was only makimg Edwina's situation worse.

I gave up on the tea and ran into one of the Queens many rooms. I shut the door and put my head against the wall. I heard a small knock as i looked at the door.

I sighed in relief as i saw Emma enter the room. "Thank god, i thought you were-" i began to say but cut myself off as i saw Benedict behind her. I groaned as i put my head in my hands.

"I'll leave you two to it" Emma said closing the door. Benedict sat down in-front of me and laid his head against the wall. "Did you enjoy the wedding?" i asked.

He laughed. "Quite eventful" he said. We sat silence. "Why were you so rude to me in front of my sister? And why have you not visited me since you went to art school?" i asked. He sighed. "Because Juliet, i want to know you. And i feel as if you are hiding something from me" he said.

My stomach flipped. "I'm not" i mumbled. "See! Right there. You may be a good liar, but i can tell you are lying. Just tell me!" he exclaimed.

"I'm not hiding anything from you Benedict! It's just... I love you. So much. And sometimes, i feel like if you see... The real me... You won't love me anymore" i said.

"Juliet" he said grabbing my hand. "I love you for you. Nothing will change that." "Nothing, huh?" i questioned.

"Nothing, will make me love you any less."

I wanted to tell him. I needed to tell him. But i wasn't ready for him to find out. I wasn't ready for there to even be a chance of loosing him. He leaned in and kissed me deeply.

"Are you sure that is all you are hiding from me?" he asked. I hesitated for a moment. "I'm sure." He nodded as he kissed me again.

"Do you know what... This wedding may be shit... But i think we'd through a better one" he said. I leaned away from him. "Our wedding?" i questioned with laughter.

"I'm serious Juliet." My eyes grew wider as Benedict began to go down on one knee. "Now, i may not have a ring, but-" he said grabbing a piece of paper from his pocket.

He began shaping the paper into a paper ring. "I have this" he said with a smirk. I let out a laugh as tears filled my eyes.

"Juliet Bennet, would you do me the most mighty honour, of being my wife?"

I nodded as i knew no words would come out of my mouth. He put the paper ring on my finger as i embraced him tightly.

He began kissing my face all over as i laughed loudly. "Now come on, we have to deal with my brothers mess" he said putting out his hand.

I took his hand in mine, and wished i never had to let go.
