Chapter 19:The Haunted Mansion
The crow arrived as you reached the outskirts of the village, its sharp cry signaling another urgent mission. It perched on a nearby branch, its eyes gleaming in the early morning light.
"Kamado siblings!" it cawed. "Head north to the Blackthorn Manor! Reports of people disappearing and strange lights have been confirmed. Investigate and eliminate the demon causing the disturbances!"
"Another disappearance," Tanjiro said grimly, adjusting Nezuko's box on his back. "It's happening everywhere."
You nodded, gripping your sword tightly. "Let's move quickly. We might still be able to save someone."
The journey to Blackthorn Manor was long and arduous. The landscape grew wilder as you traveled north, the dense forests giving way to rocky hills and overgrown paths. By the time you arrived, the sun was dipping below the horizon, casting the abandoned mansion in eerie shadows.
The building was massive and decrepit, its once-grand facade now covered in ivy and cracks. The windows were shattered, and the heavy wooden door hung ajar, creaking softly in the wind.
"This place feels wrong," you said, shivering despite yourself.
Tanjiro sniffed the air, his expression darkening. "There's definitely a demon here. And something else...a strange smell, like smoke and decay."
You entered the mansion cautiously, your footsteps echoing on the dusty wooden floors. The air was heavy with the scent of mildew and something far more sinister. Shadows danced on the walls, flickering as if alive.
Nezuko stirred in her box, and Tanjiro murmured a soft reassurance. "Stay ready, Nezuko. We might need your help."
As you moved deeper into the mansion, the unsettling atmosphere only grew worse. The temperature dropped sharply, your breath visible in the dim light.
Then, you heard it—a faint whispering, like voices carried on the wind.
"Do you hear that?" you whispered, gripping your sword.
Tanjiro nodded, his eyes narrowing. "It's coming from upstairs."
The staircase groaned under your weight as you ascended, each step adding to the growing tension. At the top of the stairs, you found a long, dimly lit hallway lined with doors. The whispering grew louder, more distinct.
"Help...me..."
The voice was weak, barely audible, but it sent a chill down your spine. You exchanged a glance with Tanjiro before pushing open the nearest door.
Inside, the room was empty save for a single chair in the center, its wood scorched and blackened. The air was thick with the smell of burning, and faint scorch marks trailed across the floor, leading to the far wall.
"What happened here?" you murmured.
Before you could investigate further, the whispering turned into a low, mocking laugh. The shadows in the room began to writhe, coalescing into a dark, humanoid form. The demon stepped forward, its eyes gleaming with malice.
"Welcome, little mice," it said, its voice dripping with amusement. "You've wandered right into my web."
"Not for long," Tanjiro said, drawing his sword. "We're here to stop you!"
The demon laughed again, its body flickering like a flame. "You can try, but I don't think you'll last long in my domain."
The battle began with ferocity, the demon's attacks as unpredictable as the shifting shadows. It moved through the darkness with unnatural speed, its claws striking out from impossible angles.
"Stay together!" Tanjiro shouted, deflecting a blow aimed at your side. "It's using the shadows to confuse us!"
You nodded, focusing on your breathing as you countered the demon's next attack.
"Water Breathing, Fifth Form: Blessed Rain After the Drought!" you cried, your blade slicing through the darkness.
The demon hissed, retreating into the shadows.
"It's trying to split us up," Tanjiro warned, his eyes scanning the room. "Don't let it!"
The fight carried on through the mansion, the demon using its Blood Demon Art to warp the space around you. Hallways stretched endlessly, doors appeared and disappeared, and the walls seemed to close in.
"Y/N, over here!" Tanjiro called, his voice guiding you through the chaos.
You reached his side just as the demon reappeared, its form flickering like a dying flame. Tanjiro's blade flashed, his attack precise and unrelenting.
"Water Breathing, Seventh Form: Piercing Raindrop!"
The demon howled in pain as Tanjiro's blade struck true, severing its arm.
As the demon weakened, its hold on the mansion began to falter. The shadows receded, the oppressive atmosphere lifting.
"No! This is my domain!" the demon screamed, its voice filled with desperation.
Tanjiro raised his blade for the final strike. "Not anymore."
With a powerful slash, he ended the demon's life. Its body disintegrated into ash, and the mansion fell silent.
In the aftermath, you searched the remaining rooms, finding several villagers who had been trapped by the demon's illusions. They were weak but alive, their gratitude overwhelming as you escorted them outside.
"Thank you," one of them said, tears streaming down her face. "You saved us."
Tanjiro smiled softly. "We're just glad we could help."
As you left the mansion behind, the first light of dawn breaking over the horizon, you felt a sense of accomplishment. Another demon defeated, another group of lives saved.
But the road ahead was long, and you knew this was only the beginning.
