Take Eleven

I was stunned when the devil just walked away after that. The two kids infront of me fell silent while looking at me. I smiled at them. "He's just really weird sometimes." I told them.

"I think you better go after him." Ara said to me, smiling. "We'll stay here for a while until you come back."

"Will you two be okay here?" I asked them.

They both nodded.

"I'll be back in a minute." I said, following the path where I last saw the devil.

I ran through the hallways, but couldn't find him anywhere. I searched through the empty rooms in the building and still couldn't find a trace of him. I might as well just let him. Why do I even care if he acted like that?

I was about to go out of the empty room where I just entered, when suddenly, I heard someone calling my name. "Chastity." I turned to the corner of the room, and soon enough, I saw him sitting on the floor like a little kid who just got lost in the streets.

"H-Hey! What are you doing there?" I asked, moving closer to him.

"Why are you here?" He asked me back.

I sat next to him on the floor. "I... was worried... I mean... Ara told me to find you." I reasoned out.

He looked down the floor. "Ara?" He faked a smile.

"What's the matter with you? Why did you suddenly run away?" I asked him again.

"None of your business." He said, standing up. "We better go back."

I grabbed his hand, stopping him. He turned to me. "I wanna understand why you're acting like this. But if you won't tell me... or anyone... then I don't think we can help you."

"I don't need any help." He said, shoving my hand away.

I stood up from the floor. "Well I think you do."

"You don't know anything." He said, marching his way out of the room.

I sighed. Fine. Why did I even ask him anyway when I know that he won't even bother telling me? You're so stupid, Chastity. I cursed myself.

WHEN I reached back the playground, I didn't find the two kids and the devil. I wondered where they went. I walked back towards the hallway and got surprised when I saw cameramen hoarding infront of a room. I marched towards the room which I realized to be an infirmary or some sort. As I entered, I saw the devil standing on the corner with his palms on his face. What happened?

"Ms. Gomez, why did you leave Ara and Shawn in the playground? We specifically assigned you to them to look after them." A staff reprimanded me.

I wasn't able to speak. What happened to Ara and Shawn? "I... I'm... s-sorry..." I mumbled, closing my eyes.

The staff left me after that. A camera was filming me with tears on my eyes. I wanted to shove him away, but I wouldn't. I just turned my back and walked towards the bed where I saw Ara lay down. Shawn was on the side sitting on the chair. He looked at me. I wanted to ask him what happened, but I didn't know how.

The nurse moved towards me. "Were you the one in charge of Ara?" She asked me.

"Uh..." She wasn't assigned to us but I still had the responsibility to look after her because I left her with Shawn at the playground. I nodded.

"She had seizures when you left. When she fell on the ground, a rock hit the side of her head. Shawn couldn't get any help since he's mute. But it was good that someone found her lying on the ground. And fortunately, it's only a minor bruise." The nurse explained to me.

I sighed. So that's what happened... if only I knew she has seizures. But of course, I still couldn't have prevented it. Still, I could've kept her safe. I touched Ara's face and stroked her hair. "I'm sorry Ara."

WHEN we left the Special Kids Center, I still felt bad after all that happened. I couldn't believe I was so careless for leaving the kids. I was about to go inside our room, when someone caught my eye in the hallway. I saw Skye walking towards the stairs. I decided to go talk to her. "Hi!" I greeted her.

She looked at me in confusion. "Hi!" She finally greeted back.

"You're Skye, right?"

She nodded. "Why?"

"Can we... talk? I mean... I just wanna ask you a few questions."

She looked uncertain at first. Then, she nodded. "But not here." She told me, leading the way towards the corner of the hallway where a small lounge area was set up. It was my first time to actually hang-out there. We both sat next to each other. Then, she spoke, "What do you wanna ask?"

"It's about... Tristan." I said hesitantly.

"Oh. What about him?"

I swallowed hard before continuing to speak. "I just heard that you're the sister of her ex-girlfriend."

"Yeah. And so?" She asked back.

"I know I shouldn't be asking this, but I was just wondering, what's the name of your sister?"

"Her name's Ahra... with an H. Ahra Samantha. Why are you asking? Do you like Tristan?" She asked bluntly.

I was taken aback. Like? That devil? Psh. Never. EVER. "No." Ahra. So that's the name of his ex-girlfriend. Now I understand why he acted like that towards the little girl. "Uh... do you know why he knows how to do sign language?"

"Why do you wanna know?"

