DANIEL'S POV
"Why did you dare her to partake in the competition?" I ask Boma who waves me off. "Why na?"
"I wanted to see if Sammy will do it. The girl no dey gree oo. She is determined to do it sef," he responds while laughing.
"The problem here is that she is doing it with Gabriel," I sigh and plop unto my seat. He draws a chair from its desk to my side and sits beside me.
"I've settled that. If they call you to participate, please do oo"
I nod.
"Because I just convince Gabriel to opt out and you will definitely be the best substitute"
"But everyone in school knows I don't like such competitions"
"Yeah. That's before I came to change their minds"
"Ah! What did you do?"
"I gave them a reason to pick you as our representative," he smirks. "Will you do it?"
"Yes na! A chance to be with Sam is highly welcomed oo"
There is a light knock on the door. "Please, where is Senior Daniel? A teacher is calling him"
I wave at him.
"Yes!" he rushes to me. "Mrs Lola is calling you she is in the staff room".
"Thank you," I reply.
"If she asks you, say yes you will do it," Boma exclaims and forces me up. "I want you to be Mr Prime High".
I agree and leave. I head to the staff room and the teacher signs me up for the contest.
Just when I'm leaving the room, Sam is stomping towards it.
"Hello, sweetheart" I call out. She strides to my front and grip my collar.
"Never ever call me sweetheart. Don't taste my patience. I'm dangerous," she growls.
"Calm down na. I don't bite," I chuckle.
"But I do. I just don't bite, I punch and injure my victims," she says and shrugs. "Better protect your pretty face".
"Try smiling often, angel. It will fit you," I smirk.
Her already scrunched up face goes darker with fury. She clenches her fists. The door to the staff room opens and Mrs Lola walks out.
"Good Afternoon ma," Sam says, ignoring me.
"Good Afternoon. Do you want to see me? I have a class right now"
"Yes ma. I want to see you. It is regarding the Mr and Miss Prime High contest. I don't want to participate anymore. I'm not interested"
Mrs Lola's lashes goes up and down and she takes in her sight. "And why is that?"
"I don't believe in displeasing myself ma. I don't want to do it as long as Daniel is involved. Thank you ma. I'm sure there are other girls interested in it," she spins on her heels, bumps me intentionally and storms off.
See how plan just scatter.
"I'm not doing the competition again ma," I say and shrug nonchalantly. "As the Head boy, I'll be too busy during the event. Let me give other boys chance to participate. Bye ma".
"What's all these rubbish?" she yells. "I'll pick the people to represent myself".
I follow her as she marches to the class. She picks a boy, Deji in Art class and proceeds to pick Anna in Science class.
Everyone in our science class is disagreeing with Mrs Lola as she writes Anna's name down on a paper.
"Anna, for that day, get casual, traditional and dinner outfits okay? Also, read oo! Current affairs and others because this contest is not just about your appearance but your intellect too," Mrs Lola announces.
"Mrs Lola, pick me please. I want to do it," a girl begs.
"Why did you even pick Anna?"
"She won't represent us well"
"She isn't even fine sef"
"Let other girls partake na"
Anna stands up from her seat and goes to Mrs Lola. "Ma, I don't want to do this competition".
"Why?" she yells out. "I have already written your name oo".
"Ma, write the name of someone that is interested. Don't force them," a boy butts in.
"Because they don't want me to contest. They don't want me to represent the class so I think it's best I don't go"
"Yes," Boma's voice explodes beside me and I flinch. I didn't even know he was near me. "We don't want Reverend Sister to represent us. Sister Anna, isn't this competition unholy for you?"
Everyone burst into laughter and begin to throw degrading insults at her and her religious ways.
"This is the Last time I will ask," Mrs Lola scowls. "Who is representing SS3 for Miss Prime High".
"ANNA!" Sam roars as she walk into the class.
"Fuck you, Sam. Your stupid friend isn't representing us," Boma snaps and I glance at him. Why is he so worked up?
