Chpt 21: The Opera
I slept in Beths bed as it was the first night we arrived and there was a storm. Beth always slept in my bed when there was a storm ever since she was little. To be completely honest, the storm wasn't the reason i wanted to sleep in her bed.
The whole night i just lay awake, watching her breathe. Every time her chest went still my heart stopped, but then she'd take a breath in and i'd take a sigh of relief.
The next morning, I got out of Beths bed after not sleeping a wink. As i walked downstairs, i saw Simon standing at the bottom of the staircase. "Simon? Your back!" i said running to embrace him. "I am, for the moment anyways" he said.
"How is Daphne?" i asked. Simon looked at the floor. "What's wrong?" i asked. "Miss Bridgerton is well, she's with her family due to the scandal with her brother" he said still looking at the floor.
I knew something had happened due to the fact he had called her "Miss Bridgerton" even though they were now married. But i did not want to pry so i didn't question it.
"How is your sister?" he asked wanting to change the conversation. "Lady Danbury mentioned she was ill, has she gotten any better?". "She is fine, she's upstairs resting" i said faking a smile. "But has she gotten any better?" he asked again. I knew that Beth had actually gotten worse but i did not want to admit it.
"She's feeling good, that's all that matters" i said not answering the question. He gave me a sympathetic look and held my hand. Overtime Simon has become some sort of a brother to me. I appreciate him for sticking by me through all the lies and messiness that this season has brought.
"Will you and Daphne be staying here?" i asked. "No actually, i just wanted to check in on you and your sister. I was on the way to set up Hastings house. Should i be seeing you at the opera tonight" he asked. "Oh i don't think so, i should really stay here with Beth" i said.
Simon nodded and said his goodbyes. I decided to make tea for Beth and bring her some breakfast. "Good morning" i said softly waking Beth up. "Morning" Beth replied groggily.
I handed Beth her breakfast and she took a sip of tea. Beth quickly spat it out and made a face of disgust. "God, what maid made that tea? Its absolutely horrid" she said. I looked at her with an offended look and the dots connected in her head.
"Excuse me?" i said. "God, i'm sorry Juliet but i must ask you, never ever make tea again" she said. "Well, if you must know Benedict happens to love my tea whenever i make it" i said. "Well then he must really love you because that disgusting" she said with laughter.
I was taken back by her comment. Beth saw my reaction and realised what she had said. "Oh, Juliet i apologise. I thought he was the man Emma was talking about" she said. "No, no Beth it's fine it's just... Benedict and i have not said those words that's all" i said awkwardly.
Beth gave me a teasing look. "We'll i like him. If you are to marry anyone i will only accept him" she said. I chuckled. "I'm serious Juliet. You always seem to be yourself around him. And, i can tell he loves you" she said. I shook me head.
"Well i don't know about that last part Beth" i said with a fake laugh. "What?" she said in concern. "Nothing" i said shaking my head.
"Would you like to sneak into the kitchen tonight and search for sweets? I believe Lady Danbury is attending the opera and the maids will be home" i said. "Your not going?" she asked.
"No, i'd rather be here with you" i said. Beth looked down at her hands fidgeting. "Juliet, i don't want your whole life to change just because i am ill. You have to go. Plus, you'll be with Benedict" she said. "You really do like him huh?" i said with a chuckle.
"Please go. I'll feel like a burden otherwise" she pleaded. "I don't know Beth, i don't want you to be alone" i said. She gave me pleading eyes and i scoffed. "Fine" i said finally giving in. Beth clapped in excitement. "Let me pick out your dress" she said.
Beth picked out a purple dress as she said it was "my colour". She helped do my hair and fixed my light makeup.
"Miss Bennet, it's time to leave" Lady Danbury said poking her head through the door. I tucked Beth into bed and handed her the book she was reading. "So, your almost finished it then?" i asked.
"Yes, the farm boy and the princes still haven't gotten together!" she said in annoyance. I chuckled. "Well then you better finish it quick to see what happens" i said.
As i was walking out of the room Beth called my name. "Juliet" she said. I turned my head. "Don't let him go" she said. "Your reading to many romance novels" i said with a chuckle. She laughed. "Just, go for it" she said. I nodded my head. "Now finish your book and tell me what happens when i'm back" i said as i left.
When we got to the opera, everyone was chatting, drinking and laughing. Although i did not like that opera very much, i liked the atmosphere. Everyone coming together to listen to god awful music but at least everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
I spotted Simon and Daphne across the room and walked over to them. I couldn't help but feel the tension between Daphne and Simon as i got over. "Juliet, How are you!" Daphne said as she embraced me. "I'm fine thank you, how are you?" i said back.
"Im doing well thank you. Simon told me about your sister, i'm so sorry. Is she doing well?" she asked. "She's doing quite well, she's back at Lady Danbury's manor finishing up a book right now" i said with a smile.
We small talked for a while until i saw Benedict by himself drinking a glass of wine. "If you'll excuse me" i said giving Daphne and Simon a small bow as i made my way over to him.
"Well if it isn't Juliet Bennet at the opera. I thought you hated this type of music" Benedict said in amusement. "I do but Beth forced me to come. I think i'm coddling her to much" i said.
Benedict turned his back to me, sneakily handing me a glass of wine as he knew Lash Danbury did not allow me to drink. I took a sip of it and spat it out immediately in disgust. Benedict chuckled and we made our way to our booth.
Benedict and i sat in Lady Danbury's booth as we thought it would cause a scandal if i sat with the whole Bridgerton family.
I know i said i hated opera music but this time it wasn't that bad. I think i finally understood what the opera was. It wasn't a bunch of people screaming and making odd noises it was the sound people make before words. It was as if that was their way of communicating their feelings.
I looked to Benedict and he was staring at the opera singers. "Follow me" i said as i left the booth. Benedict turned his head swiftly and followed me out. I guided him outside onto the terrace and took a deep breath of the fresh air.
"So... Did you just want to get away from the opera or?" Benedict questioned. I turned and looked at him. There was silence. "What's the matter?" he asked. I looked at him trying to find the words. It was then i thought of Beths words. "Don't let him go".
I grabbed him and kissed him passionately. Benedict was taking back by my gesture but kissed me back.
"I think i love you" i said suddenly. Benedict went quiet for a moment and my heart dropped realising he may not feel the same. A smirk slowly crept onto Benedicts face.
"I think i love you too" he said. I chuckled lightly. "I think i have loved you ever since i met you...And i think i'll never stop" he said.
My head started beating quicker and quicker He put his hands on my face and just stared at me. This was it. This was the moment i have been waiting for since we met.
Suddenly, Lady Danbury, Miss Bridgerton, Daphne and a maid came out onto the terrace. I moved away from Benedict quickly breaking free of his touch.
Then, Benedict slowly took my hand as to say it was okay for them to know. I smiled at him softly. "Miss Bennet" Lady Danbury began to say. "Yes?" i said with a chuckle. "A maid from the house has just came with news" she began.
My bright smile slowly started to fade. "Yes?" i asked more serious. There was silence. "I'm so sorry" is all Lady Danbury could get out.
It was in that moment, i knew. I knew what had happened. I knew i should have never left Beth alone. I knew she hadn't finished her book she so desperately wanted to finish. I knew she was gone.
I could feel all my emotions making there way out of my body. I felt my breath leave my body as i fell to the ground. Benedict tried to comfort me by hugging my weak body as i sobbed.
My sobs were so loud i could tell the whole opera could hear but i simply did not care. I had lost my best friend, and i was not there for her when she needed me most.
