001 | A Day Of Questions And Arguement's
Adelaide Shepherds had spent the night round her best friend, Beatrice's place after a long and intense phone call with her older sister Kathleen, she never really had a good bond with any of her siblings apart from Amelia, she always felt like most of them forgot about her, especially after their father died when she was 2 and a half years old. Everyone expected her to be fine but Adelaide wasn't, she never really knew her dad but she felt like that didn't matter to some of her siblings and her mother. Of course She loved her mom and her siblings but she still hated the fact she was practically invisible to them.
"You okay Kori?" Beatrice asked Adelaide as they both got into the car to head to the hospital. Adelaide was already dreading the day as she knew Derek would most likely question her about the call she had with Kathleen which she didn't want to think or talk about because it would only cause more argument's and she wasn't ready for that. She wasn't ready to talk about her son which somehow her mother and Kathleen had found out about and most likely the rest of the family have done by now.
"Dreading today. I really don't want any more arguments. I've already had missed calls from Amelia, Derek's texted me a million times, Lizzie and Nancy have both tried calling too. I just want to know how they found about Connor. I never even told the father" Adelaide sighed already feeling overwhelmed with all the questions. She never wanted anyone to find out about Connor, not that she was ashamed of him, she just knew her mother would be ashamed of her. It was one of the reasons she left as soon as she could, she was 16, she dropped out of school and moved out of state and re-enrolled else where, all so her family could never find out about her child.
"Keep your head up Kori' you did what was best for you and that little boy. You have nothing to be ashamed of or feel bad about." Beatrice smiled glancing over to her friend who nodded slowly. Of course Beatrice was right but she couldn't help but feel like everyone was ashamed of her for hiding the fact she hid the fact she had a baby.
"I did what I thought was best for him, I couldn't give him the life he deserved. I was only 16, me and his dad we were reckless at the time, underage drinking and going to party's. I didn't want to screw Connor's life up before he had the chance to live it so as soon as I gave birth, I named him and gave him up." Adelaide admitted to her friend, she hadn't really told anyone about how she behaved as a teen, parts of it she was ashamed of herself but never has she been ashamed of bringing her son into the world even if she wasn't the one raising him.
"You don't have to explain yourself to me Kori' I know you would have done what you thought was best" Beatrice smiled a soft smile as she waits for the traffic light to turn so she could continue to drive.
"He'd be turning 13 soon. He'd be a teenager. Sometimes I wonder what he would be like now, I wonder if he still has those beautiful blue eyes I loved so much" Adelaide admits.
"Then other times I try and think about what he would be like. I see him fighting the stereotypes and loving dance, he'd have won trophies and titles, he'd probably be the only boy on his dance company's competition team but he wouldn't care because he's doing something he loves. He would also be creative, art and writing would be his main hobbies along side dance and he would probably be good at them too" Adelaide continued as she told Beatrice what she thought Connor would be like, of course she couldn't be too sure what he is like but she'd like to imagine him, he would be happy that's all she did know.
"He sounds like he would be a talented young boy" Beatrice smiled as she listened to Adelaide talk about her son, she knew that Adelaide didn't talk about her son, she didn't even know she had a son until she got the call the previous night asking if she was free because she needed to talk.
"I think he would be, really, really talented" Adelaide nodded slowly. She liked the thought of talking about her son, about how she thought he would be.
"If you ever want to talk about him without fear of being judged then you know where I am." Beatrice reassured the brunette sat beside her in the car.
"Thanks Bea' means a lot" Adelaide gave her friend a small smile as she thanked her friend, she knew she would always have Beatrice to support her and she would never judge her too which helped their friendship, they never judge one another, they have banta and they love each other just like family would, to Adelaide, Beatrice was the sister she never had, the one who she was so similar to and knew would always have her back, kind of like her and Amelia having each others backs. Adelaide looked down at her phone and sighed, she'd just missed another call from Amelia, she was probably worried from the lack of contact from Adelaide all night. Adelaide reminded herself to call Amelia later in the day especially because she knew in just under ten minutes time she'd most definitely be bumping into Derek and he would be questioning her about the whole son situation, she wasn't prepared for today and if she could, she'd definitely have stayed home and ate her body weight in ice cream, her favourite way to avoid her feelings and arguments.
Adelaide and Beatrice walked into the hospital together and immediately joined Jo and Stephanie waiting for the elevator so they could go to the locker room and change into their scrubs.
"El we need to talk" the brunette woman heard her older brother calling to her. Adelaide rolled her eyes before putting on her fakest smiles
"I'll catch you three up" she said to the trio behind her and turned around
"If this is about the argument I had with Kathleen then I don't want to hear it." Adelaide put a stop to the conversation before it even got started but Derek wasn't having it.