"You are mad," Sam snarls.
"Who do you want to represent you?" Mrs Lola sighs, her shoulders drooping weakly as she scans the class.
"I will," Dami, one of Nora's entourage, volunteers.
"Alright then. It is settled," Mrs Lola says firmly and departs.
"Dude," I punch Boma's arm. "What did Anna do to you?"
"Guy," he raises his palm in the air. "I don't want to talk about that fake girl".
I nod and turn to my desk only to see Anna beside it. "Sorry, I want to talk to your friend," she says lightly.
"Boma?" I ask dumbfounded.
"He is your friend, isn't he?" she quizzes with a calm demeanor.
I'm just worried on her behalf. Boma will shout eh...Fear go catch her.
Boma is two steps away from me so he obviously knows she is here but he trains his eyes on a group of boys. I tap his shoulder and he drags his gaze to us.
"Boma," Anna's voice echoes with a sour tone. "You can make noise as much as you want. I will never change myself. Pressurize me all you want. See me however you want. I don't care. I love my Heavenly Father and I will always live to glorify Him. I will live according to His Will and commands".
Boma yawns and places his hand over his mouth. He stretches and speaks wearily, "Are you done with your boring speech? I'll take my leave now. Mtchew!"
"You are so rude and spoilt," she spits out.
"Go to hell, bitch! I don't give a fuck what you call me. You are such a hypocrite. Be pretending to yourself and not me," he barks and Anna shudders in fear. He push me aside as he storms out of the class.
"I have always refused to hate anyone but this time, I don't care. I hate Boma. I hate him," she mumbles and heads to her seat.
I shake my head. This isn't good. They need to reconcile. They shouldn't harbor such vile feeling against each other.
Subconsciously, my eyes follow Sam as she leaves the class and soon, I'm jogging after her.
"Sammy, wait! Can I talk to you for a second?"
She pauses and peers at me over her shoulder.
"Please"
She groans and turns to face me. "What is it?"
"Can we be friends?"
"No! Never"
"Is it because I said I like you?"
"I don't even care about that. That one concerns you"
"I still like you though. I still have a huge crush on you but I'm hoping we can be friends. Can we start as friends please? Let's get to know each other small small," I stretch my hand to her hoping for a handshake. She eyes me and hisses, folding her arms over her chest.
"We can't be friends?" I ask her.
"I don't want to be your friend"
"Why? Why can't we be friends? What did I do to make you dislike me?"
"You are egoistic"
I raise a brow at her. "Really?"
"Yes"
"That's the problem, Sam. You have assumed a lot about me but you truly don't know me. Try to know me first before you begin to judge"
"I'm not interested in knowing you oo," she hisses.
"So you dislike me?"
"I don't care about you so I don't have that energy to waste to be liking or disliking you," she shrugs and rolls her eyes.
"Why don't you want to be my friend? But you are friends with other guys na? What's different about me?"
Her lips curves as she tries to stifle her laughter. "Other guys aren't nerds and they don't spend ninety percent of their time reading and talking about science".
My brows slanted in disapproval. It's disappointing the way some people think. "You call me a Nerd? What's so wrong about reading and talking about science? I love it. It is an interesting topic, you know. I've been working on some robotics too".
"Yeah! I know. The school is always boasting of your inventions and trophies from science competition. You don't need to remind me"
"Is that why you don't want us to be friends?"
"What's the point of us being friends? I don't speak science. I speak football. We don't have anything in common"
"We are both science students," I smirk.
She rolls her eyes. "Wipe that smirk away. Before calling me a science student, call me a footballer. That's what and who I am". She eyes me and departs.
Since when must you have something in common with someone before you can be friends? She hasn't even tried to know me and she has already concluded that we can't be friends. This isn't fair.
"Samantha Ademola!" I call out. "I have a dare for you and you are gonna love it".
"Alright! What's in it for me?"
I flash a smile at her.
