Take Nine (Dawn)
I was walking barefooted in the sand, as the waves of the ocean drenched both my feet. The sun was hitting my face, but I wasn't complaining. I could see mom from afar, preparing something on the table set up infront of our tent. "Chastity, honey, come back here!" I heard someone calling out to me.
I looked to my side and saw dad smiling at me. He was waving and motioning me to come closer to him. I ran to his side excitedly. I missed seeing him. I missed talking to him. I missed everything that we did back then. And now here he was, calling out to me.
"Dad!" I hugged him tight, closing my eyes.
"Dear, take care of your mom always, alright?" He reminded me.
I nodded.
"I love you so much. You and your mom."
"I love you dad." I finally said, hugging him tight.
And then... he disappeared. "Dad?" I scanned around me. He was nowhere to be seen. The ocean slowly faded and changed into complete darkness. "Dad? Dad?" I sobbed, closing my eyes.
"H-hey! Wake up! Wake up!" I could hear someone calling out to me. "Come on. Wake up!" I felt my body shaking. Someone was shaking me and waking me up.
I shook my head, still not opening my eyes. "No! I wasn't dreaming. I wasn't dreaming."
"You're dreaming." Someone answered beside me.
This time, I opened my eyes and saw the face of the devil looking at me... worriedly? His eyes weren't the usual cold and dark. His brows weren't creased in anger, but rather, in worry. "My dad..." I mumbled in a faint voice. A drop of tear fell from the corner of my eye.
The devil sat up straight with his back leaning on the trunk of a tree. He cleared his throat then looked at me. That's when I realized that I was leaning onto him. My head was resting on his shoulder and I was holding his left arm... No, I wasn't just holding it. I was hugging it tight in my arms. "S-sorry." I said, releasing his arm and sitting up straight as well.
I gulped hard. We were sitting side by side. Our arms were brushing against each other. I suddenly felt warm inside. I was sweating like a pig. "W-what happened?" I asked, diverting whatever I was feeling inside.
"You fell." He answered bluntly, pointing his finger up.
I looked up and saw that we were really in a deep hole. I tried to remember what happened earlier. As far as I could remember, I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO FELL. Did he fall as well? "I fell and... you... fell too?" I asked hesitantly.
He shook his head. "I jumped down here."
My eyes grew wide at what he said. "W-what?"
He sighed. "I... couldn't just leave you, could I?"
Yeah, he's got a point. But wait... he had the chance to leave me, yet he chose to jump down to... stay with me? It doesn't make sense at all. Is this the devil I am talking to right now?
"I've already found the necklace." He said, showing it to me. It has a letter "S" engraved on the pendant. But his name starts with "T" not "S". I suddenly got curious again.
"That's a relief. But may I ask... whose is that necklace? Why is it so important to you?" I couldn't help but ask.
He turned to me. "If I answer that, will you answer my question as well? An eye for an eye."
I nodded. "Deal."
"I gave this to someone who is important to me." He answered looking at the necklace in his hands.
"Who is that someone?" I asked again. His partner Skye? Or his ex-girlfriend?
He looked at me. "Just one question."
I sighed. "Fine. What's your question?"
"What did you dream about?" He asked seriously.
I creased my brows at him. "Why do you wanna know?"
He looked away. "You were calling out to your dad and... you were crying."
I bit my lip and closed my eyes. I don't usually share my story to anyone, but at that moment, I felt like I could trust him. "My dad died when I was just a kid. I didn't have any siblings. My mom never re-married. He loved my dad so much and so did I." A tear escaped from my eyes again. Argh! I didn't want to cry infront of this devil. Why did I have to be so weak?
"S-sorry... I shouldn't be crying. This is embarrassing. Argh!" I said, faking a smile.
But then, I suddenly felt his hand on my cheek, wiping my tears away. I looked at him. His eyes caught mine. For the first time in my life, I felt my own heart beating. Lub-dub... Lub-dub... Lub-dub... His hand was warm on my cheek. No one dared to move nor speak between us.
Just then, I felt something itchy in my nose. Oh no, my allergies... please, no... "AHHH-CHOOO!" I sneezed real hard.
He dropped his hand from my face quickly. His eyes closed and his whole face wrinkled in disgust. Great, I made him mad again.
"Sorry. Oh God. I'm really sorry." I said, wiping the mucus that probably speckled on his face.
He caught my hand and stopped me. "No need." Wait, he's not mad? "Let's go up now."
"But... how are we gonna go up?" I asked him.
He stood up and caught something on the side. It was a rope, which I had no idea where it came from. "I set this up before coming down here. I'm not that stupid to just go down here."
And the devil jerk is back... I sighed and nodded. "I see."
"Now go first." He ordered me, but then as I tried to get up, my ankle hurt so much that I shriek.
"Aaaahhh!" I fell on my butt again. "I think something was broken here on my ankle."
He moved towards me and examined my ankle. It was red and swollen and really painful. He pressed it lightly causing me to grimace and wince in pain again. Then, he brought out his handkerchief and wrapped it around my ankle. "Come on I'll help you stand."
Help? Okay that's it. This guy really was a bipolar. Or does he have multiple personality disorder? Gosh. It's creeping me out. But anyway, I tried to stand up while holding onto his hand and grabbing onto his shoulder.
He helped me walk towards the rope. "Grab this. I'll push you upward."
I was hesitant but I tried anyway. I ignored the pain in my ankle for a while and tried to climb up using the rope. He was pushing me up by grabbing my waist. Thankfully, the hole wasn't that deep so after how many minutes of trying, I finally landed the flat ground.
I waited for him to come up, while touching my ankle which still hurt like hell, by the way. When he was already up, he moved towards me. "Hold this flashlight."
I complied. And then, he suddenly lifted me up in his arms (bridal style). I was completely taken aback that I wasn't able to speak. "Uh... y-you don't really have to carry me."
"Just hold that flashlight to guide me along the way. No more questions."He said, as he walked leisurely in the forest, as if he'd memorized every corners of it.
The sky was already turning into dark blue signalling dawn. The sun will be up soon. I still couldn't believe I was able to stand his presence that whole night. I guess he wasn't really that bad after all.
