Chapter 3

They went bowling. The brunch was pretty much silent except for Pogo cracking some jokes, Dean laughing a little extra and Darla trying her best to avoid Beck's eyes. Damn those eyes.

Purple, green and red lights surrounded the area. She was very young when she went bowling for the first time with her dad and Dean. Pogo goes first, gets eight of them. Then Dean, gets all 10 of them. Then Darla, to everyone's surprise she gets all 10 of them as well!

"You know what we should do? Play this as teams. You two one team and us in one team." Teams were made, Darla and Beck, Dean and Pogo. One after another, both the teams scored. After almost 6 rounds of both the teams scoring neck to neck it was Darla and Beck were at 60 points and the other team was at 68 points.

Both the teams decided to take some time before playing the last round. They even did a little huddle. "I should do the last round." Beck almost whispered near Darla.

"What? No way, you're too impulsive. You'll mess it up."

"Sure, says the one who missed it once. If it wasn't for me we'd be loosing by a much greater margin."

"Yeah, whatever. I'm doing the last round." Darla almost slipped while snatching the ball away from Beck and walked to her position. "You two done talking?" Dean and Pogo weren't really talking about the game. They were discussing about what food they should have after this.

It wasn't new to Dean that Darla was letting her competitive side take over. Even the smallest thing gets her in a competitive spirit. She gets it from their mom. Dean doesn't like it when she acts like this. But since all this was Pogo's idea he didn't want to ruin the moment.

Darla get's ready to slide the ball. The three fingers clutching onto the ball. Her hand draws a perfect 180 degree. As if she was drawing it with a protractor. Deep whispers travel to her ears from the left. "Don't miss it." She gulps the knot in her throat, even her heart stops before the throw to let her concentrate on it. She slides the ball. The ball's off of her hand. It's rolling exactly from the middle. Knocks off one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine....  pins.

"GOD DAMN IT!"

Darla's voice even though was pretty loud didn't make much of an impact on the room because of Pogo "Oh MY GOD!! Darlaa!!!! You nailed it!!" She went running and hugged her. Darla was struck with a truck full of joyful laughter. Pogo almost managed to knock her down but Beck held her back and caught them from falling.

Darla calmed herself down and hugged Pogo. Immediately after exchanging the hug Pogo dragged her towards the food court. The boys followed. "Damn that was intense." Darla gave Beck an agonizing and furious look and he knew that he had trouble coming his way.

She might not remember but Beck was there when she lost a Tug- of- war game. She was probably 5 or six. She made a girl cry in her team for not trying good enough. Then she came back home and cried a lot more than the little girl. She even got fever that evening because of so much crying and screaming.

They took a seat and ordered some milkshakes. It was almost 5. "Two chocolate KitKat milkshakes and one coffee and coco shake with Choco chip toppings." She lets the guy know who was taking their orders. "You sure you don't wanna have anything?" Pogo asks Dean one last time and he nods.

"I'm full from the brunch." The guy leaves with their orders.

"You know we should come here more often." Pogo says while tapping on her phone. "And now that you're here, I wouldn't have to convince these idiots."

"Oh now we're idiots?" Beck makes a silly frown and smacks Pogo's head.

"Ugh! You idiot!" Beck chuckles covering his eyes. Man, does he love irritating Pogo. And her little annoyed noises cracks him up. "Darla! Exchange seats with me please."

"uh- No thanks."

"See even Darla hates sitting next to you. She hasn't even been here a week. You annoying piece of crap."

Even within all this teasing and laughing. Darla couldn't let go of the game points. If you think about it, it sounds crazy. And she knows that. Being this bothered over a silly game. That no one's gonna remember. Darla looks at Dean and she knows why he didn't order something. But it's not like she can help it.

Dean's thorough sight on the counter clearly indicated at his impatience. He wasn't in a mood to stay here anymore. "Darla," Pogo's voice has never sounded this soft. "are you- Okay? you seem awfully silent."

A very awkward smile and some mumbles almost saved her. "Yeah, I'm ok- I'm fine, I'm fine."

"You sure? Are you not enjoying? You know we can do something else, if you want. Since you barely know anything about Hartford and I wanted you to have a good weekend before school starts, I thought games and stuff would be.... fun."

"Pogo...." Darla leans forward and holds Pogo's hand "I'm just hungry, I need to charge my social battery that's all." Darla forced a smile that Pogo didn't entirely believe. "In fact you know what, I'll go see if our order's ready." She shot up from her place in a hurry to leave. Because if she stays there any longer she's gonna ruin this whole hangout.