"El, you had a baby and didn't tell anyone. That baby is almost a teenager now and showed up at moms looking for you with his parents. I think we all deserve some sort of explanation" Derek continued ignoring Adelaide's request not to go into it. All that was going through her mind was how did the they find out who where her mom lived and why.
"I'm not discussing this. It's nobodies business but mine so drop it" Adelaide folded her arms in annoyance.
"Adelaide we need to discuss this, you argued with Kathleen for hours about this. We all want to know why you kept this from us" Derek tried to talk to Adelaide but she simply ignored him and pressed the elevator button before changing her mind and taking the stairs. Adelaide made her way to the interns locker room and rolled her eyes as her brother had beaten her to the doors.
"Derek I'm not doing this. It's nobody's business. I don't know why mom and Kathleen were so wound up about it. I don't know why any of you are wound up about it in-fact. People give babies up all the time, it's not like I sold my baby on the black market or something." Adelaide tried to stay calm but being badgered by her brother was just frustrating her.
"El' we need to discuss this. Mom is worried about you, you gave your child up, you didn't tell anyone about it and then all of a sudden a thirteen year old shows up at her door. We need an explanation" Derek said, it was true their mother was worried and confused because she didn't know anything about a grandchild from Adelaide.
"Derek I don't have time for this. I'm on Dr Yangs service today and if I'm late for rounds I'll be on scut for a month" Adelaide rolled her eyes knowing she will already be on scut because talking to Derek had held her back then without another word Adelaide went and got changed. As soon as she was ready she shoved her phone on her locker not wanting it to keep going off in her pocket and practically ran to rounds. She was late so as expected the brunette had been put on scut, but anything was better than being badgered by her brother about the son she gave up.
It was lunch when Adelaide went and checked her phone, she decided it was time to call Amelia, especially after having another missed call with a voice message this time.
"Here we go" Adelaide sighed to herself sitting on a bench that was in the locker room, she dialled her sister's number. It only rings until Amelia answered the call.
"Hey Layne" Amelia answered immediately, Adelaide only let Amelia call her Layne since she hated it just like Amelia only letting Adelaide call her Lia because when Adelaide was little she couldn't pronounce Amelia and would almost always call her Lia.
"Hey Lia, what's with the million calls?" The youngest shepherd asked her older sister as she acted like she didn't know what was going on.
"I heard about the argument you had with Mom and Kathleen, and you won't talk to anyone about it. I wanted to check in on you" Amelia informed her younger sister who knew Amelia would be worried, they were the closest out of any of her other siblings but she still didn't want to talk about it all especially not over the phone.
"Can we not talk about that please. I really don't want to talk about it" Adelaide said with a sigh, she knew that there was going to be more questions but Adelaide was going to do everything in her power to avoid those questions.
"We can talk about whatever you want Layne. I'd never push you into talking about things you don't want to talk about." Amelia tried to reassure the youngest shepherd who knew Amelia had questions just like everyone else but Adelaide just wasn't going to talk about it.
"Good because I'm not talking about it. I just wish Derek would get that in his head. I wish everyone would get it into their heads" Adelaide sighed
"Derek never knows when to stop, he's rather protective of you the most." Amelia reminded Adelaide who rolled her eyes as she tried not to scoff, she knew her brother was protective of her, he always had been; well not technically always because half her life she felt invisible from all her siblings minus Amelia.
"I know. I just can't deal with all the questions. None of it is important. I mean everyone's acting like I sold the baby on the black market or something, like I've committed a major crime" Adelaide ranted, Amelia let her sister rant, she sensed that she needed the rant. The siblings spoke for a little longer before Adelaide decided to go and grab some lunch before she got back to work.
Adelaide left work just as tired as she started her shift, she even avoided going for a drink that evening with Bea, Jo and Stephanie. Jo and Stephanie both had questions about what went on that morning but like she told her brother and siblings she wasn't going to discuss it as it wasn't anyone's business but hers. Of course she told Bea, she needed someone to rant to after she got off the call to her older sister and her mother, if she didn't she would have probably drunk all the vodka that was in her cupboard which was two bottles from a girls night that hadn't been used. The youngest shepherd collapsed onto the sofa as soon as she got into her apartment, she was going to run herself a nice hot bath and have a glass of wine before she eats and then goes to bed, she definitely needed a early night.
"Bath, wine, food, bed" Adelaide mumbled to herself finally pushing herself up off the sofa, if anyone heard her talking to herself then they would most definitely think she was loosing her mind, which could be likely or it could be the lack of sleep, she couldn't be too sure so she headed into the bathroom and ran herself a bubble bath to wash away the days stress. She spent like forever in the bath before finally getting out the bath as she was wrinkling up like a prune. She made herself a grilled cheese sandwich and then went to bed and as soon as her head hit the pillow she was out like a light.
