Chapter 31 - The Second Chance
Christian's POV
“Who knows? Maybe I can turn illusions into reality with a little magic,” I paused a bit, “love.”
“It doesn't make any sense, Chris,” she tore her gaze away from mine.
I stood up and sat beside her.
“Because love doesn't make sense, sunshine. It's always meant to be like that; dumb yet beautiful,” I said in a possibly soothing voice.
“Whoever said love can be complete and that forever exists, is a fool. No love is complete. Every love story is incomplete,” she reasoned back.
“Exactly,” I thumbed my fist on my palm, “Love stories are incomplete, not love.”
“You're not getting my point, Chris.”
“Maybe I don't want to. What does it take to fall in love, anyway? Nothing, it just happens,” I shrugged.
“But no matter what either of us is going to end up alone. I mean it always falls apart in the end. Everyone ends up alone, in the end,” her voice was low and I hung my head over my chest, focusing on the floor.
“I'll make your forever come true,” I said, looking up at her.
“Let's get it this way,” she paused, “say, you have a fairytale love story and shit and then you happily spend your lives together and you grow old together. Finally, your wife dies.”
I was studying her with curious and narrowed eyes.
“There you go. You're alone again. Waiting for death alone. Living with her memories and hurting inside. Missing her touch, scent, voice and what not? Finally, you end up alone, literally. So there's nothing called forever,” she concluded.
“The time that I have already spend together with her until she died, was our forever,” I reasoned, my pupils, dilated, “Maybe. Maybe I'll be hurting but I'll know the love was worth it. The time, the memories, experiences and everything that we'd share we'll be worth it.”
She slightly shook her head and gave a defeated sigh.
“Come on, don't give up on me that easily. I promise I'll never give up on you.” I shot her puppy dog eyes.
She looked at me with confusion and then walked to the bookshelf. She pulled out a diary and then carefully picked out a folded paper from it.
“Read it,” she said, handing me the paper.
I recognised it as the letter I gave her on Christmas Eve while we were still a junior in high school. I unfolded the paper and started reading it.
“Whenever I look at you, I see the whole of my life ahead. Sometimes, I look at you and just wonder how I got to be so damn lucky. Ever since we met, I've known that we are special and now that your name is etched on my heart, you can never ever exeunt. I wonder how we are destined to be together. We parted but we reconciled in a stronger bond than ever. I fall in love again and over again but only with you, each day, every moment. I just go through the same love. Falling and falling over again...and when I fall in love with you, I love each trace of your skin and each freckle of light in your eyes. I fall in love with the way you look while you're sleeping and the way your mouth curves up when you say my name. I can be difficult to love but for me loving you is as easy as breathing. It's Christmas and what I ask as my gift is never do give up on me and I won't give up on you. Never ever till my last breath. I love you. Merry Christmas love," I finished.
“It was you. Wasn't it?” she asked under scrutinising look.
“What?” I asked, stupidly.
“You wrote it.”
“Yeah,” I smiled, “obviously, I did.”
“Why do you ask?” I wiggled my eyebrows.
“This letter, I have read it a thousand times trying to get back at least something but I didn't...,” she trailed off.
“It's alright,” I shot her a convincing look.
“But it makes me feel warm, though, everytime I read it,” she admitted.
“Okay,” I grinned.
“So, I think,” she paused, “I can give you and me a second chance.”
She smiled and I grinned. I stood up and kept the paper aside. I cupped her cheeks, “So, can we just start it from where we paused Friday night?” I flirted.
“Well, I don't remember where we left off,” she smirked.
“Sure, you don't,” I narrowed my eyes, “then I'm afraid we gotta seal this second chance with a kiss.”
“Erm, I can think about it...”
Before she could finish, I leaned it, my lips lightly brushed against hers. The contact was as light as a feather but shot electricity through the veins. I could feel her breath pause but a loud thump broke us from our trance.
“Fuck it,” I muttered under my breath as she giggled and tried to get away.
“I guess whoever it is, can wait,” I said pulling her closer again but the thumps went louder and they could just break in any moment.
“For fuck's sake, wait,” I yelled as I walked over to the door with Blaire tagging me.
“Happy birthday, Christian,” the voices yelled on my face as soon as I opened the door.
“Guys,” I whined as I saw all of them at the door.
“Wait, are we being cock-blockers?” Sophia guessed really fast and said it bluntly.
“Maybe,” Duncan eyed suspiciously.
“Nothing like that guys,” Blaire waved it off casually.
“Are we really doing this childish shit?” I asked as I was getting ready to blow the candles for the second time that evening.
“I doubt we aren't,” Adrian hung an arm around my shoulders.
“You know, how much I hate these,” I directed at Duncan.
“and that's exactly the reason we did it. To irritate you,” he answered truthfully and I sighed.
“And the next thing is you're taking all of us out for dinner,” Austin announced.
“Am I now? When did I agree to that?” I cocked up an eyebrow.
“You don't need to. You're just taking us,” Sophia shrugged.
“Nothing more than McDonald's,” I raised my hands as I surrendered.
“Eh! That's basic,” Justin scrunched up his nose from where he was chilling since he came in.
“That's not something royal and shit,” Sophia whined, “I expect a classic Christian style grand dinner.”
I rolled my eyes and was about to say something but Blaire added, “Mcdonald's works fine for me, I guess.”
“Well, the game's over then. McDonald's will do,” Sophia said, defeatedly.
“Well, then let's get takeaways and eat and crash here,” Duncan yelled.
“The first option is alright but crashing here is a big NO,” I stated bluntly.
“Why? Is something gonna happen tonight?” Sophia eyes Blaire.
“I can't disagree, Soph. Maybe someone's getting some,” Isabella joined the teasing, speaking for the first time in a while.
Well, she's not much of a speaker.
“What? No! Guys! And oh my gosh, Isa, since when have you been like that, huh?” she said, wide-eyed.
“Since I got a boyfriend I guess,” she shrugged and cuddled with Austin.
“Well...,” Sophia drawled out.
“No, Soph. Nothing is happening. Boys have cooties, remember?” she exasperatedly threw her hands in the air.
I shot her a glance, raising an eyebrow while everyone laughed out.
Well, I am lucky to have friends like these, at least.
