VI: Misery
I woke up later than usual, which was honestly refreshing. It felt nice not to have to jump out of bed at the crack of dawn for once. Groaning, I rolled over and peeked at my clock.
9:50 AM.
"Not bad," I muttered. I had already told Aunt Yeoreum last night that I'd be taking the day off, so there was no need to worry about any early morning scolding.
Grabbing my laptop, I drafted a quick email to the hospital authorities, informing them of my absence. Can't risk getting into trouble for skipping work without notice. After clicking "Send," I stretched, letting out a satisfied sigh, and slid off the couch.
The warm water I splashed on my face in the bathroom did wonders, shaking off the remnants of sleep. I pulled on an oversized t-shirt and shorts, letting my hair fall loose over my shoulders. Casual but comfortable. My plan was to head to Uncle Jack's lab and check in on Yoongi before the party.
---
As I walked down the hallway, a familiar voice called out behind me.
"Raehee! Wait!"
I turned to see Uncle Jack jogging toward me, huffing and puffing like he'd just run a marathon.
"Uncle, take it easy!" I laughed, patting his back to help him catch his breath. "I'm not going anywhere!"
He waved me off, finally managing to stand upright. "Where are you off to?"
"Your lab," I replied innocently, pointing toward the direction I was headed.
Uncle shook his head firmly. "Not now, precious. You'll meet him at the party tonight, not before."
I pouted for a moment but shrugged. "Alright, fine. I'll wait. See you later!"
---
After breakfast, I headed to my room to prepare for the evening. Uncle Jack's party was a big deal, and I wanted to look perfect. Standing in front of my wardrobe, I began rummaging through my clothes, tossing them onto the floor one by one.
Finally, I found it: a halter-neck black top paired with skinny jeans. It was simple but elegant. To stay warm, I grabbed my white denim jacket-winter was fast approaching, after all. Adding the finishing touch, I clipped metallic cross-shaped pins into my hair.
Satisfied, I stood in front of the mirror, admiring my reflection. "Not bad," I mused, smirking to myself. At least my heels would make me tall enough to stand closer to Taehyung's shoulder height.
---
The party was already in full swing when I arrived. The soft glow of the moonlight made everything feel magical. Spotting Jungkook, Jimin, and Taehyung near the center of the room, I made my way over to them.
"Hey, guys! Thanks for coming!" I greeted, smiling widely.
"How could I refuse an angel?" Jungkook quipped, flashing his signature bunny grin.
I felt my cheeks heat up. "Aish, Jungkook. Don't make me blush!"
Jimin gave me a playful smirk. "Why not? You do look like a queen tonight."
My cheeks burned even more, and I instinctively reached for Taehyung's hand. His warmth grounded me, but then he leaned in close, his voice low and teasing.
"You look beautiful tonight," he whispered, his breath brushing against my ear. A shiver ran down my spine, and before I could react, he gently pulled me against his chest.
My heart raced, but I didn't have time to respond. Uncle Jack's voice suddenly boomed over the crowd.
"Alright, everyone! The moment we've all been waiting for. Please welcome Min Yoongi!"
The applause was thunderous as Yoongi stepped into view. I froze, my breath caught in my throat.
He was... stunning.
Standing tall beside Uncle Jack, Yoongi looked more like a man than a machine. His pale, lifelike skin seemed to glow under the lights. His brown hair gleamed, perfectly styled, and the royal blue suit he wore fit him as if it had been custom-made. He was the definition of perfection-almost too perfect.
I tugged on Taehyung's sleeve, whispering, "Is it just me, or does he look... unreal?"
Taehyung's jaw dropped as he stared at Yoongi. "Unreal is an understatement. Your uncle really outdid himself."
As Yoongi approached, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. This was it-the moment I'd been waiting for. Uncle had spent years working on him, and now, here he was, standing right in front of me.
Yoongi's gaze locked onto mine, and for a split second, I swore his eyes softened. There was something unsettling yet mesmerizing about the way he looked at me.
I stepped forward, extending my hand. "Hi, Yoongi. I'm Raehee."
His hand met mine, his grip firm but not overly so-at first. His touch was warm, almost human. But as the handshake lingered, his hold tightened.
"Yoongi," I said with a forced smile, my voice trembling. "It... it hurts."
The pressure on my hand increased. My smile faltered as pain shot up my arm. I tried to pull away, but his grip was unyielding.
"Yoongi," I whispered urgently, my voice barely audible. I didn't want to cause a scene, but the pain was becoming unbearable.
Taehyung noticed my discomfort and quickly stepped in. "Yoongi, let go!" he commanded, placing a hand on the android's shoulder.
At that moment, Yoongi's expression shifted. His eyes flickered-just for a moment-before he released me. I stumbled back, cradling my aching hand, trying to catch my breath.
Uncle Jack rushed over, his face pale with worry. "What happened?"
"I-I don't know," I stammered. "He just... wouldn't let go."
Yoongi stood there, unmoving, his gaze now fixed on the floor. For someone who wasn't supposed to have emotions, he looked... conflicted. Almost like he was struggling with something inside.
Uncle Jack placed a hand on Yoongi's arm. "Yoongi, are you alright?"
Yoongi's head tilted slightly, his expression blank. "I apologize," he said in a voice so calm it sent chills down my spine. "I did not intend to cause harm."
Uncle Jack nodded, trying to reassure everyone. "It's okay, Yoongi. We'll run some diagnostics later."
I took a deep breath, trying to shake off the unease that lingered. Taehyung placed a protective arm around my shoulder.
"You okay?" he asked softly.
I nodded, though my hand still throbbed. "Yeah, I'm fine."
But deep down, I wasn't so sure. Something about Yoongi felt... off. And as I glanced at him one last time, I couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of something far more complicated.
