I will get you!
"Man, what's up with that?"
I groaned inwardly. In truth, I knew what the subject of the question, but I wasn't in the mood. "What?" I asked lazily.
"The ancient phone." The blond answered, beckoning his eyes to my phone.
The piece of history I had been fiddling with a few minutes ago was last used when colour wasn't something necessary for me. Honestly, I didn't think having up-to-date gadget as something cool. But my mother pampered me with it, why would I refuse?
"It's temporary. Some chic bumped into me yesterday. It's a long story, " I sighed, putting back the phone into my jacket pocket before it drew in more conversation.
"So, did you go rough with Beth? I don't mean to pry--"
Before he managed to finish, I got up. "I'm not in the mood to talk about that, Jace."
The blond was my best friend. At least I liked to think of him that way. I was peacefully meddling my own business when coach decided I was backup for quarterback. At the time Jace was captain, so he got friendly with me. One thing led to another, we were the talk of school.
I never wanted any attention; on the contrary, I preferred to avoid it. I didn't like girls to bother me. No offence, I had nothing against the opposite gender. I just had to evade any heated scene like yesterday's situation.
What a bummer since I was beginning to like Beth. I thought she was different; the kind you could just talk with. It turned out, the type of language she used was more than words.
Jace chuckled, it always amused him whenever things went messy with my relationship. At least I didn't need to hide my weird phobia from him. He got the privilege knowing about it after he ordered buttercream chicken for room service on our last football tournament trip.
"I think she's hogging the limelight for now tho, " he continued.
"Whatever, " I countered. "Anyway my whole thesis is gone with the phone. I'll try to retrieve my cloud's password, and if I can't, I have to cancel the weekend and redo."
We had this back to back battle schedule on Call Of Duty every Sunday. And again, let me gave myself a side note not to let my phone remember all my email password in the future. Only such circumstances made regret the best teacher in life-- of course!
After throwing a wink towards a girl leaning on the corridor, Jace patted the back of my shoulder. "Just do like me next time, 123456 as password."
"Wow, that's genius, " I let out with sarcasm. When I looked sideways, Jace didn't even notice I was watching him changing the password of his Facebook in reverse after exposing the numbers to me. He had a satisfied grin plastered on his face proving good looks didn't necessarily pair people with the best of brains. Lucky for him, I was the kind of friend who wouldn't log into his socmed and messed with him.
Well, not yet. I would keep it for necessary blackmails occasion.
"Oh, you just notice? I didn't get the ladies with just charms man. This--" tapping his forehead with his index finger a couple of times "--is the key to their heart."
If he meant idiocy, it might work with some no doubt about it. But since he was nice to me, I tried not to offend him. Chuckling, I walked away, leaving him to speculate on my reaction.
After hopping into my Ford Mustang, I started the drive. Singing the course of steel heart's she's gone on the radio, my out of tune sound pollution stop abruptly when a particular dress caught my eyes through the rear mirror. It didn't take long for me to realise she was the girl who owed me a new phone. From afar, I saw her wearing different colour socks. How silly, I thought.
When the light turned green, I steered, following her on the street. Knowing it was the opposite way of the township, I got curious. She and I had unfinished business, so going after her wasn't any crime, right?
When I reached her, I pulled down my window. "Hey, you there."
She stopped, spun to me and raised a hand for a weak wave. Her face faltered after recognising me.
Oh yeah, I'm not letting you off easily. My poor phone need justice, missy!
With a finger, I beckoned her to come closer. Oddly she followed suit, small steps nearing my car. At probably a few inches from the door, she bent down. Her sweet aroma attacked me instantly. Yes, she smelt good, and I disliked it. I wanted her to smell bad so I could get all angry at her.
"Where are you going?"
How smooth, idiot! I inwardly slammed. Why was I asking the wrong question? I planned to intimidate her. But of course, a few whiffed of sweetness made even my words sound nice.
"I'm heading home, to change... Uh... My socks, " she answered.
Not sparing her feet a glance, I scoffed instead. Although I'd seen it a minute ago and the matter of her telling the truth was out of the question, I didn't want to be easy on her. I wanted to show her I was in charge of the situation.
"Whatever. When are you--"
As if she knew what I was about to say, she suddenly twisted, reaching into the side of her dress, pulling out an envelope.
"Here, it's only 200 for now. It's all I got. I'm really sorry for yesterday, " she said, handing over the envelope to me with a slight pout.
From the corner of my eyes, I admit, she was kinda cute. But my eyes still refused to give her the audience fully. While I took her offer, my eyes strayed to her face. I was still glowering up until her lips made a full smile. Like a snap, something amazing happened to me. Surely cupid hit me right where he was aiming because I suddenly saw sunshine on the girl's face. A pair of dimples graced her blushed cheeks. There were visible bruises on the side of her forehead; those presumably were from her attempt to save my phone yesterday. But still, even the marks didn't impair her beauty.
I was ogling her for sometime before I snapped back to reality. Ripping my eyes from her, I pulled on my gear. She took a step back with a confused look before I rushed to drive away.
What was that? I thought to myself. My heart was beating wildly while fighting the urge to look back through the rear mirror. But I did, I slowed down while peering at her walking on the street. Her silly different colour socks and her dimpled cheeks were still playing in my mind until I reached home.
"Oh hi honey, how's your day?" My mother greeted me when I entered the kitchen. A tray of cookies was on her hand.
"It was... Weird." I admitted, reaching for the cookies which I regretted instantly. It was hot and flying straight to the ceiling upon my shock.
Lying on my bed that night, the girl was all I could think of. Her sweet smell, her smile, and that cute dimples, oh how I wished to see it again. What could go wrong with having a girl invading your mind? Alas, there was too many in my case. Science declared teenagers pack a lot of hormones, and one of it for me was testosterone. My libido was in rage and there was nothing I could do!
"You probably think this is funny, don't you cupid?" I grumbled, pulling my pillow to bury my face in it.