"It's just that... I saw him doing it towards the kid assigned to us in the center."

She heaved a deep sigh. "You're really that curious?"

I nodded.

"He was deaf."

My jaw dropped upon hearing it. He was deaf? Seriously? "W-what?"

"But he's okay now. I mean, that's what I know." She said.

"Skye, wanna hang out downstairs?" Someone suddenly called her.

"Oh, I should go now. Nice talking to you, Chastity." She said, standing up, leaving me astounded on my seat. I still couldn't believe what I just learned. Was he really deaf? What else is there to know about him? Was he also really a criminal?

I shook my head in distress. Stop thinking about him now, Chastity.

"Hey Chas!" Someone called out to me.

I saw Jasper going out of their room. He walked towards me. "Oh. Hey!" I answered back.

"What are you doing here alone?" He asked, taking a seat beside me.

"Nothing. Just... meditating."

"Since when did you meditate?"

I frowned at him.

"Anyway, what happened with the little girl? Why are they blaming you?"

I sighed. Not again. "Yeah. I should be blamed. I left her with Shawn who was deaf and mute and who couldn't even ask for help."

"Woah. Slow down. Wait... why did you leave them in the first place?"

"Aaaah! This is making me crazy." I messed my hair up.

He chuckled. "You're blaming yourself?"

I nodded.

"Don't. I know you didn't want that to happen."

"Of course you'd say that. You're Jasper."

He smiled. "Why? If I'm not Jasper, I wouldn't say that to you?"

I nodded. "You're just making me feel better."

He smiled and reached for my nose, pinching it hard. "Yeah. I want you to feel better. So stop blaming yourself now, okay?"

I wrinkled my nose at him, then flashed a weak smile. "Fine." After saying that, I caught someone looking at us. It was the devil standing infront of their door. I looked back at him, then he walked away proceeding downstairs. "I need to go down." I told Jasper.

"What?"

"Bye. And thanks." I waved at him, jogging towards the stairs to catch up with the devil.

I followed the devil's trail and soon after, I saw him sitting by the edge of the pool again with his feet dipped in the water. No one except him was there in the backyard. It was as if it was his temple already. Slowly, I walked towards him and sat beside him. "Hey!" I spoke.

"What do you want?" He asked without looking at me.

"Nothing. I just... want to be alone." I answered.

"If you want to be alone then don't come here."

I turned to him. "I'm sorry." I suddenly said, causing him to turn at me.

"What are you saying sorry for?"

"I just learned from Skye..." I paused, looking at him.

"What did she say? About Ahra? You don't have to pity me."

"What? I don't pity you. I mean... I just didn't know you were deaf before. Now I can understand why you're being like this... even just a bit."

He sighed, looking at me. "You think you know me already just because of what Skye told you?"

I shook my head. "I never said that. I just think that... you're not really the devil that everyone is talking about."

"You're just like everyone else. Don't act like we're friends. I don't like it."

I nodded.

Both of us fell silent again after that. I wondered what's going on in his mind. I still have a lot of questions to ask him, but I was hesitant. He might shove me away, or worst, he might push me off the pool again.

I heaved a deep sigh. "I hope Ara is fine now."

He snapped his head at me at an instant.

"Not your Ahra... I mean, the little girl." I explained. "I'm so stupid for leaving the kids just to find you."

"What?" He suddenly asked, looking at me intently.

I looked away to avoid his gaze, then let out a chuckle. "Hey, don't think that I was worried about you. I was just..." I paused. "Never mind."

"You don't have to worry about me. Worry about yourself." He said coldly.

I nodded. "You're right. Maybe I should." I paused, then let out a soft chuckle. "But you know what... I don't even know why I keep on thinking and worrying about you. Ugh! What am I saying?" I quickly stood up from my seat. I suddenly felt my cheeks burning after saying that. Chastity, why can't you let your mouth shut?

I was about to step forward, but then I felt a hand stopping me by the arm. I turned around and saw him staring at me. "Forget what I said okay? I'm going in." I tried to release myself from his grip, but he tightened it on my arm. "T-Tristan... let me go."

He stood up from his seat, without letting go of my arm. "I want us to start over." He finally spoke.

My eyes grew wide at what he said. "W-what?"

"Stop calling me devil from now on and I'll..." He paused, avoiding my eyes. "...I'll try to be nice to you."

"Why are you saying this to me now?"

I saw him swallowing hard, before speaking. "I suddenly want to you to like me, Chastity Gomez."