Darla reaches the counter and asks the girl working there if there order is ready. She tells her that it's a busy weekend and it'll take a few more minutes to get there order ready. Darla let's go of a long huff and decides that she's gonna stay at the counter until there order is ready.

The waitress wasn't wrong. It was a super busy night. She was slapping hot dogs left and right on the counter. Getting ice for milkshakes. Serving drinks and coffees. "I know it's probably not the best time to ask this, but, isn't there usually two people handling this counter. I mean, at least on a weekend." Behind her ears. "You really love this place huh?"

"Done disturbing Pogo?" She didn't look at Beck.

"Uh.... Yeah. For now. As soon as she starts cussing me in Spanish, I know I need to stop." The counter girl even with all her messy hot dog orders, stole a few glances at Beck. Darla noticed that. Her eyes went back and forth between Beck and the counter girl. 'Jess' She noticed the name pin on her chest.

Darla turned her chest towards the counter because she'd rather face the popcorns than the guy responsible for ruining her evening. "Why are you here Beck?"

"To see you." His cheeky smile and woody brown eyes has never looked brighter. His eyes are so nonchalant. Even though Darla's stomach produced something gooey she ate it up real quick and just let out a sigh. "You still mad at me?"

"why would I be mad at you?"

"Because, I distracted you while bowling and-"

"Oh, so you do know that you distracted me. Good!"

"You know we won right? And it was a casual game. No one's gonna-"

"Remember it. I know. And I know that we won. But you took away my chance to get all 10 pins. When I could've easily done that. And I don't know why but it matters to me. To win, every time I take part in something."

"Here you go!" Jess, the waitress, carefully places their milkshakes on the counter, before Beck. She brings up a cute smile while handing the tray over to Beck. They head to over to their table. Beck sets the Tray on the table and Darla notices that seats has been changed.

"So sorry Darla, I had to get away from this estupido." Darla offers her a smile and tells her that it's okay. They drink the shakes and discuss about school. The clubs in their school. What places that could visit in the weekends. The boys that are good looking.

Confronting Beck about the bowling incident gave her some kind of relief. It made her feel good hearing from him that it was his fault that she didn't get all 10 of them. And that it was actually just a fun game. No one's gonna remember it. Hearing it from someone else gave her the comfort that she was just overthinking it.

They finished their drinks and and headed towards their cars. Beck took a cab and left alone. Dean dropped Pogo at her place then went home. As soon as Dean and Darla stepped inside the house, she smelled a storm coming her way. Dean slammed the keys on the glass counter beneath the television and it made a shattering sound. They glass didn't break but it may have gotten a crack.

Darla walked straight upstairs and closed the door of her room. She knew that she may have over reacted, but she couldn't help it. She never can. And Dean knows that. He's grown enough to be able to handle these things. Darla got changed into her night clothes and headed downstairs for water.

Dean surfing through the fridge, the kitchen cupboards. She knew that he was hungry. And that it was her fault that Dean didn't order anything at the food court. So she tried to rectify the situation by politely telling him "I can make you something, for dinner."

"No, thank you. You've done enough." There it is. Darla took in a deep breath and stepped forward to take out a pan from the bottom drawer. She went ahead to make him dinner anyways. Darla got some veggies from the fridge and started to pour oil in the pan. "I don't need anything. I'm not hungry"

"That's what you said at the food court. Now you're searching for food. Let me just make you something." She pressed a few buttons on the induction, to get it started. But Dean was determined. He went ahead and switched off the induction. "What the hell?! You're over reacting now."

"Oh! So you do know what over reacting is. Good. Does it feel nice? When someone UNNECESSARILY over reacts?"

"Oh, for god's sake Dean. You didn't have to do all this just to teach me a lesson. You could've just told me that you're pissed. And actually you don't need to tell me, I knew that you were pissed." Darla slammed the ladle against the counter and stormed off.

"Yes! Good thinking. Storm off. Like all this is my fault."

"No. No no no it isn't. And you made that very clear. In front of every one. Now Pogo's gonna think that we are some problematic sibling duo."

"Really?! Creating a scene in front of every one, shouldn't bother you. I thought you are perfectly fine with that. In fact Paige isn't gonna think about me. If anything, she'll know you for who you really are. An insecure and arrogant kid. Maybe you coming here was a bad idea."

She didn't say anything after that. There was nothing that could rectify this, moment.

Nothing.
