Take Nine (Midnight)

LATER that evening, I couldn't manage to fall asleep, especially knowing that I was sleeping with a guy beside me. I have never slept with a guy before (except maybe for Jasper, in a platonic kind of way) so it was difficult for me to doze off just like that without feeling anxious. It's not like I don't trust Patrick, cause he was still by far the most gentleman out of all the guys here.

I decided to go out for a while. I sat on the bench which I sat on earlier. It wasn't completely dark outside due to the lighting equipments the crew set-up surrounding our camping area. I glanced around when suddenly, something caught my eye. Not too far away from where I was seated, I noticed someone walking inside the forest area with a flashlight in his hands. I shook my head, trying to compose myself. I'm not just seeing things, right?

Out of impulse and curiosity, I stood up and followed whoever that person who dared to enter the forest at this time of the night. I wasn't even holding any flashlight. I just followed the little light that I could see flickering a few meters infront of me. There was no definite path, only the tall trees and that person were guiding me now (I just hope it isn't a ghost or any supernatural being).

I glanced behind me and panicked because I didn't know where I actually entered. There was no backing out now. I walked faster, trying to catch up the person I was following. I stayed calm as possible. Chastity, this is what you get for giving in to your little friend namely 'Curiosity', I blamed my inner self.

I didn't know how many minutes have gone by already. If I was having a nightmare, please someone wake me up now. But I wasn't dreaming. Because the moment I stepped onto some kind of a twig causing a sound, the person infront of me suddenly stopped walking and looked behind. That's when he saw me and I saw HIM. I groaned inwardly. Why on earth did it have to be the devil? I mean, come on, of all people, why HIM?

"Who are you?" He asked, flashing the light on my face.

I walked closer to him while covering my eyes from the light. "It's me."

When he realized this, he dropped the light from my face. "Why are you following me?"

"I am not following you." I lied. Yeah I still have time to lie right now. I have my pride.

"Then, what are you doing here?" He asked in his usual cold tone.

"I... was gonna poo." Well okay that was embarrassing. Screw me.

"Then I should leave now." He said, turning his back at me.

"No wait!" I said too quickly, grabbing his arm. "I was kidding."

He raised his slanted brows at me. "I don't have time for your silliness."

"I followed you, okay?" I finally admitted. "Why are you here?"

"You don't have to know." He said, shoving my arm away. Then, he started walking again with his flashlight directed on the ground.

That's when I realized that maybe... "Are you looking for something?"

He didn't answer. As expected of the devil.

"I'll help you find it." I volunteered.

"I don't need your help." He said, ignoring me.

I walked beside him. "Come on just tell me what it is."

He stopped walking and faced me again. "You're not really going to stop following me?"

I shook my head.

"You're annoying." He muttered.

"Excuse me? I was offering you help and now I'm annoying?" I rolled my eyes at him even though he couldn't see it cause he turned his back again.

MINUTES passed and still he continued to search for that something that he wouldn't tell me, while I was behind following him cause I didn't know my way out of this forest anymore. Because if only I knew, I could've gone back to the camping area already. I should've just dropped something along the way to guide me just like what Hansel and Gretel did (but they failed at it, now I remember, so it was good I didn't do it).

Anyway, my eyes were already getting heavy. I wanted to lie down and sleep. Note to self: Don't let curiosity eat you. You'll regret it in the end. "Hey!" I called out to him weakly.

"What?" He asked without looking at me.

"Can we go back now? I'm really dead tired and sleepy." I told him, yawning.

"I didn't ask you to follow me."

"Can you just stop being a devil for a minute?"

"What did you just say?" He turned to me this time, pointing the direction of the flashlight on my face again.

"Yes you heard me right. You're a devil."

I could see him gritting his teeth in anger, but he looked away, ignoring me. He continued his search for that thing which I had no clue about. It must be really important to him considering the fact that he really snuck out in the middle of the night here in the forest just to find that crap. I scratched my head in annoyance and followed him silently behind.

"You know, if you'd just tell me what it is, then maybe I could've found it already." I muttered.

"It's a necklace." He said, almost whispering.

"Oh for heaven's sake! How are we supposed to find that tiny thing in here? Are you even sure you lost it here?" I complained.

"You're getting on my nerves, Virginity!"

I stopped walking at what he said. "Hey, what did you just call me? V... Vi... Vir... what???" I stutteringly answered him, poking his back. "Don't you dare mock me."

He looked back, facing me. "Was I mocking you? Is your name Virginity?"

"Don't play dumb with me. We're the only ones here, devil."

"Tss." He sighed. "Can't you just shut your big mouth for a minute?"

I rolled my eyes at him and crossed my arms over my chest. Fine, I'll give in to what you want this time devil. Just this time.

"Stay here. Don't follow me." He ordered, walking away.

"B-but..." I tried to protest but he already jogged away.

"I'll come back." I heard him say, as his light slowly disappeared in the darkness.

The only light that I could see now was the moon shining up above. I scanned around me. The sounds of the crickets and howling of owls (or hawks or whatever) were echoing in my ears, causing the hair on my spine to stand up. But I tried to shake those off away. He said he'll come back. He's not that devil to not keep his word, right? Right?

Due to exhaustion from walking, my feet were now aching so I slowly bent down to take a seat on the big rock which was on the ground. The cold breeze was adding up to the tension that I was feeling right now. I wasn't afraid of ghosts or anything. I was just really afraid of the dark. Chastity, deep breaths.

IT has been how many minutes since I was there left alone. I couldn't stand it any longer. I stood up from my seat and marched my way forward, trying to find him. As much as I hated to admit it, he was my only hope. "H-hey! Devil! Are you still there?" I called out to him, while gathering up all my courage to face nothing but darkness.

"Devil, where are you? You said you'll come back." My voice was fainting now. Probably because of fatigue and drowsiness. Both my eyes and feet were feeling heavy. LITERALLY. It was a miracle that I could still walk this far to find that guy.

As I took a step forward, there was a sudden rustling sound behind me. I looked back and saw no one but the trees. I gulped hard. "H-hey! I know you're there. This is not funny, devil jerk!" I said bravely, though deep inside I already wanted to run away in fright.

I took few steps backward while turning from side to side, anticipating for another rustling sound. "D-don't try to scare me, devil." I said again, still walking backwards slowly.

Just then, someone appeared right in front of me, chuckling. "You're too easy." The devil mumbled.

As soon as he said this, my foot slipped onto something on the ground, causing me to fall into a deep hole. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!" I managed to scream out of fear. The next thing I knew, I was dead.
