Yes or No
'Will I have a new boyfriend by graduation?' 'No.'
'Will, I graduate?' 'No.'
Lindsay raised her eyebrows. That had to be impossible. She always had great grades. She shrugged it off as a fluke and kept typing. After all, she'd been at it all night, sitting up in her room with only the light of the moon and the glare of the computer screen. It had already predicted her favorite show's season finale and the end of her book.
'Will Robbie come back to me?' 'Yes.'
Lindsay smiled. She had always, always loved Robbie. He was a foreign exchange student at her school from Ireland, who looked like Niall Horan. They had dated in the fall, but broke up after winter break. Lindsay wanted him back so much. And now he would be back. The website knew. The website was right again, like it had been in the past. The machine knew everything.
'Is Robbie thinking of me now?' 'Yes.'
Lindsay could barely contain a squeal. She decided to ask more questions about her graduation before coming back to the topic of Robbie, though.
'Will my grades slip?' 'No.'
Lindsay furrowed her brow. If her grades wouldn't slip, how could she not graduate?she typed more frantically, curious.
'Do I get suspended?' 'No.'
Weird. She heard a car pull up to her house. Lindsay decided to forget about it and keep typing.
'Do I get expelled?' 'No.'
She decided to repeat her question.
'So will I graduate with the rest of my class this year?' 'No.'
Lindsay frowned. She had to graduate. She'd already been accepted to Trinity in Dublin. She figured she and Robbie would reunite there.
'Will Robbie and I be at Trinity together?' 'No.'
But the site had promised she and Robbie would get back together.
'Will Robbie and I reunite soon?' 'Yes.'
Maybe she was missing a credit. That had to be it. So she would go to summer school and then graduate and go to Trinity. Of course!
'Will I go to summer school?' 'No.'
What was the site getting at? Would she be stuck in Montclair forever? She could handle it. New Jersey was a great place, and she could transfer to Princeton or something. Just then, she heard the front door close shut. Odd. Everyone was home. It must have been a different house.
'Will I stay in Montclair?' 'Yes.'
Lindsay supposed it made sense, but what about Robbie? He'd go home after graduation. How would they be together? She heard heavy, familiar footsteps on the stairs. Lindsay pushed back her hair and leaned back into her pillows.
'Is that my dad?' 'No.'
Who could it be? The house key was always under the mat. Maybe it was a friend? Lindsay slouched her head down to look at the keyboard.
'Is Michelle in my house?' 'No.'
Maybe it was something better. Maybe it was Robbie! He knew where the key was. This was how he was coming back.
'Is it Robbie?' 'Yes.'
'Will I see his smile again?' 'Yes.'
Lindsay sighed at the thought of his smile.
'Will he laugh that gorgeous laugh of his?' 'Yes.'
'Will he call me princess again?' 'Yes.'
Lindsay went to her vanity mirror and brushed her long red hair in anticipation. Her and Robbie again. It was a dream come true. Graduation didn't even matter. His hand rapped on her bedroom door and echoed through the silent house. Lindsay got up and raced to open it. And sure enough, there stood Robbie, with his hands behind his back. He smiled again, the same smile as always. But it was...different. Disturbingly different.
"Lindsay," he said, sounding off.
"Robbie," she sighed back.
She backed away slowly as he walked into her room, hands still behind his back.
"Are you ready to start over," she asked.
He chuckled coldly, in a laugh that sounded like the one she was used to, but different. Unusual. "You could say that," he replied.
She went to look behind his back, but he moved and dodged her glance. "Did you get me roses," Lindsay asked.
Robbie shook his head.
"Chocolate?" He shook his head again.
"Jewelry?"
Robbie stepped closer to her. "You got my place, love. At Trinity. Did you know? I'm on the waiting list."
Lindsay sighed. "That's too bad, Robbie. U of Dublin's a great school though."
Robbie sighed. "It's not my first choice, Lindsay. I always get my first choice."
Slowly, he raised his hands from behind his back to reveal a sharpened machete. "I'm lucky, though. A space just opened up."
Before Lindsay could scream, he shoved a rag into her mouth. "Night night, princess," he said saccharinely, before he slashed into her. When he was done, he turned to Lindsay's desktop. The site was open. Perfect. Robbie hunched over her laptop and typed slowly, not wanting to miss a single letter.
'Is Lindsay dead?' 'Yes.'
He chuckled. Wonderful.
